After Stephen Taylor and I showed off our skills on the Duallist D4 pedal, Eric form ‪@EMCproductions‬ decided he wanted to give it a shot. If ANYONE could figure this pedal out quickly, it would be him! So I hopped onto Drumeo and found 2 beginner double bass exercises. The First, by Ash Pearson, on playing the rhythmic pyramid on your feet (or foot in our case), and the 2nd, by Alex Rudinger, on double bass fills. I thought these 2 lessons covered the basics you would need to know to start playing double bass and was a good challenge for Eric to play
If you haven't heard of the Duallist D4 pedal, it works like a normal bass pedal BUT theres an extra beater that plays on the up-stroke when lifting off the footboard. It DEFINITELY takes some getting used to! From my short time playing on it I don't think we will be replacing out double bass pedals anytime soon...

*I have an idea on how to dramatically improve this pedal!!* I’d love to see you test this modification idea out An analogy first: Have you ever ridden a bike with toe cages in the pedals? It’s scary at first because your feet are kinda strapped to the pedals - but once you get used to it (and get used to quickly taking your foot out of the pedal just in case you need to catch yourself during a fall or whatever) you realize it’s a wayyyy more efficient and faster and better-controlled way of riding a bike. Because you’re not relying entirely on the downward force from your legs applied to the pedals - you can LIFT the pedals with your toes now - meaning you can make use of a whole new set of muscles, redistribute the strain around your body, and have power and control with both legs at all times. I feel like a drummer’s kick pedal which has functionality on the upstroke should have a toe strap or clip or basket or something which gives you the ability to physically and intentionally lift the pedal instead of relying on the springs. I feel like this would let you control the timing and attack and all the other little nuances that the dualist is normally bad at reproducing. You should try adding a little adjustable Velcro strap to the toe of this pedal! Or something like that? Maybe try looking up various bike pedal clips/baskets/cages for inspiration? Or hell, you can probably buy a bike pedal toe accessory and literally attach it to this drum pedal! That could be cool too, and maybe even the most functional and adjustable way to go. I’d watch the shit out of that video.

I think you should increase the spring tension, it could make it more responsive on high speeds and give more control on slow speeds, all the time it feels like he is fighting against the pedal. Would be nice to know how it works on higher tension, I really would like to try these 😎
@shadow105720

Seems like the tension is pretty high already. The beaters are responding pretty quickly to the foot, just that there's one going the opposite way. The slowness of the second beater seems to be from trying to catch the first beater on the way back.

Hey david I think I have the solution for this pedal. The main problem I see with the duallist is that you only have control on the "up strokes" (when in order to move the beater you have to move your feet upward) if you go faster. If you had some sort of grip that kept your feet attached to the pedal, I suppose it would be really helpful at slower speeds at least. I suggest you to try some bike pedal straps (the belcro ones). Hope it works! Greetings from Argentina!

Regarding this thing of "one-footed double pedals", I think a Sonor one is more interesting. The second beater was actioned with a heel plate while the main beater is controlled with the main foot board, so you can control what you play exactly like a conventional pedal except that heel-toe technique means literally heel-toe (there's some video by there of a guy using two of those with two bass drums and it's.... well, fast. I never tried one of those, but they are Sonor Giant Steps, wich it's their top line pedals, so I guess quality shouldn't be a concern. However they don't make it any more... go figure why... 🤔🤣. (If Rdavidr could ever put their hands... or feet, on one of those, it would be interesting). By the way, those things are cool as a curiosity/experiment, but I still prefer the good old conventional double pedals/bass drums.

I'm not saying this pedal doesn't have its uses, and certainly, for someone like me who loves extreme metal, I could see the value in it. The issue is this: with a single pedal or a double pedal, each pedal is still an individual mechanism. Truly the only thing that holds you back from being a one-footed John Bonham or a two-footed George Kollias is your foot/feet themselves. The pedals will respond. With this pedal, you have, at least from what I'm seeing here and in other videos, no control over that second beater, unless you disable it. You lose the ability to do quick doubles, or triplets with one foot cause you immediately have that second beater come into play. I know there are metal drummers who have used these and I've seen older videos of guys in metal ripping it up. These things are a mechanism only. I think, and maybe I'm wrong, but it'd be easier to learn double kick using a double pedal or two single pedals that way you maintain some control. And yes, before anyone in the comments goes ballistic on me: I know you can slide the pedal over to disable the second beater but who has time for that if you're in the middle of a show or, even worse a recording session. I think metal drummers who have developed their foot speed and chops wouldn't need something like this. And for players in other genres, like rock or fusion, you might get it to work just fine but you must learn how to operate the mechanism, which is a whole new set of skills. Rather than working on your footwork, singly or doubly, which to me is always more important.
@THECAPTAINCAKEZ
@THECAPTAINCAKEZ 2 жыл бұрын
I’d say what you should consider here is the accessibility of this pedal. Amputees and stroke victims with limited to no control of one side of the body may be barred from jamming with the music they love due to being physically limited. This pedal can act as a tool to grant accessibility into metal for the disabled. As an able bodied drummer this pedal seems like a gimmick to me, but I can imagine the value it provides to certain groups.
@keepthemetalflowing
@keepthemetalflowing 2 жыл бұрын
@@THECAPTAINCAKEZ I agree, but I could not think of every possible reason for someone to own one of them. And yes, you're right: someone who has had an autopsy of some sort or a stroke or whatever could use a pedal like this to great advantage. My point was for those of us who play with all for limbs in tact. But your point is a good and well noted, thank you.

Sorry if my reply does get rather long. But have you not thought about the fact that the dualist pedal, or anything else like it, actually leaves your other foot free to control the hi-hat pedal, for example? This is why the entire concept of "double pedals" is, actually, rather flawed... they completely take away this type of control by design. This is actually why I've really disliked the idea of double bass drum pedals ever since I heard of it. Or, what if you have a foot-operated tambourine or shaker or something like that? You could use that while playing a dual-beater bass drum pedal, while still using the snare drum and tom-toms and cymbals and so on. Point is, you're not occupying literally both of your feet in the task of double bass drumming parts... one of your feet is completely free to do whatever else you want it to do. Taking this a step further, this same concept could be amazing for anyone who performs as a one-man band. Say you have a drum kit which is entirely operated by foot pedals. This frees up both your hands for playing piano, for example (I play piano, so I'm looking at it from that perspective). If the pedal for the bass drum were to control 2 independent beaters, that would still free up your other foot for the snare drum or cymbals or anything else. Going even further, this idea could be applied to the entire drum kit; 2 strikers for every piece of the kit. That opens up the ability to play double strokes on the bass drum and snare drum at the same time, for instance.

Said it on the other vid, and I'll say it again here... this thing is pretty useless for double bass playing, BUT it's really useful for percussionists! Once the settings get sorted (as they're garbage when you first get it) it works REALLY well for playing mounted tambourine, cowbell, blocks, etc, while your hands are doing other things. Being able to do multiple things at once ups your value to a band, and most importantly, KEEPS THE TAMBOURINE/COWBELL OUT OF THE HANDS OF THE SINGER!

I'm just going to say what I think. This pedal is a stupid gimmick. Save your money and buy a double pedal up front, rather than waste your time with this, then have to go buy a double pedal. I get the feeling that it's supposed to be like an easy cheat for single kick players to do double stuff, but it seems like WAY more work to play this well. Not to mention, the left beater seems incapable of hitting hard enough to produce a good transient from the drum. Dumb, just dumb. Sorry. Entertaining video regardless though, David.

@justinnaramor6050
@justinnaramor6050 Жыл бұрын
Anything like this is only "dumb" if it offers no real advantages over the "tried and true" double pedals. Come on, think about this critically before you criticize. The core idea, that is, having two drum beaters controlled by one pedal (and even just the core idea of performing double bass drumming with one foot), is actually worth considering because it has advantages. Anyone who really takes the time to think about this would understand. I rather say that if the dualist pedal is "dumb", it's not the core idea that's "dumb", rather it's how the dualist executes the idea that's "dumb". It can be seen that the dualist literally uses the upstroke of the pedal (that is, when you lift your foot upward) to activate that second beater. I think you can already see how problematic this is especially for those drummers who are already used to conventional pedals, whereby a beater hits the drum only on the downward motion of the foot. It's pretty clear that the drummer in this video was sort of struggling to play the pedal, likely for this very reason; you pretty much have to throw everything you know about playing normal bass drum pedals out the window when using that pedal.

Why does this guy look like he has never played a drumset before?

EMCproductions is more from the Marching community. Spent 4 years playing Tenors and other percussion, including drumset with The Commandant's Own, U.S. Marines Drum and Bugle Corps. You should check out his channel. He's currently at 192K subscribers. He's done a few collab videos with rdavidr!

Nice idea in theory, worthless in practicality. After 30+ year of playing standard pedals, I’m not about to try and relearn for this thing. Certainly not at that price.🙄

I tried one of these and honestly I couldn't stand it. I use two kick drums with regular pedals and even some double pedals feel strange to me, but that's not a debate I feel is necessary as it's all personal preference. But this duallist pedal thing, it's just weird and seems like a novelty or a niche thing especially since it seems like the usual techniques we all know and practice don't work with it...

What a useless piece of junk. Can't come up with one thing this would be useful in. You guys are brave playing this publicly!
