True... Love Chance, and a lot of other rappers like J Cole and Kendrick, Kanye or Gambino, but the hip hop industry has been so whack. I work with a guy who refuses to use any real instruments or really push himself because "it's not what __ does." Or "That's not really something you do in hip hop." I love hip hop because it's poetry. Most other genres the lyrics are cryptic and often more about melody than lyric. In hip hop, you can say anything. No cryptic messages, nothing. Atmosphere does a great job of mixing his musicianship and poetry for example. Guys like Chance are popular because they've dared to step out. Smaller artists see that and rather than getting the point they say, "here's a new formula." They proceed to write about money or gangs or things they think people want to hear and continue beating a dead horse. Originality is definitely missing in hip hop anymore.
