Thanks for tri-fuel tutorial. I too just bought this generator after having been without power in central Texas for 5 days. My house is equipped with inverter minis-plits and I was not willing to risk damaging them with my Generac 5500. We woke up to 40f temps and seeing our breath every morning. I'm looking forward to adding this propane option since we have a 250gallon tank on the property.

A wonderful informative video that you did a great job in presentation of. I just ordered the same model ( Champion 100520 ) yesterday with the tri-fuel kit as I will run it on Natural Gas. I have been using mini-split HVAC units for over 7 years and a (Heat-Pump water heater) almost 2 years, great choices for almost anyone unless they live where it is cold more often than warm.

Hey Ozzie, that pass thru ammeter idea was awesome. When I saw all the parts listed I was like "Oh I am so going to do this for my genny" and then quickly found out there was no schematic. Being a electrical wiring noob of little knowledge but tons of caution I took a screen shot of the innards of it when you were holding it up and managed to figure out how to get it wired. All the parts came in this weekend and to my great amazement works it like a champ. Thanks for posting the video and inspiring me to try something new.

Thanks for the nice response. I love my mini split systems even though my six year old 4 ton HVAC runs just fine. I only run this system every three or four months for about an hour just to keep the freon in the system moving somewhat actively. But my mini split systems are what cools and heats my house. They use much less electricity when compared to traditional HVAC systems. And just like I said in my video, my new inverter generator can run them just fine. Although it'll be pretty rare that I run all four mini split systems at once during a power outage but at least I know my inverter generator can do the job if need be.

3600 RPM is required in a normal generator because that works out to 60hz, which is what the US power grid provides. An inverter generator crates the waveform electronically in the inverter, which means the engine is free to speed up or slow down automatically, depending on the electrical demand.
@Skunked68
@Skunked68 2 жыл бұрын
Excellent video dude!! Your brain is fine tuned 3600 rpm to figure that all out. 20+ years prior home I grew weary of gas only gen, a fussy fuel to keep fresh, carb not gummed. I’m definitely heading in direction of propane now, I’ll subscribe to your channel in case I wish to add natural gas for a more limitless energy supply. Or figure out a larger propane tank system, a couple hundred gallon “mini-pig” would be nice. I’ve pondered hurricanes at 100 mph across hundreds of miles perhaps for days on end, and tropical humidity+heat. Uff da the Norwegian-Americans say. I’m used to northern climate, less broad, more pin pointedness “Russian roulette” of tornadoes, terrible winds lasting 1/2 hour max. I’d be more terrified if 100 mph+ lasted for multiple days!! Of course we get polar vortex brutally cold and very freeze dangerous blizzards that last a day or two. Below zero to 30 below and windchills like 40 below. It’s a very good thing to have emergency power available north or south. Plus I remain concerned about the warnings we’ve heard for years on the vulnerability of our electric grid potentially internet hacked. One would think “the grid” would get completely separate fiber optic control cables buried with nothing to do with any global “internet” for homeland security purposes. Champion seems to be brand I’m buying. Besides clean DC inverter, it shall have wheels and handle. Since no volatile and smelly gas stored in the tank, I can roll it through walk-out basement patio door to utility/storage room. Out of weather and away from mice, not chained against theft. And I’ll put on e-calendar recurring reminders to roll it out about every 2 months to exercise it, to know it will work when called on, very important. I see some folk have located where to buy magnetic dipsticks to grab the little metal bits from the oil. Likely less after fully broke in. Amazon might have one if correct sized, for reasonable. Thanks again for all that great info.

I installed a US Carb tri fuel kit some years ago on an old coleman powermate. It worked well and was a quality product. Fast forward to today and I wanted to replace my old generator. I purchased the Firman Tri Fuel generator. Between the $700 price, and not needing to spend almost $200 on the aftermarket tri-fuel kit, it made sense for me. Yes, the THD is high on the unit, but it's also equipped with a automatic voltage regulator, allowing it to power my house and use sensitive electronics without worrying it will fry them. But you have a great generator there, and nice job with the install of the tri-fuel kit. Hope it works out great for you.

Yeah, I ordered the MSK3101 kit from the US Carb website for the 420cc engine which is what's on the Champion 100520 inverter generator. The kit was super easy to install and it required very little modifications to the generator other than drilling the two holes in the frame to mount the regulator. I'm super happy with my generator so far even though I did downsize from my 100110 model that did have more power. That's okay because I was able to afford to lose some output power in exchange for the cleaner power that these inverter generators provide. I see they are out of stock on Amazon's site which is where I bought mine. Crazy thing is Amazon raised the price by $100 on this generator not 24 hours later after I ordered mine. The RFI is no where near as low as my 1990 Honda EX4500 which does not interfere with my AM radios. This Champion 100520 will not be replacing my EX4500. It will remain a good higher wattage back up.

Ozzie, nice job on the mods and the video. I recently installed an interlock kit and the power inlet box and wiring in my house. I tried it out with my old General GP5500 and it worked fine. I went to the trouble of installing a switch that allows me to choose bonded or floating neutral. I flip to floating for whole house use and if I ever use it as a remote portable unit I’ll flip it back to bonded neutral. The 100520 has a bonded neutral and I like to know if you have modified your to be a floating neutral or if you just plug it in as shipped out of the box?

Thanks for the nice compliment. I don't know if I'd have the patience to build another one mainly because of the amount of work it took me just to build this box. I'm very OCD which means I wanted to make sure both meters were perfectly centered and they lined up with each other just perfectly. This is to say nothing about how much time and effort it took to wire up both male and female ends of the cable connections. I used 8 gauge wire which tends to be kind of difficult to work with once you begin to cut the cables short enough so they fit inside the box while not having excess wire inside the box which was already pretty cramped.

@Ozzie4Para
@Ozzie4Para 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have run the generator on eco mode while using propane. But remember, propane doesn't have the same BTUs as gasoline so the output power of the inverter generator is generally reduced by 20%. But the engine doesn't run at 3600 rpm like a traditional generator. I put a tachometer on mine and it runs anywhere between 3400 and 3590 rpm. Apparently the inverter is the reason why the engine doesn't need to be running at 3600 rpm to produce a steady 120 or 240 power output level(s).

@@Ozzie4Para Ozzie, with no load in ECO, at what RPM does the engine run? I need a 240v gen to run a well pump and sump pump which are both intermittent loads. It would be nice if the engine would really idle down below 3000rpm during the off periods. I know the EU7000is will idle down to around 2500rpm with less than 500watts being drawn, that really helps the fuel consumption and noise level. But agreed, too expensive. Ozzie, I installed a tri-fuel kit on my Champion Inverter generator. I've run it on gasoline, propane, and recently I had an outlet installed so I can run it on natural gas. My tachometer fluctuates between 3360 and 3420 rpms. Occasionally it will hit 3480 before going back to 3360. Is this normal? I have adjusted the load block and this is the best I can get. Is there any other adjustment I can make to get 3600 rpms? Thanks.

@Ozzie4Para
@Ozzie4Para 3 жыл бұрын
The regulator on the tri fuel kit does just that. It needs slight vacuum from the engine to allow the propane to flow. The other regulator on the tank does stop propane from coming through. You wouldn’t want that if the hose were to accidentally burst.

Three questions: does the generator have a low oil automatic cut off switch? Does the generator charge the starting battery? And does the propane conversion affect the warranty?
@Ozzie4Para
@Ozzie4Para 3 жыл бұрын
1) Yes, the engine has a low oil turn off switch. 2) Yes, the generator also charges the battery as needed. 3) That question is sort of irrelevant because the manufacturer wouldn't have any way of knowing about the propane conversion. That's the beauty of the conversion kit. It is fully reversible if need be.
