Tashi's smile/laugh at the end was because she FINALLY got to see "good f**king tennis." Art finally showed some real passion in his final match with Patrick.

He is the director, not the writer. And in that interview he and the actors where talking about their guesses about what happened after the film, and there was not a definitive answer, they just gave their opinion. If the director wanted to make that finale, he would have filmed it, but it wasn't his story and the script, and the movie itself has an open ending deliberately. I like that idea, and i agree that could definitely happen, but you make it sound like that ending is the real ending of the film, but it isn't.

I think this is one of those movies you have to watch more than once to fully appreciate every nuance of it. There's just so many layers to it that different people can take away different things from it. I love films like this where it starts a conversation about who is really the bad guy and who is the good guy and what each thing means. You can view this film in so many different contexts and none of them would necessarily be wrong - that's true art right there.

I'm glad I rewatched it because my perspective totally shifted on 2nd viewing. The first-time I saw it I thought of Tashi as sort of a villain, but on rewatch I was much more sympathetic to her and instead thought Art was the worst of the three as his weasel-like manipulations led to the ending of Patrick and Tashi's relationship, Tashi being in a bad headspace which led to her injury and the division among the three.
@PowerDiva5 ай бұрын
@@JJdaPK that's what I love about it - how many layers there are to each character. I think Tashi and Patrick were a better fit for each other, but he challenged her and she wasn't ready for that. As we later see though, she never could really walk away from him - even after marrying and starting a family with Art. Patrick and Art were called Fire and Ice, but I think Tashi and Patrick were the real Fire and Ice.

I don't think Tashi actually went to college for other skills.. it was a marketing strategy that many athletes go with. The "humble" approach/beginning before going pro. She said she was planning on going pro before the end of their first year at Stanford, so that was always her and her family's intentions
@mariap25915 ай бұрын
having seen the film 3 times now, the film’s narrative is being heavily driven by Tashi and seen through her lens. the ending itself, especially Tashi’s reaction in the very last shot cements that for me. even the fact that the film ends with her seems to further solidify that idea because in the end, she got everything she ever wanted. the boys finally gave her that "good f*cking tennis" she so badly wanted to watch from day 1. Tashi also got the boys to finally understand how tennis "is an (intimate) relationship” between two people (this is also essentially the entire thesis of the film). art’s and patrick’s performance during the tiebreak very much demonstrated that; therefore, allowing Tashi the ability to live vicariously through them both as though she were on that court playing the game herself. when she stood up and screamed her guttural "come on!!" one final time, it was because she got everything she ever asked for and wanted, including, the high that she used to feel all those years ago when playing tennis herself before the injury ever took place.

after patrick did the sign, IT MOTIVATES ART. They three rely on each other for their own satisfaction. and because of that, Tashi got to finally watch some good fucking tennis. and then, Patrick got to fuck tashi again and get his best friend back. I think that's the major point of the movie.

I expected this film to be just a sexy love triangle tennis film, so I didn't expect the characters to be interesting, but they were actually complex, and the relationship was very interesting. The directing, cinematography, acting, score, etc, is all great, very good film and I didn't expect it, it's too 3 for me of the year up there with Dune Part 2, and Furiosa. And I like the ambiguity of the ending, not every film needs to have a decisive ending, it's nice to have some original ambiguous ending. Not many channels react to really good films like these and mostly react to overrated franchises and content that will give them a lot of views and likes, so I respect y'all for reacting to these films. I would love to see you guys react to The Holdovers, Poor Things, Anatomy of a Fall, All of Us Strangers, May December, American Fiction, and The Zone of Intrest, and Love Lies Bleeding is another underrated film of the year; it's a A24 film, and it's great.

We were a bad person they all are. No one is worse than the other they used each other for as much as they needed to. Patrick’s a selfish narcissist….He’s just honest about it. But I refuse to believe that if these characters were IRL, that you’d genuinely support or find Patrick to be the kindest, least toxic. I need yall Art haters to realize that his ONE toxic act was try to break up their own toxic relationship at the AGE OF 19. Patrick was in his THIRTIES, and willfully being this homeless, home-wrecking mess (and you can blame that on Art ruining their friendship and pushing him away from him and Tashi if you want but it’d be delusional to think he isn’t accountable at all for any of his actions). Art was the only actual adult out of the 3 that wanted to be a loving parent and husband while Patrick was just an immature horndog the whole movie. I can’t take any of these kinds of pro-Patrick, anti-Art takes at face value because of how unserious and out of touch with reality the Patrick vs. Art comparison really is.
@cutienerdgirl5 ай бұрын
@@patmcconnell9956That was a first date. You cannot compare stopping to talk to someone in the middle of a first date with a stranger to *SABOTAGING AND ABANDONING YOUR BEST FRIEND!* What did Patrick really do to Art and Tashi to receive their wrath? You can say he slept with Tashi while she was with Art, but that was after Art tried to sow seeds of doubt in Patrick and Tashi's relationship and completely stopped talking to him to get with Tashi. Also, it takes two to tango. Tashi bares most, if not all, the responsibility for the affair. Art needs to take some of his anger out on his wife for her infidelity and threatening to leave him if he quits tennis. Secondly, Art being 19 years old when he betrayed his best friend doesn't absolve him of anything, especially since he's still acting like he did nothing wrong 13 years later. Third, it isn't toxic to live in your car for 13 years instead of running back to your parents. Art being supposedly being a "loving father" to Lily (we never even see them interact in the movie) doesn't make him better than Patrick because he's a horndog. People without kids aren't any less respectable than people with kids. Lastly, Patrick didn't deserve to be slapped, spit on, and told he "has a better shot putting a gun to his mouth" instead of succeeding in tennis. In summary, Patrick sleeping with Tashi while she was taken is better than Tashi verbally degrading & threatening her husband and Art sabotaging the relationship of his best friend.

I feel like you guys were splendid at spotting the roadsigns up ahead regarding plot, really observant and on it. But truly, the outcome of the match doesn't matter really, does it? it's not a film about tennis, tennis is the backdrop for the interplay between these characters, all of whom are as irredeemable and messed up as each other, who need each other desperately. I saw someone describe a love triangle as a shape where all corners need to meet and to me, this achieves that in great fashion. my film of the year. also, Zen-'day'-a.
