Thoroughbreds are probably the last horses you’re going to see in the slaughter pipeline. After they’re done racing people buy them and retrain them for other equestrian sports. The upshot of the Ferdinand and Exceller incidents is that now it is common in sales contracts for offshore deals to include a clause that the seller has the right to first refusal should the buyer decide to sell the horse at some point in time in the future. The result is stallions that have been sold offshore are now returning to the US after their foreign breeding careers and typically wind up at Old Friends or other retirement stables.
