Despite Luenell listing off some formidable foes for including Natalie Cole and Anita Baker. Speaking of Anita Baker, whom Chaka rolled her eyes about regarding a Verzuz battle, is embroiled in controversy at the moment in relation to her tour with Babyface. Things got tense over Anita being upset with Babyface about overstaying his stage time and the backlash from his fans online which has led to his dismissal from the tour.

Between 1974-85 Chaka was putting out one or two projects each year, and was cranking out RnB and some crossover hits constantly . In that span of ten years she released over 15 albums all gold or platinum. Which is probably why Anita sang a Chaka song when she auditioned for her record deal. Chaka never enjoyed the mega album sellers like Anita or Whitney, but her string of hits during an era when music was constantly changing is very impressive.

As I recall, when Anita announced her retirement, Chaka called her and encouraged her to not remove herself from an industry that needs her voice. Anita has always given shout outs from the stage acknowledging female singers who inspired her with Chaka Khan being one of them. Chaka “rolling her eyes in this old interview” wasn’t so much shade as she already stated there is no competition and she ain’t “battling nobody”. We already know she shared the Verzuz stage in love with Stephanie Mills. She respects others but she knows most would consider themselves to have enough success that they have their own lanes and followings. Chaka and Anita amongst others headlined at Jazz in the Gardens before the pandemic, but Chaka was not well during her performance.
