That's cool to see that this a learnable thing. I love the way you relate all this. "... is interesting." And all of it is. I've had tinnitus for as long as I can remember Since I was quite young, at least. I had an undiagnosed and untreated ear infection for about 3 months shortly after birth and I've always suspected that was the cause. With the exception of when I drank too much and got hung over, my tinnitus has never bothered me. I like your refrigerator analogy. That's exactly what it's like for me. It's always there, but I never notice it unless I see or hear the word or something else triggers me to think about it and then it's there as clear as day. It's there right now, of course. But as soon as I'm off to the next thing, it'll fade away, usually within seconds. I have a fantastic relationship with my tinnitus. I've used it as a singular thing to focus on when I meditate. I use it to help me sleep at night (just focusing on it. It's like a million crickets outside). I can see how retraining your response could really help. It's basically cognitive behavioral therapy for tinnitus. CBT rescued me from panic attacks. It's cool stuff.
