Champions & Centurions: Season 1983/1984

In the 1983/1984 season, York City Football Club swept to the Canon League Division 4 title and, in the process, became the first Football League club in history to accrue 100 points in a season.
The team built by Manager, Denis Smith and coach Viv Busby broke several club records in a season never to be forgotten, including most wins (31), most away wins (13), most goals in a league season (96), most doubles (11) and clean sheets (20). York finished a massive 16 points clear up runners-up Doncaster Rovers.
City were never out of the top two and went top on 29th October 1983 and were never again headed. For the second successive season they only lost once at home, winning 18 and drawing 4 of their 23 games at Bootham Crescent.
John Byrne topped the scoring chart, and for the first time since 1955 City had two players who netted over 20 League goals in a season. Clubman of the Year was defender John MacPhail.
The average League attendance was 5,008 and the crowd of 11,297 to see the visit of Doncaster Rovers on 8th April 1984 was the biggest at York for 8 years.
