the only reason why sadness became aggressive at the rising of actions is because joy is supressing her. Riley needed sadness after she was disappointed on the new house, but Joy prevented sadness to take control the icons because "riley needs to be happy all the time." Toxic joy, glad she learned her lessons tho

As someone who has dealt with depression his whole life, its kind of amazing how accurate Inside out depicts it. Most people think depression is when sadness consumes your life, but its not. Depression is when you struggle to feel any emotions at all, no matter whats happening around you.

Depression isn't no emotions. When a bad thing happens to someone, they have a reason to be sad. Depression is beyond being sad, and it happens for no reason.
@amberanime
@amberanime 29 күн бұрын
@@Amused_Comfort_Inc One can debate if it happens for no reason however. A lot of people with depression tend to be stuck in some kind of scenario that isnt right for them. A job they hate. A life that isnt fulfilling to them. Financial troubles. A bad relationship (doesnt need to be abusive. it can look happy, but if your not in love anymore no matter how kind the other person is that is fuel for depression). When you dig deeper with people with depression you usualy find something that either triggerd it or is fueling it. A lot of people are miserable in the typical rat race life where you spend most of your daytime hours working to earn money to pay bills that are to expensive for what you get in return. Most people struggle to get by, never mind have enough FREE time and resources to do what makes them happy. Depression is rarely without reason. The reason just isnt always obvious and in your face. You can have a good job, a good marriage, no money problems, and still be unhappy with your life because this type of life just isnt the kind that makes you happy. But you think it should because people keep telling you it should. And so you think your despressed or unhappy without good reason. But people are wrong. The work/family life isnt fulfilling for everyone. And wage slavery is destructive on a psychological level for most humans. Depression is not for no reason. It is always a symptom of another problem. Almost every mental health issue is.

@@Amused_Comfort_IncI think depression can be both. It can either be a deep pit of sadness (and/or fear) where only pain and sorrow lie, usually brought on by negative events in life. Or it can be a dull grey void where no emotions can be felt and there's just a numbness in the soul while all ambitions and desires simply fail to exisit, which can happen randomly out of nowhere and can just a few hours or can last days or weeks or even more.

@@Amused_Comfort_Inc Depression, as most of mental disorders doesn't have a strict pattern of action, but many different ways to manifest depending on the person. Normally is not about being totally sad or numb of emotions, at least at the beggining, but a gradual lost of feeling pleasure in things, any type of things. This will start to affect your humor and consequently your life, your levels of serotonin start to get really low
@SoulessStranger

Depression is seeing the world being a colour grey. It is not feeling any joy or reward for doing anything. No matter if you lay a whole day on a couch and stare at a wall or you're outside in the nature, it feels the same. There is anger and frustration that constantly tippy toe behind you and kick your heels whenever you start to feel something else than empty. Depression is having a barbed wire tied around your chest that keeps squeezing you tightly while a voice screams into your ears and tells you that nothing you have ever done or will do matters. That the world would be better without you in it. Depression is looking at the world through glasses that let you see all your memories as twisted and you cannot remember about them anything else than, that every moment in your life felt flat and grey and pointless. Depression is like walking with a concrete slab tied to your legs and trying to not trip, to not look beat down and tired all the time in front of the other people. Depression is painting a smile on your face very morning so that you stop hearing: why are you so down today? You don't have a reason to be sad. Just think of something happy. There are people out there that have a REAL reason to be sad. Depression is sitting down and planning how you will clean your place and life so that the people around you don't have any worries for when you are gone and not realizing their biggest worry IS that you will be gone one day. Depression is having a brain that is broken but 90% of the world outside expects you to function normal. Depression is not leaving this world out of sadness, it is leaving this world because you are dead tired and it feels like it is the only way how one can get finally some peace.

I love the message that parents shouldn't put pressure on their kids to be happy all the time too. It's so important. Riley's mum telling her that she's the one who's kept them all going since the move because shes always happy puts so much pressure on Riley to hide how she's really feeling and that's partly why she ends up in the state she does.
@miss__e
@miss__e Ай бұрын
Something I really found interesting about this is that Joy is the leading emotion in Riley's head, whereas in her mum's head it's Sadness leading, and in her dad's it's Anger. Really helps explain why some people seem to just be naturally happy all the time, and some are more prone to depression or hot-headedness. One of my favourite movies!
@tmm4195
@tmm4195 Ай бұрын
I think for the parents like the mom leading with Sadness has more to do with her empathy and the father having anger lead is because he's the protector of the family. Not really depression because Sadness and depression are not the same. Depression is more when you lack emotions kind of like how Riley was going numb without Joy and Sadness.
@angiebangie6372
@angiebangie6372 Ай бұрын
i think it also relates to the socializations of each genders. men are more prone to stifling emotions and expressing most of them as anger (especially emotions like fear and sadness). women, on the other hand, aren’t socialized that way. they’re allowed to be sad and emotionally expressive; plus it also could be because of women historically getting the short stick in general, like maybe feeling as if they’re constantly taking on the brunt of domestic labor for example can lead to sadness building up power gradually. idk, i just feel like those choices do have a good gender theory going on.

I actually liked Joy least, because she's so egocentric. She's so threatened by a sad core memory that she simply decides that it has to be destroyed. She considered herself more important than the other emotions and pretty much disregards Sadness. So glad she learned eventually that Sadness is just as important. As for the question "did Pixar work with actual psychologists on this?", the answer is yes. They worked very intensively together to make the whole movie suitable to teach kids about depression and the movie is often used to help talk about emotions. The second movie is even better, because in puberty new emotions come in play: Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarressment. The story deals with stuff like suppressing emotions, so I definitely recommend reacting to it when it becomes available after the theatres runtime.

I'm a child psychologist in Brasil and I'm telling you this movie is INCREDIBLE to work with children! There's a whole discussion about theories and representations, but using an animation movie (that kids already love) to work with them about their emotions is truly a blessing. You can actually SHOW them some emotions, talk about it while actually watching some clips. It's truly amazing and I'm so glad this film exists because it makes my job somehow easier and waaaay more fun! Actually, the other day one of my little patients asked their mom to take a picture of them in front of a Inside Out 2 poster just to tell me they were about to watch the second movie and were excited to talk about it with me. So, on a psychological level, sadness and happiness are very closely tied together. They're essentially our brain's way of communicating what is important to us - happiness by its presence, and sadness by its absence. A big part of the reason sadness is so powerful in this movie is because... all of the things that made Riley happy are now stripped away and left behind in Minnesota. They did a lot right when it comes to this movie, and I'm definitely interested to see Inside Out 2!

That Bingbong moment always gets to me! Had to pause cz I had to cry for Bingbong's sacrifice. I interpret that scene as the death of being a 'child', which is so relatable. There'd be days that I still cry for my younger self and... (Ugh, the comment section isn't a therapist, my god!)

The moments when you fricken predict what's going to happen in your reactions?! I LOVE it. 🤣🤣💖💖"What happens if Joy gets locked up?" "What happens when two emotions combine together and you're like happy and sad at the same time?" Way to super unintentionally predict the movie!

I watched Inside Out in the theater with my grandparents. I was 11 (the same age as Riley) at the time. My grandma suddenly passed away about 8 months after that, and my grandpa passed away just over three years ago now. For me, Inside Out is one of those core memories that started out happy but is now bittersweet. That day was such a great day and I love the movie, but thinking about it reminds me that my grandparents aren't here anymore and that I don't get to have those kinds of experiences anymore

My daughter has a lot of mental health challenges and we have used this movie for years to represent emotions and discuss things with her in a way that she could grasp. We still use language from this movie probably weekly! Both films are amazing for showcasing these complex abstract concepts in a way kids can understand.

41:18 @CinemaTherapyShow did a really good analysis on Inside out. It is really interesting the way they portray sadness as the "bad guy" at first because that is what we first think of sadness in real life too. And then once we get older and understand emotions more we understand that sadness isn´t necessarily a bad thing to feel, but can be increadibly healing as well. Thank you for this reaction☺

One of the things I find fascinating about this movie is the difference between Riley’s headquarters and the glimpses we see inside the headquarters of adults and some other characters. Most people’s emotions that we see are uniform and basically look the same as each other, that is they all look like the person. Riley, however, has emotions that all appear different, and none of them look like she does. I see two possible explanations for this. 1. As people’s personalities solidify, the headquarters becomes more uniform and takes on the aspect of the person. Most of the people we see into are either adults or possibly have stronger senses of self (the boy and the “cool girl”), so it may be that Riley hasn’t yet fully solidified her personality yet. Or, 2. It’s possible that Riley is neurodivergent in some way, potentially on the autism spectrum, and this manifests her emotions in a more complex/less uniform manner. Instead of working together, they tend to fight against each other and have different aims. I also find it interesting how the “lead” emotion of the other people is different in each one, and how it manifests in their personalities. Mom, for example, has sadness in the center position, but she’s clearly not unhappy in her life. Instead, we see how sadness can manifest in a mature adult, evolving into empathy. Throughout the movie, we see mom constantly checking in with Riley and trying to get a feed on where she’s at emotionally. She’s very in tune with the feelings of others and works to help them achieve what they need to do. Dad, on the other hand, has anger in the center position, but he doesn’t manifest as an angry or violent individual. Instead we see the positive, mature side of what anger can do, which is passion and drive. Joy even says it spin the introduction, anger cares, very deeply, about things. Dad is a very driven individual, he takes the opportunity to improve his family’s life through his business ventures, and has the drive to see things through even when it gets difficult. He’s a staunch supporter of his family’s individual interests and wants what is best for them, and isn’t hesitant to do what it takes to accomplish that. I don’t know what fear or disgust in the driver’s seat would be like in a mature form, and I suspect they might be more along the lines of supporting emotions than driving forces, but I could see disgust manifesting as creativity or charisma and fear manifesting as protectiveness or ingenuity. There’s so much you can delve into psychologically with this movie, and I truly believe it to be one of Pixar’s best films, and probably it’s most important one as well.

The creators of the movie had extensive help from actual therapists and psychologists for getting the inner workings right. Also the visualisation is great. Did you notice, for example, that the memory part with its twisted paths and high shelves looks like the actual surface of the brain? It's a movie that you need to watch multiple times to really get it.

Riley's dad is voiced by Kyle MacLachlan who also played Paul Atredies in the 1984 Dune and Lucy's dad, Hank MacLean, in the Fallout series. edit: also, Sadness is voiced by Phyllis (character and actress' name) from The Office, Disgust is voiced by Mindy Kaling who also plays Kelly on The Office, and Fear is voiced by Bill Hader in this movie, but him and Mindy both do not reprise their roles in Inside Out 2.

Opposite feelings are required to elevate eachother but the issue is finding that balance. When a person is sad 24/7 they become numb to the feeling because it’s the norm. When a person is happy 24/7 they lose the ability to empathize with others. In a fucked up way I could imagine having no sadness or not being able to understand it leading to something sad happening in your life but you, containing no sadness or understanding of the emotion, can only seem to laugh or smile through it and it coming off as concerning or borderline psychotic to others. But when you have a balance of happiness and sadness you learn appreciation and gratitude. When you’ve been sad, you understand what it means to be happy more because you know what it’s like to not be happy. On top of that you learn to appreciate and be grateful for the things or people that help you get out of the sadness. Being sad might not be the greatest thing ever but without it you’ll never feel as good as you could, you’ll never understand your feelings to the fullest, and you lose the ability to connect with others. All the same goes for the feeling of happiness too because they need each other to be the best version of themselves.

I just saw Inside Out 2 and you were spot on with some predictions. The main new character is Anxiety and as someone with anxiety, they do SUCH A GOOD JOB depitcing it. I would love to see other more complex emotions/conditions explained. And yes, at least at the end of the second one, I saw that they had 3 doctors credited and even through the movie it was very clear that they had psychologists on board since the anxiety was very textbook, but explained well.

Psychologist here. Yes, this movie is based on Paul Ekman's Neurocultural theory of emotions. Paul Ekman himself was the cusultant for this movie. Although a few aspects are exagerated or we don't quite know for sure how it trully works inside the brain, this movie is a good representation of how basic emotions works and how memories are conected with them. It's for sure one of the best if not the best disney movie for sure.

yes .. sadness is necessary .. if theres one thing i took out from one therapy session is that all kinds of emotion is valid and we have to be able to allow ourselves to feel it so we can let it go and move on with life .. telling someone to always be happy and smile (like riley's mom did in the beginning) is actually very toxic .. we need to normalize expressing our feelings ..

They do a great job on showing how sadness works irl. Being too sad to do anything seems exaggerated, but it's not. Your body can get in total passive (dorsal state) mode when sadness (or depression) takes over or when you're feeling overwhelmed. And also... they show the layers of emotions. If you suppress sadness, your primary reaction to situations will be anger (or sarcasm, which is actually passive aggressive). So... give space to every emotion you feel. Not dwell in it, but feeling it. Sadness also shows what compassion is. Letting Bingbong talk and cry. That is co-regulation. Helping someone else feeling their emotions. Sometimes we need another person for that, so we feel that we're not alone. I love this movie so much ❤

All emotions are necessary, they're part of what helps us fully experience life, make sense of it, and grow. Denying any one of them is often the suppression that can lead to or exacerbate emotional, mental health and development issues. Learning to understand and feel and appreciate them all in a healthy way is one of the way we mature emotionally.

So, at the end, you said you'd like to see a licensed psychologist react to this movie. Well, there's a KZbin channel called Cinema Therapy which is exactly that. A professional film maker and a licensed therapist who watch movies together and talk about the psychology of them. They did in fact do one on Inside Out, and they have a half review of Inside Out 2 where they got to watch the movie with the directors and reviewed the first 20 minutes. They'll definitely make a full review on it when the movie comes outside of theaters.

First time I watched Inside Out, I thought Joy was kind of annoying because of how controlling she was and I understood Sadness. Watching it again, I realized the reason why Joy was so in control was because of her parents. From the scene where the mom tells Riley to keep smiling and be the happy Riley that she always was, it made Joy this more controlling personality that kind of forced Riley to try to avoid being sad and to always be happy.
