Throw in Grand Master Skywalker and the OG Jedi Praxeum (not the BS one from the movies, but a more optimistic sort of Jedi Hogwarts) and boom everybody wins. Hmmm... You must not know your ancient history. The idea of a strong, unified leader, chosen to be dictator for an emergency, dates at minimum to the Roman Republic; during times of peace they operated by senatorial decree, but selected a single ruler to lead during times of war. The very last selected dictator of Rome? Yea, a slightly famous guy named Julius Caesar. Oddly enough, the system worked quite well for hundreds of years, individual rulers whose powers were far reaching actually returning those powers to the central system repeatedly.

@@wingy200 What if we do? That's not really a comment directly related to the topic at hand and I would consider it to be something entirely different. We could have a movie, or a set of movies, or even a series about him alone and then Palpatine could be introduced later on and show his interactions with Plagueis. If he wasn't there at the beginning, it's not exactly a story about Palpatine. If you wanted it from Palpatine's perspective, you'd have to begin with him as a child and finding Darth Plagueis and getting training and he'd have to be the main character. You could theoretically make a Plagueis movie/series that leads into a Palpatine movie/series if you wanted to go that route, but it wouldn't include Palpatine's full story because most of it has already been told in the existing movies.

I love Episode I for one of the reasons other people hate it - the political intrigue. I love watching Palpatine's subtle machinations as he carries out his 30 plan to subvert the Republic. Like Anakin, we were supposed to know who he was going to become and be afraid as he gathered more and more power.

I see absolutely no legitimate reason to dislike the prequals. I think the issue was people who had the back story pictured in their heads for so long, from 1984 to 1999, and then it didn't match up with their own picture of it. That doesn't detract anything from the story of them though. I feel strongly George's vision makes those six movies, certainly among the greatest stories, period, not just movies, of all time. The recent three, excluding Rogue One, that's sadly a different story. . . .

Watching this in 2021 hits even harder, i'm not american, but frankly, i think the democrats in the US have launched a coup using that Trumper riot in Washington, because, with all the censoring of apps used by Trump supporters and the calls for more censorship of the internet, the whole "you canot question the results of the 2021 elections", while the 2016 were constantly questioned for these past 4 years, the whole deployment of troops in washington for the Biden inauguration, the whole narrative about the capitol riots being somekind of treasonous sedition act and etc. It all reminds me of my country in the 1930s, where a failed commie revolution was used as a pretext to shut down democracy and give the transitional government complete power over the nation "until the situation stabilizes and the threat of a comunist coup is over", which took about 15 years.

@@theemperor1379 The politics, while interesting, were jarring to fans who expected something mythical like the OT. That's why people hated them when they were released (the bad acting didn't help either). Politics in stories like this aren't necessarily a death toll for any series (look at GoT), but the way they're presented can rub people the wrong way. It should've eased audiences into the politics, grounding them in the familiar, mythical setting before discussing taxation and trade blockades. Can't say the same for Canto Bight. Remove that side quest and nothing of consequence would change. It was a spectacular waste of time, for it didn't present anything interesting for the characters to do (granted, the characters weren't interesting to begin with, but I digress). The war profiteering angle didn't inform the rest of the film or trilogy. It would've served a purpose if one of the characters turned their back on the war effort, but instead everything went back to the status quo.

And this is one of the reasons why I love Star Wars prequels. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was the Empire. It took Palpatine years of planning, scheming, infiltrating and manipulating to achieve control of the galaxy. He was the master puppeteer and his journey to the top was believable, mirroring some events of our own history. That is far more satisfying than crushing all enemies in seconds using some lame Deus ex Machina. Sadly this is exactly what the First Order in the sequels have done. The New Republic was wiped out in seconds. Really? They had no other military bases or anything on other planets? It should have most of the assets of the fallen empire! It would have been far more interesting to see a major conflict between the New Republic and The First Order, instead of seeing R̶e̶b̶e̶l̶s̶ Resistance again... I could also mention how Luke had to train a lot and endure failure along the way, while Rey just seems to win at everything and has no flaws, nor requires any training in anything... Buuut plenty of people have already covered that. IMO the only good Star Wars film to come out of Disney so far has been Rogue One.

That`s exactly what I`m talking about. It took many efforts for Palpatine and his master Darth Plagueis (Hego Damask). I mean if you just imagine, that everything was planned from the beginning it`s just impressive that Palpatine succeeded. He was able to deceive an entire galaxy, the whole Senat and even the Jedi Council including the most powerful Jedi, like grand master Yoda. All the years of planning, scheming, infiltrating and manipulating you mentioned, these years aren`t shown that much in the movies. If you just watch the movies, Palpatine is shown just as the villain, but without any background information about him, you won`t have any clue how many efforts Palpatine had to deal with. It`s a pity the films don`t show it better. But when the Prequals were released George Lucas wanted Palpatine to appear myteriously. All in all Palpatine is a tactical genius and it`s impressive how he invaded the Republic that cleverly.

So say we all! George Lucas gave us a fantastic meaningful, deep, gripping and moral story over his saga. Episodes 1 to 6 were sheer brilliance and a timeless classic. IF ONLY WE HAD SEEN HIS SEQUELS. It is truly sad that he LEFT THEM his scripts and story treatments for a final 3 episodes, that Mark Hamil etc seemed to love. If they had produced those, I am confident that we would have had ONE STORY that was cohesive, ONE SAGA, PROPER CHARACTERS, AN ACTUAL PLOT and meaning to the galaxy and the Force. It sounds like he was going to tell the tale of "Pass on what you have learned" that Yoda gave to Luke. Of Luke up against a hidden dark sider (probably Plageuis who was seeded into ROTS) and the Whills (super beings in the Force and the whole midichlorian thing explained) over the path to immortality and the Force itself (with the help of his father force ghost). In addition a completely fractured galaxy post Endor, with the Alliance (under Princess Leia and Han) uniting with the Imperial Remnant on Coruscant to defeat multiple warlords, criminal gangs etc to reform a galactic wide orderly New Republic by saga's end. Instead we have an unholy mess with TFA never being a real Episode 7. It's opening crawl destroyed the entire premise of the saga. There was no continuation. No exposition. No logic, or sense, no story. No characters (old, or new as Lucas intended and wanted). No actual plot at all. What a waste. And oh what could have been. Nothing makes sense post ROTJ, since TFA does not continue onward from it, or Episodes 1 to 6 as a whole. What happened to the orderly Empire, the Alliance, the "Return" of the Jedi, the galaxy? Who the hell is everyone? Where the hell is everyone for starters? Who the hell are these random new characters, especially the rude person who tells people to stop holding their hand and why are we focusing on them, versus the galaxy, or some type of plot and the family saga? Who is the villain and how the hell are they in charge? It makes no sense to have a random villain with no backstory suddenly miraculously in charge. It would have been like Episode 2, or Episode 5 having Grand Supremo Stupido or Silly the Hutt in charge without any explanation after the respective preceding episode. The sheer brilliance of both Palpatine's planning and brilliant rise to power legally, the struggles of the Jedi to defeat him are all thrown out the window and made ridiculous against instant unexplained takeovers before TFA even starts. And to top it off to have a New Republic at inception already (not what Lucas intended) to only destroy it with a ridiculous weapon not even part of the plot is terrible storytelling. Compare the emotions of Alderaan by the Death Star (which was actually part of the plot, and not shoehorned in), or Naboo's invasion, or Order 66 - people and planets we connect with versus random planet. We have no Kira, or Jedi students Lucas envisaged. No Luke, Han, Leia, no villains who make sense. No plot. Rey is rude, rough, coarse and irritating. Doesn't belong in any Star Wars story, let alone the saga itself. I fully CONCUR that ROGUE ONE (and all its characters) were the only good film so far post the George Lucas era. That actually had a story, fit into the universe (and ironically into the saga unite the so called sequels in name only), and had wonderful characters and WORLD BUILDING. If only the people doing that film had done the sequels producing George's actual scripts. Oh what might have been.

Wow, I`m speechless. I recognized the passion you`ve put into this text just when I had read it the first time. I know, it took a while to accustom to the Sequals, but I accepted them. Imagine: There has been many sceptics of the Prequals when they were released. Now they are a part you can`t take away from the franchise anymore. Perhaps Disney can save the new trilogy with the last film, so that everything makes finally sense. It just needs time. The only thing, that annoys me: Instead of the Original Trilogy or the Prequals the identity of the actual villain is uncertain yet. It would be a shame if the producers just introduce a random villain without any background information (like Snoke). This villain would never reach the level Palpatine had. It`s as you said. But unfortunately Star Wars isn`t produced for a view fans, Star Wars is produced for wide masses of people, who even don`t have to know the other films to understand the new films. It is a industry for masses, not for experts or nerds. That`s the sad truth.

Well Anakin/Darth Vader was suppose to be Hitler, and Palpatine was suppose to be symbolic of Hitler’s Rise, or more so his Propaganda Machine. Hitler started out trying to free Germany and help them (Anakin’s intentions) but as he rose, he was made Chancellor (Vice President) of Germany, until the President died in 1934, making Hitler the leader. As Hitler obtains his power, he ends up killing Democracy with a Dictatorship through his 3rd Reich (3rd Empire/Rule) for Germany. Hence the small amounts of Symbolism and Similarity between the Empire and the 3rd Reich/Nazi Germany.

The special order series were emergency directives covering a broad range of senarios. Of particular note in this case are orders 65 and 66. 65 is in event the chancellor commits treason, removes him from office by any means necessary and places the capitol under martial law until a replacement can be voted in. 66 is in event the jedi commit treason, removes them from command by any means necessary and hold the line until replacement officers arrive. Mace Windu should have read the GAR's owners manual XD

For those who dislike the prequels, I would suggest to stop viewing them as Anakin Skywalker movies or Jedi movies. I would recommend watching them through the lense that they are Sheev Palpatine's movies full of his manipulations, patience, and game of chess to make the Republic kneel. Even if you don't see him that often, I think of him as the focus point and "main character" of the prequel trilogy, and every other character is just Pawn #1, Pawn #2, Pawn # 3, etc.

film making is a race, films are created by the time they are made in, the phantam menace feels like the most excellent part of hte nineties because those actors and the flim crew did it all in the nineties and released it in 99, they were living that era, the clone wars is the entry into hte millinium, and the revenge of the sithe is once the war in iraq has started, a film reflects its era of inspiration as much as its era of creation, the cast and crew are a living emodiment, and you simply sometimes have to roll the dice or your film will not get made, tahts why great films sometimes dont appear as great as they could be, because film making and writing is always a race, life is a race of plotting and creating

why is it you assume that? lucas haas always been open enough about who provides what lines in the films, he even has a documentary for the creation of the prequels, whats more likely, is something you will probably hate, that george lucas has been writing scripts and releasing them to other studios and writers to actually come up with the movie, he may even be a undocumented director or film scene supervisor for a few films, he does have the full schooling and classical training, but what is extremely like to have occured is that he has written film bare bone scripts, probably not to much dialogue, but scenes and filming angle suggestions, and general ideas for characters, in fact for all you know he wrote the basic ideas for "Predator" and gave it to someone else, and that is why FOX, the studio Lucas uses got to produce it and basically own/distrubute the Predator Franchise, as a sort of test and to give something to help everyone out, it was produced some years after Return of hte Jedi, and i could see a certain link between both films, and Predator is extremely well designed visually, and it has a more earth like dark gritty yet bright atmosphere, just like a George Lucas film, he always uses bright lighting so people can see the scenes character, plus thiers some very clever special effects used, all hall marks of a George Lucas film, and it came out in 1987, 4 years after he was done with the majority of his films

It is sad that this continues to be a franchise for the kids, despite the possibilities for much more dark, contemplative and adult complexity. I am not completely sure that the newer movies are much worse than those movies i loved as a kid in the 1980´s. Its just that people grow up and it is much more profitable to continue to aim for the younger audience. Its all really about what makes economical sense.

My favorite part of Palpatine's story is how, if you take out him starting and directly controlling the Clone Wars, he doesn't do anything particularly harsh in the prequels. He performed some political maneuvering and consolidated power. He recognizes that the Republic is failing and uses that. From the outside, it seems like a natural progression towards authoritarianism.
@Anglomachian
@Anglomachian 7 жыл бұрын
The sad contradiction within the Star Wars universe is that the Sith were, to an extent, correct. The Republic as a galactic government was unsustainable. It tried to be a centralised form of control whilst being open to the multitude of varying opinions of differing species all holding different values. In order to work, the Republic would essentially have to lessen its central power, and become little more than a delegating power between factions within the galaxy. Or, it would have to cnetralise completely, focus on one single form of rule at one time, filtering other points of view through that form of rule. Hence the Empire. The only real problem with the Empire is that it creates a system where ultimate power is vested in one, and formidable power vested in the few. And in a system like that corruption will run rampant. And it's not that power corrupts, because it doesn't. But it is an amplifier. It will take what little corruption might exist and give it full vent to grow and stagnate. To some people power is a burden rather than a vice. The whole issue of galactic government in Star Wars makes me happy, because it shows that there are problems that even the "good guys" have with their methods of ruling. In others franchises, to use Star Trek for example, the principle government is shown to be essentially unflawed. The only problems the Federation ever seems to have is that their admirals are a bunch of cunts, and the people living on the fringes don't have it as great as the people living closer to the centre. It's utopian and unrealistic, but really that's kind of the point in Star Trek. it's an idealised future, rather than a reflection of reality.
@iainhowe4561
@iainhowe4561 6 жыл бұрын
The Federation suffers from the same problem that Iain M. Banks' "The Culture" does. Both aspire to creating the perfect, utopian, society but both exist in a universe populated by threats. In both cases the illusion of Utopia is maintained by having very ethical morale standards in public and imbuing a minority of people with the job of getting their hands dirty, protecting their perfect society from the dangers. Both the militaristic part of Star Fleet and The Culture's Special Circumstances division wind up with the same problem - repudiation and punishment by a society that only exists because of the crimes that patriots are willing to commit in it's name.
