I love this kind of thing. People should do it more often. This is literally street art. Be it playing music on your block, or doing this, or writing nice notes and hiding them around town. Anything. There are so many people who will be made happy. It can make someone’s day, while you’re doing it, or even after. Good work Peter. Keep it up. 🙂

Definitely do more sidewalk chalk. You should also try chalk pastels on paper they can be quite fun to play with because they come in interesting colors and they blend well. You can also spray a fixative like you do with graphite or charcoal and draw overtop of it with a fountain pen.

I remember summers ago I would be outside in the scorching sun for hours at a time drawing on the driveways and sidewalks with chalk pastels to the point where there was nothing left but little stubs of chalk and I'd somehow find a way to keep them drawing until they vanished. those were the wonderous days of chalk smeared sweat covered faces and raw fingertips from blending on concrete for a hole day. so worth it!

This makes me think of those sand mandalas that Buddhist monks make and then scatter into the wind. There is something so freeing about sidewalk chalk drawings because they're impermanent it takes some of the pressure of of trying to make it perfect if you don't end up liking your lines they'll be gone next time it rains

Crayola brand has a black chalk but it's more like a dark grey. But you can spray your drawing with water to make richer colors, or like i like to wet my stick of chalk and draw with it like that. Wetting the black chalk stick makes a pretty okay black.

I do side walk art the summer for events and such, so what I use is a mixture of corn starch and water with a ton of food colouring. I'm sure you could experiment with it to see if you could make a black chalk. Maybe mix with charcoal?? Also crappy dollar store paint brushes are best for the cornstarch 'paint' mixture.

Here in Pasadena, CA, we have an annual sidewalk chalk exhibition. The outdoor mall near city hall has "large" cement rectangles that act as the canvases. I think artists have to submit an application to participate. Some of what is produced is spectacular and I am amazed by 99.9% of what is shown each year. I also think one of the techniques used to cover large areas is to crush the chalk sticks into a powder and then mix with water so a brush can be used to "paint" large areas.. The art is exhibited for a few days after the competition concludes, so people can appreciate it, and then the city comes in and washes it all away. What you drew would be quite unique. If you are into travelling to do art, or competitions, then I definitely think you should look into it. :-)

Hey Spideyman. Chalk is just calcium carbonate, the same things sea shells, teeth and bone are made out of. So it's naturally bright, and many black chalks just turn out grey. As a tip, you can use your teeth as chalk alternatives if you're feeling extra spicy.

I was trying to see if I could find any dark sidewalk chalk and all I could find was that crayola does have a blcak/dark grey one in their packs But! What I did find was something I had forgotten about but I definitely used a lot when I was a kid: glow in the dark chalk! so at least that could probably be pretty cool on a lighter background, cause it may not be that visible during the day but it looks pretty cool at night :P

A couple years ago, my friends and I covered our entire street with a huge chalk maze. We used three huge buckets of chalk. We also made one for the Fourth of July. That one wasn’t a maze. I drew George Washington. Someone said that they would try to get the news to come, but it never happened, and thus, it was more of a fun thing between everybody on the street.
