He and Bobby Labonte's title runs were similar in my book. Just dominate and stayed out of trouble. Love to see one on Bobby because he led the points in 31 of 34 races. A record at the time for most races a driver led the points in a season.
@CJODell125 жыл бұрын
Bobby Labonte also finished every race in 2000, having no DNF's.

Agree. DJ’s 1997 season was a better year. A bullshit black flag in a late race at Watkins Glen cost him a huge number of points and ultimately the championship.

Dale Jarrett was one hell of a driver, if you weren’t Jarrett, chances were you were struggling to even catch him, he drove that 88 with absolute pride, he may not have won more then one championship, but he was one talented man He may be long retired, but I’ll never forget his Ford Credit Union and UPS 88, speeding around the tracks he loved to race on, and his involvement with the sport post retirement

Another fun fact: Dale Jarrett actually had an even higher Top 10 percentage in 1999 than Jeff Gordon did in 1998. Gordon had 28 top 10s in 33 races (84.85%). Jarrett had 29 top 10s in 34 races (85.29%).

I realize many champioship seasons end up with something in the 500. For Green and Jarrett it was a flip and for others like Gordon and Jimmie it was a win.

Winning the 500 back then give the points leader such an advantage....i think if dale sr finished better in the 500 in 2000 he may have given Bobby a better fight
@efan20126 жыл бұрын
What I love about that era was how solidly dominating DJ and Bobby was then. Jeff used his magic up after 1998 and took a 2 year hiatus from the trophy. He wasn't bad or anything but they were both so solid that no matter how much he won those 2 years it wasn't enough. Both their titles were well deserved. Funny story but if you take Jeff out all together Dale woulda been the dominator of the circuit but it woulda had more parity. Martin prob would have been champ in 1998. 1997 see being DJ's. See Terry keeping 1996's trophy though.

Great '99 season for Jarrett. Then, he kicked off the 2000 season with his 3rd Daytona 500 win. I thought '96 was his best season for wins, Daytona 500, Coke 600 and Brickyard 400. Hard to imagine winning those 3 in the same season, and in dominant fashon
@SiVlog19893 жыл бұрын
To me, Robert Yates should have had at least one more title for his team. Davey Allison was leading the points for most of the 1992 season and Erinie Irvan was in the midst of an intense battle with Dale Earnhardt in 1994 before his season ending crash at Michigan
@gadgefan486 жыл бұрын
Oh shit you got the legend UrinatingTree coming up in the next show? Daaaaaaamn that's legit!! DJ's 99 season was just so dominant. They were just so fast and consistent. He was just head above shoulders over the competition over that year.

With 4 wins, Dale Jarrett did not have the most wins in 1999; Bobby Labonte had 5 wins, Jeff Burton had 6 wins, and Jeff Gordon had 7 wins. But DJ won out on sheer consistency, with 24 top five finishes, 29 top ten finishes, and a 6.76 average finish.

"You guys are the shit!"- Todd Parrott on the radio to Dale Jarrett as he coasted to the line on fumes during the 99 Pepsi 400. They surely were. While 1997 was the dominating year, 1999 was Mr. Consistency, a lost art in championship winning. 1995 is probably about as snake bit as any one season DJ could ever have. He was involved in odd crashes and mechanical failures also sidelined him. 1999 was the fourth of 6 straight years Dale would finish top 5 in the points. Only Jimmie Johnson in the modern era could meet and exceed that feat.

Black Flags Matter? What do you think of the TV coverage today compared to 1999? I love the split screen during commercials but I have a complaint about the camera work. What has happened to the continuous wide angle shots where 15 - 20 cars are visible all the way around the track? I used to watch Dale Jarrett passing cars up through the pack because of the continuous wide angle shot. Today the camera zooms in on 2-4 cars and tries to hype the speed as a visual rush. I think fans want to watch their fav driver and when they start 15th they don't get to see them much. Also, the actual racing a driver does is a 10 second setup and then pass. Sometimes we see the pass but never the setup. Nascar and the celbrity anouncers understand the fans but the cameramen don't get it. This poor camera work has made me disinterested in watching a whole race on TV. I think the fall off in ratings is because of this change in camera work. What say you?

This season was a key that led to changes in how points were allocated. Jarrett had practically won the championship with 4 races still to go because he had built up so many points. Also, he won most of those points with top 5 finishes and not race wins. The New points system puts more emphasis on wins but still allows points to add up as a qualifier for a final "Chase" to the championship. Fans love the new format because it keeps hope alive until the last race of the season.
@aeromedical67502 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but I have to disagree. A championship year should be a measure of consistency. Being able to get in the “championship race” on the basis of one win is stupid. NASCAR was a better product and had a better following than before the powers that be tinkered with it and screwed it up for everyone.
