i adore her. she is a stunning novelist who does cross racial and gender lines, however that does not negate her own race and gender.

She wasn't be racist at all. She was using "white" and "male" as examples because they are the opposite of what she is. She use those adjective to create contrast and explain that she takes pride in the 'labels' that are presented to her. She is who she is and she doesn't want to be anyone else.

Limit her canvas??? As a painter, Black embodies all of the "other" colors of the spectrum but as a writer BLACKNESS embodies the full emotional range of humanity. 🎨🖼🖤

"You aren't really in the big leagues if you are a woman writer." Wow, way to be wrong from the very first line... I suppose they do say start as you plan to go on. The fact is that there are no "leagues" in writing, there are just books that are commercially successful & those who aren't. An if you are prolific & successful people start to follow your writing... Thats it. There is nothing particularly hard about being a female writer, over being a male writer, so stop with the gender begging nonsense & join us in actual reality.

+matthewlane Dude, how can you say "there is nothing particularly hard about being a female writer..."? Have you ever been a woman writer? Just take half a moment to consider things beyond your own perspective. Maybe you'll end up being right maybe you'll end up being wrong, as long as you actually and unbiasedly consider both sides.

Rose Pineau "Dude, how can you say "there is nothing particularly hard about being a female writer..."? Easily, I opened my mouth & words came out. Because there is literally nothing particularly hard about being a female writer. You have literally the same challenges as any other writer. "Have you ever been a woman writer?" Actually yes, I have. Yeah that took you by surprise didn't it. See the only thing that makes a female author a female author is by the author self identifying as such,. since the only access to the author that the public has is the name they give. An since I've been paid to write under a good half dozen different pen names, including female pen names where appropriate, I can answer yes I have been a female writer. "Just take half a moment to consider things beyond your own perspective." It has nothing to do with perspective, perspective is a case of subjective conjecture, it either objectively IS or IS NOT harder to be a female author. "Maybe you'll end up being right maybe you'll end up being wrong" I already am right, you've not added any kind of rebuttal to that point. So when you are ready, formulate a real rebuttal & try again.

Having a female pen name does not mean you automatically understand what being a female writer is like. If you have multiple pen names then you're obviously already established as a writer. Did you establish yourself as a female or a male? It does have to do with persepctive. As a male, you do not have a woman's perspective. As a female, I do not have a man's perspective. You obviously did not consider anything beyond your pinhole male perspective.

Rose Pineau "Having a female pen name does not mean you automatically understand what being a female writer is like." Sure it does,. since there is literally no other difference in what you are doing since the very act of writing is a 100% intellectual endeavor. Unless of course you think women write with their vaginas. "If you have multiple pen names then you're obviously already established as a writer." LOL no, it means I write under multiple pen names, each one individually & none of them associated with each other. "It does have to do with persepctive." No it really doesn't: Either a thing IS or it IS NOT, 1+1=2 not because I have a perspective that it equals two, not because I'm male & maleness says it equals two, no it equals two because it objectively equals two. Same holds true here, either it is objectively harder for women, who objectively have uniquely female based hardships in the field of writing, or there isn't.

+matthewlane You come across as extremely arrogant and self-assured. Maybe a little humility might help. Morrison clearly meant this within the context of her own life and her own experiences. "something called women's fiction...there used to be". And then "It's changing, slowly." These aren't sweeping statements. She is commenting on the evolution and development of female writers within her own lifetime. Either way, ease up on convoluted prose. You aren't impressing anyone.

that was an appalingly racist thing she said about white male writers. I'm shocked that no one has criticized her.

She spoke HER TRUTH for the Time. Her Critics would be out of step with Wisdom and Time to criticize her. She knew who she was and her viewpoint mattered then and even more so TODAY. (2018)
