A naive bullock-cart driver falls for a traveling courtesan.
Storyline:-
After nearly getting arrested, Hiraman[Raj Kapoor] promises to himself that he will never assist any black-marketeer nor transport bamboo. This incident does cost him his bullock-cart but he did manage to get his two oxen away in time. He manages to save enough money to buy another cart, and is hired to take a female on a 30-hour ride to a Mela. He subsequently finds that his passenger is an attractive woman, Hira Bai [Waheeda Rehman], and he falls in love with her - little knowing that she is a traveling courtesan - and it is this attraction that will get him into a physical altercation as well as in the bad books of Thakur Vikram Singh. Production:-
Phanishwarnath Renu who wrote the original short story, Mare Gaye Gulfam, in 1954, also wrote the script. The screenplay was written by Nabendu Ghosh, whose works include Devdas (1955), Sujata (1959) and Bandini (1963). Basu Bhattacharya directed the film with a sense of realism and a natural style. He felt it was important for the film that Raj Kapoor should avoid his usual "simple man" mannerisms.
The film took many years to complete. Most of the film was made at Aurahi Hingna, a village in Araria district and Bina, a town near Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. A few scenes were filmed at Powai Lake and at the Mohan Studios in Mumbai. Subrata Mitra, the cinematographer on Satyajit Ray's early films, had moved to Mumbai for a brief period to make Merchant Ivory films. The theatre actor, A. K. Hangal, knew Shailender from IPTA theatre group days, and agreed to play the small role of Hiraman's elder brother. However eventually much of his role was deleted in the final editing to reduce the length of the film
The film was received well and took the National Film Award for Best Feature Film, however, commercially, it was a failure. Bhattacharya turned to middle cinema (a meeting of mainstream Bollywood and art house cinema). In time, the film came to be regarded as a classic.
Both leads received acclaim for their acting, while critics felt Raj Kapoor delivered one of the most sensitive performances of his career, after Jagte Raho (1956).

No Body could have sung this song so beautifully than Manna Dey. In this song everything is so perfect that you enjoy every bit of the song. Just two frames covered, for the entire period. The camera covered the chorus singing group and occasionally, Wahida Rehman ji. Raj Kapoor joining the group with a dafli is so natural. It really reminds us our rural setting, where a group would assemble just with a few basic musical instruments and sing.

In retrospect of my resident at Golden village times, I still remember before 3-4 days of Holi while I was 7-8 yrs old, my father along with entire uncles of my family and whole community of village used to sing and practice similar like this song having same rhythmicity and musical instruments... missing those days, really authentic and great!

ये तीसरी कसम फिल्म का सबसे ज्यादा लोकप्रिय गीत है। इस फिल्म के सभी गीत श्रेष्ठ है क्योंकि इसके गीत शैलेंद्र ने लिखे हैं। यह फिल्म भी शैलेंद्र जी ने ही बनाई थी। बाद में फिल्म बहुत चली पर इसके बनाने में शैलेंद्र टूट गए थे। काफ़ी रुपया खर्च हो गया था, मुझे जहां तक जानकारी है कि राजकपूर जी ने मना भी किया था, पर शैलेंद्र को धुन थी कि वे साहित्यकार फणीश्वरनाथ रेणु की कहानी मारे गए गुलफाम उर्फ़ तीसरी कसम पर फिल्म बनाएंगे। आंचलिक जीवन की यह पहली यथार्थ फिल्म है जिसकी कथावस्तु बिहार के लोकजीवन से गढ़ी गई है। इस फिल्म के लिए राजकपूर जी ने शैलेंद्र जी से केवल 1रुपया फीस ली थी। मैंने 1966 में यह फिल्म देखी थी, फिर तो गिनती नहीं कि कितनी बार देखी। आजतक इसकी सबसे अच्छी समीक्षा, लेख मेरा मानना है कि प्रहलाद अग्रवाल ने और फिर मैंने वसुधा पत्रिका 2007 के फिल्म विशेषांक में प्रकाशित हुई है। मेरा यह मानना है कि तीसरी कसम एक श्रेष्ठ फिल्म है।
