E248: 🎙️ Welcome to The English Like a Native Podcast, your go-to resource for intermediate to advanced English learners. I'm Anna, your host, and in today's episode, we're delving into the fascinating world of language teaching and learning with some remarkable guests: Irina, Richard, and Maria, each with their unique stories and insights into the realm of English education.
🇺🇸 🇬🇧 Irina shares her extraordinary experience of teaching English in China, where she had to adopt an American persona to comply with a company's wishes. Richard recounts his journey from Hungary to the UK, navigating language barriers and dialect diversity along the way. And Maria reflects on her transition from finance to teaching, highlighting the transformative power of education.
📝🗣 Together, we explore the nuances of language acquisition, from the challenges of pronunciation to the unfortunate 'native-speakerism' bias that is prevalent in English-language teaching today.

It was such a good idea to address that topic, Anna.Thank you for giving a voice to non-native English teachers. It was enlightening, eye-opening and fascinating. I want to thank you and Maria and Irina and Richard for brilliantly sharing their experiences and their views. I loved your perfect conclusions to all and I hardly have something to add. That unfortunate 'native-speakerism' bias I wasn't really aware of, that is semingly prevalent in English-language teaching today is quite a shame indeed. We all need to be more open and receptive towards each other. It's difference and diversity that makes each of us rich and the world rich. Wouldn't a world where everyone was perfect, with people who were all similar and 'perfect', without flaws or faults, be a monotonous, terrible and infinitely sad place?... As English is the international language and as Sabrah so aptly pointed out in a recent short, in the end very few British people make the effort to learn a foreign language, and only 35% of them speak one (and less than 20% of Americans!). So it's worth remembering that the person who should be proud of themselves, and I would even say whatever their level, is the one who has learned (and continues to learn) and speaks English or any other foreign language. Merci ! Thank you so much Anna for sharing that wonderful conversation you conducted brilliantly with amazing guests. 👏🙏 You're the best; have a lovely Sunday! Luv' ya 😘🌹❤❤❤

Very interesting! One question: I noticed that the names of your guests are pronounced in an anglicized fashion; Maria, Irina and Richard sound different from Мария, Ирина and Richárd. I understand that Irina had to pretend to be American - did your guests use Anglicized names out of choice or because they felt they "had to" - or both? As an Anglophone who speaks German and Russian well and Hungarian (very) badly: I agree with Irina's observation that there is markedly more regional variation in accents in the UK and the Germany than in Russia
