Challenging 4WD Recovery

Many lessons learnt from this experience .... there can be such a small margin for error.
I will forever be grateful to John and Alison, strangers who came out to recover my 4WD for nothing more than petrol money.
And to my mates for calmly dealing with the situation & making the vehicle safe before recovery could be effected.
I will be running a winch before tackling this type of track again.

Once I was like that with my D3, we made a similar recovery too, but we also used the roof rack to make the vehicle safe, it helps to prevent rollover

Great recovery job. I’m very keen to get a bull bar and winch for my D4 as well and have looked at ARB and OL, only glitch for me is after fitting a bar and winch you only have 100kg “payload” left on the front axle before maxing out.Annoying that such a great off roader has so few after market accessories. A hidden winch behind the original bumper was another thing I looked at but none are ADR compliant in Oz, OK in Europe tho so can’t understand why not here.Be very interested to see which winch and bar you choose so please keep us updated. Cheers James

A question please, in the video it seems that the trees on your left were not too far from the car, could you have been able to lean on them if you were alone with a front winch???
@sienaoverland

I don't think the trees would have helped, just not quite in the right place. A strap to the side/rear tensioned with a ratchet would have worked together with a winch (if I'd had one).

I have skid plates welded to the underside of the sliders. The gap was too small to pass the winch hook or soft shackle through. The plates are good for preventing sticks coming up between slider and door and also prevent stones flung by front wheels from hitting rear arch flares. They also aid sliding over some obstacles. But now I know some holes are needed to allow a shackle to be attached.
@LMY-ih4jl
@LMY-ih4jl 4 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's a thriller! The trail seemed to be rather straightforward, who knew it may be that dangerous. Btw, why did you saw the sill? And, what happened to the suspension, why did it drop?
@sienaoverland
@sienaoverland 4 жыл бұрын
The rock slider has a bottom plate to prevent sticks and stones coming up through and hitting doors. It also helps slide over obstacles better. But it needed a hole for the winch rope to be attached. I have now added two holes each side for any future situations where I need to hold it from moving sideways.

wow that was sketchy and from what seemed like a mundane situation - do you think you could have recovered yourself with a front winch - genuine question not being smart. I am thinking that a winch is a must on my D4 seeing events like these.
@sienaoverland
@sienaoverland 5 жыл бұрын
This is my main motivation for posting the video; the potential consequences from a mundane situation & not focusing on risks in the right priority. Yes I believe self recovery was feasible with a front winch. But it also needed the rear sideways restraint, which could have been provided by a strap tensioned with a 2t ratchet, a couple of which will be added to my recovery kit now.

@@sienaoverland the other thing that might also help is recover backwards. Everything is a choice on the day so there is no right or wrong unless it doesn't work... You can always stop and replan, that's the beauty of having a few vehicles and winches to recover someone. You got it out which is the main thing, but if the mistakes and talking helps people in the future it's all worth it. :-) Everyday should still be a school day even for the competent and professionals, that's what life is all about. :-)

I don’t normally comment on stuff like this and not to be rude but this is some extremely amateur stuff..I have worked with and ran land rovers mostly the D2 platform and some LR3/4 off-road in Overland for a long time but it just makes me sad to see this in America because it makes the Land Rover community look weak and that is the reason why serious off-road guys that use jeeps and other rigs do you not see Land Rovers as serious contenders off-road because every time they go on KZbin you see some stupid stuff like this.. I mean for god sake‘s you’re on a beginners trail with spotters lmao smh 🤦‍♂️.. and as far as what the heck you guys are trying to do with your recovery is insane you made it so hard when it could have been so easy smh.
