Good Stuff Kane! Monster in the middle is one of my favorite methods of Inititive, it keeps the game moving, allows for shorter GM turns, makes the combats more dynamic, and terrifying. The other thing I do is Damage at the End. If a thing is standing at the beginning of a round they get a turn to act. If a character takes enough damage to go down but the healer can restore enough HP to prevent them from falling at the end of the round they remain upright for the next round. If a character goes down they are down for the next whole round while someone tends to their wounds.

Really liked the explicit call out to talk to your players about how they feel about the timer/duration. I think it's easy to forget as a GM that we can ask people how they feel, and don't have to make decisions all on our own.

Really like the budget analogy here. Timers/Duration is one of those areas of the game that can feel a little nebulous to me, but this made it a lot more concrete. Thanks for the tips
