I love this scene- it demonstrates true power. Mr. White didn't even have to stand up, and the man who meant him harm still got the ass-beating he deserved. He didn't even need to ask, they all knew what was expected of them. Chalky is one powerful individual in that town.

I love the way the atmosphere flows. Purnsley rips the book out of chalky's hands so he's expecting chalky to make a move. Then chalky does his roll call and throws the ball in purnsley's court when he says 'alright then'. Then purnsley goes for the punch

Yeah he was testing Purnsley. Giving him one last chance to apologize and back down. In a way, by continuing to fight, it showed Chalky he was a true fighter which would make him valuable as a soldier, but it also let him know Purnsley could never be fully trusted as he didn’t have enough sense to know when he was fighting impossible odds.

This reminds me of the scene where Catelyn Stark calls out all of her fathers bannermen before arresting Tyrion. HBO shows all seem to take inspiration from each other lol

Such a powerful scene... The reality that he isn't some upitty black man doing the white man's biding, he's an associate and held in high esteem amongst both blacks and whites... Which demonstrates that this is the way to move in the world, to work with those willing to work with you...

The actors playing the black characters in this show did such a great job like all others in portraying the culture to the time with such accuracy even down the voices.
