I believe the exits now correspond with the mile markers like the rest of the States (except New York). Before it was exit 1 then 2 then 3 then 4 and so on, didn't matter what mile maker you where at.

New Hampshire is a sequential hold-out. Vermont does sequential but added signs at each exit that say "Milepost Exit" and whatever the mileage-based exit would be.

The federal government mandated that the exit numbers needed to match the mile markers on all interstates in the USA. The states were given a deadline. New England waited till last year to get this done. I live in Rhode Island and got to see the whole process. Love watching you!

As one who lives in MA the process of changing exit numbers has been an ongoing, expensive. process. It was over ten years ago when the federal government ordered MA to change the exit numbers to correspond with the mile markers. If they refused the feds would no longer send them federal highway money to repair roads. The state fought this until finally they gave up and started the process about five years finally finishing it last year. The process involved not one, not two, but three sign changes. The first time the signs didn't adhere to the federal standards. The second time they messed up the exit numbers. There was a problem with interstates changing numbers such as I290 turning into I395. Each of these roads had the same mile markers. And you ay have noticed some of our roads travel in two different directions. The third time they finally got them all correct, well almost.
@grtjimmy06

They were changed because the federal government forced them to. All exit signs are to be mile based versus sequential so its easy to figure out how far it is to your exit. Most of the US and Canada use a similar system. Karen is probably wrong because its a Rand McNally GPS and Rand McNally maps themselves are usually notoriously out of date and riddled with errors...probably the same reason you got messed up in Indianapolis.

Maine used to be a part of Massachusetts. Although it started as a separate colony in the 1620s, from the 1650s until 1820 Maine was a part of Massachusetts. After the Revolution, people living in Maine began a 35-year campaign for statehood.

Hi Josh, I'm from Massachusetts. To answer your question about the exists a couple of years back MA changed the signs because it was one of only a couple of states (I think NH was the other one) that didn't number them by the mile marker on the interstate which is mandated by the federal Government. MA had to change them otherwise we would lose federal funding, so now the exit's are numbered by the mile marker instead of numerical order. I personally don't like the new system because there are some places where theres no exit for like 10 miles so the exits will go from like 12 to 22 instead of 12 to 13. I've lived here my whole life so I don't even look at exit signs anymore but it's supposed to help truckers because it gives them a better idea on how far their exit is.

Everyone else explained the exit numbers changing; you got off Exit 32 in Biddeford - Maine changed their exit numbers back in 2004. The exits were all messed up before then. From the NH state line they went 1-2-3-4-2-3-4 because the Maine Turnpike didn't start until after Kittery. Biddeford used to be Exit 4. Ps, it was super cool seeing you driving around my stomping grounds of Southern NH and Maine. Got so excited seeing the TA in NH you stopped at, and the (pis-cat-uh-qua) bridge.

Here’s a good one. Years back Pennsylvania ( approximately in the mid 70s) had exits matching mile markers. Then a few years later changed them to numbered exits from the state line not corresponding with mile markers. I am sure as starting east bound from the Ohio line the exits were numbered. Then a few years later changed all exits back to matching mile markers. This occurred on I-79 also. Oh well it gave their highway workers something to do. Cost is no object.

The new exits are based on how many miles you have traveled on the road instead of how many exits there are. That’s pretty common in New England
@CrAzYnAdEz
@CrAzYnAdEz 8 ай бұрын
It's actually common throughout the U.S. except for New England. If I'm not mistaken MA and NH were the only ones as of 2 years ago who didnt number their exists that way. They only did it recently because they will lose federal funding for the highways.

It's Piss- cat-ah-qua with the emphasis on "cat" - there was some discussion back when the US was formed that the northern and eastern parts of Maine should belong to New Brunswick and Quebec. Bangor would have been a major Canadian city & sea port if that had happened, I"ve kind of forgotten my Maine history in that regard. Re: changing exit signs, it's one of the reasons the US didn't convert to metric - too expensive to change all the signs nationwide. I live in Maine, exit numbers changed on the turnpike and 95 maybe 10-11 years ago now. It's taken me that long to get used to the numbers and not refer to exits as they used to be,

The interstates and freeways in Massachusetts were using a sequential method to number the exits. The federal mandate forced MassDOT to implement a mile-based system. You may have noticed that your favorite highway exit has a new number to correspond with the mile marker, accompanied by a sign indicating what the former exit number was before the change.

It is expensive, but it had to be done. The yellow signs are there temporarily, then they'll take em down like they did in PA. Also, this is why we aren't switching to the Metric system, it would probably cost trillions. There are 2 highways that I know of that use the metric system. I-17 from Tucson to the Mexico border. and Delaware Tollway 1, where the exits are metric but the yardsticks are miles, unless thy changed that too,lol.

Glad to see you back in New England...and in particular my old stomping grounds in York and Kittery, Maine. BTW, it's Piss-catta-qua ;-) If you remember, I was the one that sent you and Brit the lacey multi-colored baby afghan for Theo. Good wishes to you and yours. Probably the reason they changed the exit numbers is that in a lot of states the exit numbers is the same as the miles down the highway, in New England, generally, we just number them sequentially. So if you have them sequentially and want to plunk a new exit in the middle of the mix...how do you number it? Also by mileage it's easy to determine how many miles to the next exit.
@lisahinton9682
@lisahinton9682 8 ай бұрын
@kelhapam In the old days, when life made sense, a new exit was given a letter. So, for example, it'd be exits 7, 8, 9, and then a new exit was added and it was exits 7, 7A, 8, 9. Easy..
@grifftrips5001

They had changed their signs because they standardized the exit numbers to be the mileage marker on interstate system. Its a federal highway should be standardized across all states. Maine previous just nimbered their exit. So exit 2 could have been at mile 10. Now its exit 10. So u know how many more miles to your exit. Federal Government funds being used to do the change
