Last-minute replacements are allowed in every combat sport in existence. And there is no doubt that Frank the Tank as a qualified contender, and with each camp in agreement, along with the blessing of the commission, this match was made both ethically and legally. No one sets up fights here. These two slapped the piss out of each other. As real as it gets.

I understand that he was a last minute substitution but isn't 271 above the heavyweight limit? I thought 265+ was a different division. How is Frank the Tank eligible for the title? Don't get me wrong, I like the guy he's a workhorse and he doesn't complain. He's certainly good for the promotion. I'm just a little confused because of his announced weight.

Yes, 271 pounds is above the limit for heavyweight fighters, however, the commission allowed this fight to happen on 10 minutes notice, considering that the fighters were within 7 pounds of each other. That is allowed according to the Sanctioning regulations. If Frank had not stepped up to compete, Young James would have been without an opponent, so he and his coaches were more than happy to accept this fight. It is also important to consider that the weigh in for all fighters on the card had taken place the evening before the event, so Young James was likely much larger than 264 pounds as well.

Yes, you make a good point that since the weigh-ins occur far enough ahead that a fighter can rehydrate and gain weight Young James was very likely in the 270+ range as well. So Frank stepping up without prep time is a serious disadvantage without too much impact from a few extra pounds. I was just unsure if titles were allowed to be put up for overweight fighters by rule given the definition of the divisions. Always good to learn something. Either way, Frank stepping up to keep this fight alive when Bubbles couldn't go is a classy move, good to see him get rewarded.
