Hi John, Massive fan of your work and appreciate the videos, you say in this video that the paint that you use for the black background is oil based but dries within 30 minutes, the reason I mention it is because traditional Oil based paints like gloss are usually touch dry in 24 hours fully hardened in 7 days, yet spirit based paints like undercoat and exterior masonry paints are often Acrylic resin will dry in the time scale that you suggest, I know you joke about Royalty, but I have been a royal decorator for the past 5 years, keep up the good work.

John, finally watching one of your videos - how fantastic, you are so talented. Very useful too, the girls and I are into calligraphy at the moment Milly is doing a typography topic in her art GCSE. I so want a workshop like yours (but with heating) and a whole range of paints etc. Going to go through a lot more and seriously have a go - I mean have some fun having a go. Lots of love, we miss the Neals xx.

I love what you do, truly interesting too watch! I wish I had the ability too create such artistic displays with liquid chalk myself. Thank you for posting your videos, and sharing your talent with the world of youtube.

Hi Tony, You are quite right. This video was four years ago. I now use an acrylic smooth masonry paint. It's water based and cheaper than an oil based paint. Thanks for your kind comments. Royalty eh? Bet you have some tales to tell. I once worked at the Queen's Head. Does that count?

Wow, I find this fascinating. Thank-you for sharing. I love playing around with chalk, though obviously it's embarrassing compared to what you can do. Oh, and you have a great accent, too.

Hi Karen, Sounds like you have some more time on your hands. Thanks for your interest and kind words about the calligraphy and lettering. I am planning another video soon, are there any particular issues you want covering? Trusting you both and the girls are well.

Did some display boards for a guys grand opening. Stayed up all night. They were beautiful. My price was low too. I was just getting started and needed the work. Delivered them and the guy started speaking to his father about them (for quite a long time) in a foreign language. Then he said he was disappointed because I had not erased my pencil guidelines. They were faint and actually held the type together quite nicely. I said, "fine, you don't have to pay for them" and I grabbed them up and threw them into the back of my car and drove off leaving the rude jackass with his grand opening and no signs.

I try to erase lines where I can and I only use pencil crayons not regular graphite ones. They are too shiny. Pity your client was so fussy. Still you live and learn. Good to see you had an escape route.

Why wouldn’t you just erase them at that point?

Thanks for this info. Since you are in the UK, I'm wondering how available the pens and black paint is, locally here. I used MDO (Medium Density Overlay) for outdoor use but is probably much more expensive. Usually, oil base paints do not dry to a flat finish, so yours might be special and probably not found in our local (California) hardware store,(I'll check).

Hi John....thanks for the video and info. Does the ink wash off to re-use the blackboard again? Or is it permanent?

Hi John - really enjoying your tutorials and have recently tried my hand chalkboarding for a couple of local pubs. I live near Oxford and was wondering if you know of anywhere I can do a course to improve my work? Rob

I love the cleanness for the paint pens, but I am worried about washing them off. We tend to switch out signs a lot with daily specials and what not. Is there a paint marker that you recommend for that kind of work?
@jrwren10 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeremiah. These pens do not wash off. You need to use a wipe off pen or real chalk. Actually the ink does wash off windows etc with a scrub with washing soda (sodium carbonate) but with the black boards I just paint over with black paint.

Hi John, I'm really enjoying your informative videos !! Question, in other videos you state that the Wickes smooth black masonry paint that you use is water based ... but in this video you state that it is oil based. I live in United States and I tried to find Wickes, but was unable. Do you have any substitute suggestions ? You're a great artist !!!
@JRLNeal5 жыл бұрын
Gosh you are right Ann. It must have been a slip of the tongue. The black base paint is a water based, smooth masonry paint. The stores sell 'blackboard' or 'chalkboard paint' which is often oil based but I'd avoid it. Go for the water based. Glad to know you find the videos useful. Thanks for your kind comments.

I'm confused. If it doesn't wash off why do you call it chalkboard art? Chalkboards erase very easily.
@jrwren3 жыл бұрын
The board was originally for chalk but now we use acrylic ink. Probably the same logic as to why we refer to cars with horse power when there is not a nag to be seen.
