I struggle with PTSD in large part from my experiences in the medical system. I agree with how hard this hits. Walking around in a floating chalk outline, going through the motions, staying in the box, while feeling dead inside. I think that is a universal human experience. Negative inner self talk that was fed data from every experience that ever hurt you or gave you the message that you were not enough,… we all feel isolated with this in one way or another and Ren shows us through his art, born of his pain, what a universal experience this is.

“Such a perfect day, take it just in case.” My daughter lost the battle with Mental illness and Addiction in 2021. She would manage to ruin good events with us by doing this very thing. Times when I had such hope for some “normalcy “ that I could provide for her, her daughter, and us. This song brought me to a breakthrough in healing and understanding of her point of view. Every freaking word. Also working on my own “reaction lyrics” because my perspective as a Mom can be described with this, as well. Ren is somewhat my “savior” at the moment. Much love, One love.

The scared of being okay line is interesting, and something I find very relatable. I struggle with anxiety, and you kind of get used to always being a little on edge. It becomes your normal. You get used to that heightened awareness, the edginess, it's almost comforting. I have had days where I have woken up and just felt really off. My heart rate has been lower than usual, and I had this really weird feeling, and that feeling almost becomes disconcerting and worrying. And then you realise, that feeling is calm. You just aren't anxious. And however silly it sounds, that, what is essentially "feeling ok" because it's not the norm, is very scary.

This was another great reaction. This song moves me to tears whenever I watch this video or hear this song because it describes my daily struggle over the past 25+ years. Ren has been able to express through his songs what I have been unsuccessfully trying to communicate to others regarding my mental, emotional, and physical struggles. I would also recommend you also check out Ren's other collaboration with Chinchilla, "How to Be Me," as well as their busking sessions in Brighton. As for "Chalk Outlines," it is one of my favorite songs right now; it is beautiful yet sad. Given Ren's medical history, I interpret this song to address mental illness diagnoses, and prescription psychotropics, which leave you emotionally dead (hence, the chalk outlines around your dead self). I can attest to the reality of this; for over 15 years, I was prescribed a cocktail of max doses of psychotropics until I decided to carefully wean myself off all medications in 2014. The side effects of the drugs were too many and too severe, left me an emotional zombie, and the benefits were negligible. I still struggle with my mental health, as well as physical symptoms, daily, but I rather feel pain than nothing at all.

I'm so glad you're listening to him and Chinchilla. He doesn't have a bad song in his catalog.

"Act as if you're happy" is actually pretty good advice. I'm not a psychologist, I just have an interest in the topic, but it has been scientifically proven that even forcing yourself to smile changes the chemical state of your brain and can change your mood quite successfully. When combined with other behavioral changes, such as cutting out social media and the news, changing your diet, or avoiding negative influences and people in your life, it can really help to counteract the dark spiral many people get themselves into and eventually become a "habit" that continually works to protect you from returning to that state. I love this song so much, it really shows off his vocal skills. And Chinchilla is great, too. I would recommend checking out How To Be Me next, it's just as moving as this one.
@Apollo.Rising Жыл бұрын
I go back and forth on the "Act as if you're happy" bit. On the one hand yes, exactly what you said, the physical actions of your body can influence your mental state towards happiness. On the other hand, suppressing what's making you sad and covering it up with a smile isn't healthy either, what's pushed down just festers until you deal with it. I think its a balance, of acknowledging your pain and accepting its okay to feel that way, and then also using the tools at your disposal (including things like making yourself smile for the chemical boost) to move through it into the light.

Even on MY first listens to most of Ren's music, I have to pause to process. I cry almost every time I hear one of his emotional songs as well, he really is genius at helping a listener feel his pain. So is Chinchilla, she's just got a stunning range and her power gives me chills. She has amazing texture with the things she can do with her voice. I'm not religious, but I relate to the concept of using habits to escape pain so much and for me the thing that heals and helps the most for me is Music. It's a universal language that can unite people so much when it's used the right way. Please keep up the Ren love, the rabbit hole of Ren is seemingly unending and it's a pleasure to watch you go down it!

Yes, in the UK at least, the gallows ARE when they put a noose around your neck and pull the floor from beneath you so you hang. The wooden contraption where your head and hands poke out of holes and you are trapped is called a stock, used in the olden days as a form of punishment and humiliation. In this instance Ren is referring to the gallows/noose.

Art is Supposed to make you FEEL. Ren is a Singer, a Rapper, a Musician, a Composer, a Songwriter, an Actor.....an ARTIST. The only singer-songwriter that I can even begin to compare him to is Harry Chapin (with the songs "Taxi" and "Sequel" and then "Cats in the Cradle"). As an artist though, he reminds me a lot of Sting (from the Police). Ren is basically at the same place as Tom Macdonald was when he released "Dear Rappers", so I have a sneaking suspicion that he has studied Tom and taken copious amounts of notes on what he's done. The thing Ren has going for him, that Tom can't even begin to touch, is his musical ability. Ren cut his musical teeth Busking (street performing) in England, and that's given him an inherent ability to reach the audience (if he wanted to eat that night).

Gallows are for hanging, the other thing that you were talking about having your hands and head locked into, those are called 'stocks', though they do have other more colloquial names also.

Gallows are definitely the talk platforms they hang you on, but the brave heart scene you’re talking about is it’s the horses is called Quartering.

I love Ren's rap, but this song has been growing on me the more I hear it. I'm also blown away by Ren's cinematographer (I think Ren said his name is Sam), who is "making music" with his camera work. When he pans down to the corner of the room where Chinchilla is crouched, it made me think of a Hitchcock movie, where the camera would draw the audience's attention to a particularly important detail. Each of Ren's videos is like a miniature movie.

I hope Ren continues to use Sam (if that's his name) as his cameraman, because it's a great partnership. I also hope he does more work with Chinchilla; their voices complement each other very well.

Ren is an independent artist who encourages and enjoys the reaction scene so no need to pause any of his videos 😊

Gallows is for hanging. Stocks is for constraining your ankles and wrists in the wood planks. Pillory is like stocks but for wrists and neck.

I see it as drawing what we think we should be, so we push ourselves and our minds to be how we think it should be.

Hence the chalk outlines, but it took me 14 years to realise these outlines can be redrawn.

Stockade are the what cedric was discribing. The gallows you can stand on you toes, until the trapdoor drops. Than as you dangle, you are still above the ground.

Ren is so amazing and his story is one for the ages. Another really good song by these two is; How To Be Me. Watch the lyric version it will come across so much better. Plus the way the words are written, amazing.
