A ghazal is never by a singer, it is always by the poet. It is only ever sung by the singer. The ghazal must always belong to the poet.

These matters are beyond the comprehension of someone who has yet to learn the conventions around upper case and lower case. Things to do with tehzeeb won’t prove comprehensible to bud-tehzeeb people.

@@pratyushtripathi8238 It’s a fine point. A ghazal is, by definition, a piece of poetry. It always belongs to the poet. A dozen different singers may sing it in the same age and a hundred more might do over the coming years. There is a reason that we say it’s Ghalib’s ghazal or Zauq’s or Iqbal’s or Faiz or Faraz or Gulzar’s. It doesn’t become Noor Jahan’s or Mehdi Hassan’s or Jagjit’s. This is not to take away credit from the singer, one can say that the singer sang Ghalib’s ghazal beautifully. But we cannot just take the ghazal from Ghalib and give it to a singer. A ghazal is one of the most enchanting genres of poetry. Every couplet is complete in itself and doesn’t need the other couplets in the ghazal to complement it, while the radeef and qafiya of the ghazal help string together myriad beautiful couplets. Unfortunately, people think of ghazal first not as a piece of poetry but as a convenient prop for a singer. It’s the other way round. The ghazal is the real deal. The singing only a vehicle to relay its beauty. That is why a ghazal always belongs to the poet.
