Yes, she is a fictional character but Nand Nandini isn't. There was a daughter of Dhana Nanda whose name is not mentioned but she is called Nanda Nandini in ParishistParvan. This girl fell in love with him but he rejected her. Chanakya made them marry each other. Durdhara indeed was his childhood friend and daughter of his eldest maternal uncle.

Real History of Chandragupta and Nand Nandini- The real story of Nand Nandini is found in ParishistParvan. Its a book written by Hemachandra in 12 th century CE. Nanda's daughter is referred as Nand Duhita, Nand Nandini and Raj Kanya. When Nanda was defeated by Chandragupta, Nanda beseech for forgiveness. Chanakya took pity on him and allowed to leave with items which his one chariot could hold. He took two wives, a daughter and treasure and left. On the road they met Chandragupta. Nand Nandini fell in love with Chandragupta at first sight as he was handsome. Hed eyes were filled with attachment and she stared at him with desirous eyes (something which was shown by Roopa in this show as the makers wanted to show Nandini Mahan). Nanda watching her desires allowed her to choose him as her husband as Princesses had chosen their husbands in Swayamwars before. Nand Nandini got down from chariot. Nanda tearfully said goodbye to her and blessed her for her new life ans also surrendered his treasure. But when she reached Chandragupta's chariot he was surprised. She was started climbing his chariot but in the process it broke. Chandragupta got highly angry and insulted her by calling her inauspicious and rebuked her for choosing him as her husband. She got shocked at this and abandoned her love for him. He also decided to leave her on the road. But Chanakya intervened and made him marry her as he called her auspicious for his dynasty and he should take pity on her as she left her family for him. He then accepted her as his wife but due to constant attacks by Nanda's followers their relationship remained strained. He later married Durdhara, his childhood friend who belonged from hia own lineage. She was a commoner but was made his chief queen. This made Nand Nandini angry but now she remained silent as she saw Durdhara was very dear to Chandragupta and she wasn't favoured by him. Death of Durdhara made Chandragupta melancholic and sad and he got more diatant from Nand Nandini. He got married many times but his last wife was Helena, daughter of Seleucus Nicator whose youth and beauty again made him happy and he fell in love. Unlike what this show later will show, Chandragupta loved Helena very much and he also had children with her. Also Helena wasn't blonde. Seleucus was black haired Macedon and his wife Apama was persian. Their daughter Helena was very beautiful, in fact so beautiful even monks would leave their vows just seeing her. Her beauty was intoxicating.
