I used to go to the U of I/Urbana once a year for a conference, pre-pandomic. And I was shocked at how low the rent was and what you got with it. I have to look-see if those rents went up, but at that time it was super cheap. Nice apartments. The bus transportation was very good too and really low priced. If you're on campus it's free.

There is a reason people are bailing out of here in droves. It used to be a nice area to live.

@@johnbrowning1365 They basically stopped policing for two years. No speeding tickets even. Police wouldn't even come out for traffic accidents unless there were injuries. I was in one and that's what they told me. The last few months they put cops back on the streets. There are still businesses closed up all over here. Lots of closed up restaurants. Even some fast food and hair cutting places. Drive around Champaign-Urbana before you move here. This is no longer a nice area. Weed, heroin and meth are popular. You can avoid a lot of the problems by living on the western side of Champaign outside of town. The area west of Parkland College is pretty nice. Then a lot of Savoy is also. The best areas of Urbana are Northeast and Southeast edges. The surrounding towns like Mahomet, Monticello and St Joseph aren't bad. Avoid Rantoul, Decatur and Danville.
