After my 2nd deployment to Afghanistan I was struggling really bad with PTSD and I felt like I was walking around with a floating chalk outline, numb, hollow, this song hits so hard for me personally and I've loved watching others find more of Ren's music.

I struggle with PTSD in large part from my experiences in the medical system. I agree with how hard this hits. Walking around in a floating chalk outline, going through the motions, staying in the box, while feeling dead inside. I think that is a universal human experience. Negative inner self talk that was fed data from every experience that ever hurt you or gave you the message that you were not enough,… we all feel isolated with this in one way or another and Ren shows us through his art, born of his pain, what a universal experience this is.

“Such a perfect day, take it just in case.” My daughter lost the battle with Mental illness and Addiction in 2021. She would manage to ruin good events with us by doing this very thing. Times when I had such hope for some “normalcy “ that I could provide for her, her daughter, and us. This song brought me to a breakthrough in healing and understanding of her point of view. Every freaking word. Also working on my own “reaction lyrics” because my perspective as a Mom can be described with this, as well. Ren is somewhat my “savior” at the moment. Much love, One love.

The scared of being okay line is interesting, and something I find very relatable. I struggle with anxiety, and you kind of get used to always being a little on edge. It becomes your normal. You get used to that heightened awareness, the edginess, it's almost comforting. I have had days where I have woken up and just felt really off. My heart rate has been lower than usual, and I had this really weird feeling, and that feeling almost becomes disconcerting and worrying. And then you realise, that feeling is calm. You just aren't anxious. And however silly it sounds, that, what is essentially "feeling ok" because it's not the norm, is very scary.

This was another great reaction. This song moves me to tears whenever I watch this video or hear this song because it describes my daily struggle over the past 25+ years. Ren has been able to express through his songs what I have been unsuccessfully trying to communicate to others regarding my mental, emotional, and physical struggles. I would also recommend you also check out Ren's other collaboration with Chinchilla, "How to Be Me," as well as their busking sessions in Brighton. As for "Chalk Outlines," it is one of my favorite songs right now; it is beautiful yet sad. Given Ren's medical history, I interpret this song to address mental illness diagnoses, and prescription psychotropics, which leave you emotionally dead (hence, the chalk outlines around your dead self). I can attest to the reality of this; for over 15 years, I was prescribed a cocktail of max doses of psychotropics until I decided to carefully wean myself off all medications in 2014. The side effects of the drugs were too many and too severe, left me an emotional zombie, and the benefits were negligible. I still struggle with my mental health, as well as physical symptoms, daily, but I rather feel pain than nothing at all.

"Act as if you're happy" is actually pretty good advice. I'm not a psychologist, I just have an interest in the topic, but it has been scientifically proven that even forcing yourself to smile changes the chemical state of your brain and can change your mood quite successfully. When combined with other behavioral changes, such as cutting out social media and the news, changing your diet, or avoiding negative influences and people in your life, it can really help to counteract the dark spiral many people get themselves into and eventually become a "habit" that continually works to protect you from returning to that state. I love this song so much, it really shows off his vocal skills. And Chinchilla is great, too. I would recommend checking out How To Be Me next, it's just as moving as this one.
@Apollo.Rising
@Apollo.Rising Жыл бұрын
I go back and forth on the "Act as if you're happy" bit. On the one hand yes, exactly what you said, the physical actions of your body can influence your mental state towards happiness. On the other hand, suppressing what's making you sad and covering it up with a smile isn't healthy either, what's pushed down just festers until you deal with it. I think its a balance, of acknowledging your pain and accepting its okay to feel that way, and then also using the tools at your disposal (including things like making yourself smile for the chemical boost) to move through it into the light.

Art is Supposed to make you FEEL. Ren is a Singer, a Rapper, a Musician, a Composer, a Songwriter, an Actor.....an ARTIST. The only singer-songwriter that I can even begin to compare him to is Harry Chapin (with the songs "Taxi" and "Sequel" and then "Cats in the Cradle"). As an artist though, he reminds me a lot of Sting (from the Police). Ren is basically at the same place as Tom Macdonald was when he released "Dear Rappers", so I have a sneaking suspicion that he has studied Tom and taken copious amounts of notes on what he's done. The thing Ren has going for him, that Tom can't even begin to touch, is his musical ability. Ren cut his musical teeth Busking (street performing) in England, and that's given him an inherent ability to reach the audience (if he wanted to eat that night).

I did enjoy a chuckle though... Twice actually. Brian, when you said "I'm not seeing any chinchillas yet..." and then again, when you said, "That's what she said!" I'm a female in a male dominated trade. I was rigid for many years, for fear of giving off the wrong impression & I didn't learn to relax for a very long time. Once I did, I had so much fun laughing with the guys at work. I can't tell you how many times I've heard, "that's what she said!". Good memories. I know you guys apologize for pausing all the time, but I love it, seeing you process Ren's lyrics is just so good. He is truly a wordsmith. Even on MY first listens to most of Ren's music, I have to pause to process. I cry almost every time I hear one of his emotional songs as well, he really is genius at helping a listener feel his pain. So is Chinchilla, she's just got a stunning range and her power gives me chills. She has amazing texture with the things she can do with her voice. I'm not religious, but I relate to the concept of using habits to escape pain so much and for me the thing that heals and helps the most for me is Music. Yes, in the UK at least, the gallows ARE when they put a noose around your neck and pull the floor from beneath you so you hang. The wooden contraption where your head and hands poke out of holes and you are trapped is called a stock, used in the olden days as a form of punishment and humiliation. In this instance Ren is referring to the gallows/noose.

I love Ren's rap, but this song has been growing on me the more I hear it. I'm also blown away by Ren's cinematographer (I think Ren said his name is Sam), who is "making music" with his camera work. When he pans down to the corner of the room where Chinchilla is crouched, it made me think of a Hitchcock movie, where the camera would draw the audience's attention to a particularly important detail. Each of Ren's videos is like a miniature movie.

I hope Ren continues to use Sam (if that's his name) as his cameraman, because it's a great partnership. I also hope he does more work with Chinchilla; their voices complement each other very well.

It's called The Stockade. The Gallows are where you're hanged. The Stockade is where your hands and head are through the wooden plank and you are left in the street.

Stockade are the what cedric was discribing. The gallows you can stand on you toes, until the trapdoor drops. Than as you dangle, you are still above the ground.

Dealing with severe chronic pain for the past 10 years that sent my (already effed up) mental illnesses into a downward spiral, that first line hits so hard. I just want a break. I need a moment please or just stop. Constant, Neverending, levels of hell pain definitely makes you feel sad, sometimes, when you wake up in the morning. Ppl don't want to hear about your illnesses so you keep it quiet keep it down... smile at everyone... die inside... wish you could just stop. Medications help some but fade who you are. You live in a foggy moderately painful world, or a clear excruciating, bedridden hell. Or you can go away for good. Three options. So far I'm choosing foggy. The clear was unsustainable. The third... well...I think of my son and my parents and bf and those who love me. And the pain it caused when others left that way. I'm 50 years old. Sometimes I feel too old to keep trying. So far... therapy and meds are keeping my head above water. I do wonder sometimes when it's gonna just be too much. I'm tired and old. I've battled MDD, DID, CPTSD, ADHD, agoraphobia and anxiety/ panic disorders my whole life. Since I was about 7 and first diagnosed. I've fought through and won so many times. I survived attempts to end myself as a teen. Medications, therapy.... and I finally started to get a handle on things. I was going out. I had friends. I was dealing with the anxiety and learning to actually LIVE not just survive. I had a bf (who stuck by me every day of this horror for the last 10 years, bless him). Then I fell. I fell down on my butt in the snow. Didn't even bruise. The next day I woke up with my back cramped. I figured I'd just strained something and it'd go away eventually. But it didn't. Over the next 6 months, the pain in my back became the least of them. I had to leave a fantastic job and fight for disability. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, arthritis, cfs, and degenerative disk disease. The fibro was triggered by the fall and the rest was already blooming but fibro apparently takes the pain volume and cranks it past the max. Sorry for the novel I just meant to share why these songs of his hit so hard. I truly hope his treatments get him to a place where he is truly dancing in the light more often than the dark. He's so young. If I quit it's no big deal, but he's gonna make a difference just by putting his music out there. Hell he's already making a difference. I think his videos should be mandatory viewing for all medical health workers. Listen to your patients. Anyway, great reactions!❤

I’ve had 10+ years of severe chronic pain as well. I get through it the best I can! I wish I hadn’t moaned in my twenties that life was hard 🙄😆😆 think I’ve jinxed myself ha ha Sometimes I’m amazed at how high achieving I am considering, other times it’s so hard and I’d rather be giving birth than deal with the pain level 🤩

I was told by a cop that the chalk outlines are put down when they have to move the body. So like if the person isn't dead and they need to get them to the hospital. The stocks are what your hands and neck are trapped in the wood frame. The gallows are the structure they hang people from. The line "bury myself in a great big smile" hits me because I lied for so long and pretended to be happy until I lost all sense of who I was. Nothing felt real. I still have trouble.

Beautiful song and I tear up and get chills listening. Prob cuz I do relate. Maybe not with pills but fake smile and “I’m ok” chalk outline. Used to use some alcohol and bottle up my feelings. Not anymore. I’m unapologetically me but this is a reminder of where I was and now I use my past pain to help others And look at Cedric pullin up with Tom bars! Lol.
