...I liked it, however my dislike for Edison gave me a little twitch. Yeah DC helps, however alternating current goes the distance and does alot of the cunnecting. I know you were going for a LIGHT BULB concept, but let's be real, Tesla should have been included.

Cloud computing really does empower businesses of all sizes. The ability to scale a business and leverage advanced functionality quickly and cheaply is the catalyst for the explosion in the digital economy. The startups & the smallest businesses can quickly pull together best of breed marketing, CRM, logistical, HR & other advanced systems that are even more advanced than those traditionally restricted to enterprises. Great animation with a wonderful historical perspective. Who is the artist?

Note the other utilities mentioned (electricity, gas, etc.) are all either publicly owned or heavily regulated utilities. They have to be so that they serve the public good, not turn into inherent exploitive monopolies. Which suggests cloud computing, or at the very least connectivity, should be as well. The free market doesn't handle utilities very well. (Some will complain about public utilities at this point; some suck, but that's due to *bad* regulation, not regulation as a concept.)

One flaw: Tim Berners Lee invented the World Wide Web (hypertext transport protocol + HTML), not computer networking as a whole. Computers were connected on networks such as Arpanet, which later became the Internet long before that.

Hi Databarracks, I would suggest you could also add that organisations or customers to cloud computing (see 4:35 in your video) not only have access to compliance, scalability, reliability and transparency.. but also continued innovation which i believe to be the strongest advantage among them!

Babbage lived and worked in the early 19th Century not the 20th. Also to say that Edison 'invented' the light bulb is to ignore the string of people who pioneered work in this field including Sir Joseph Swan and going back to Sir Humphrey Davy.

Hi all. I need an advice. I work as a graphic designer. My portfolio is set in Picassa account (free and so far accurate for my needs) but my works published there are only in resized and compressed versions. There’s no raw files, including layers, so I can’t do any corrections on original “base” material. I work mostly on my desktop (in a workplace) and there are many situations when deadline forces me to apply instant changes and modifications in posters or other files. Sometimes they must be printed ASAP and although I’m working remotely form home not all files are moved to my home computer. That’s why I’m wondering about using cloud to storage files (large files often) and have direct access to it any time I need. My employer is fully minded to this idea, but he wants me to do some research and show him few options. Which service would You recommend?

would have to disagree with much of the end. You can have memory and storage shrink to a size that you could never use them up. Only charge what you use?? Revolution? One time fee for life sounds like a better proposition. References to Edison, switched on switched off >_

The only thing that you will get with regulating cloud computing is higher cost, monopolies and corruption.. as only big corporations will have the power to hire large amount of lawyers to study and comply with such regulations, also you will get for free (call now!) big corporations paying millions to politicians and lobbyists to pass regulations that only the big guys can deal with, in order to stop the competition..

Yes Welcome to Cloud Computing the weakest point in any computer network is where a 3rd party is entrusted with your data and often the area exploited by hackers, governments, competitors, etc. If anything this is the reason a number of orgs have shifted away from the idea of SAAS (Like Salesforce) Instead creating their own cloud computing within their corporate networks. The Target and Home Depot, for example, have learned about software as a service the hard way, and paid well for their education.

As a history of computing as a utility, this is pretty poor. There's no acknowledgement of early timesharing systems, or of the factors that lead to those being largely abandoned in favour of local computing for many decades and for reasons that were quite valid at the time. There's also no acknowledgement of unsolved problems with cloud computing, particularly in the area of security. (No, cloud is not more secure than local computing, because in practice you're vulnerable to weaknesses in *both* your local systems and the cloud service provider's systems. That could be mitigated by end-to-end use of cryptography but usually isn't at the moment.) All in all it's a very rosy and oversimplified picture, as you would expect for an advert that pretends to be something else for most of its length. Disappointed in Stephen Fry; he usually has more integrity than this.

This is interesting, but it is just an advertisement masquerading as history. It is interesting, but it contains several errors. It also glosses over the fact that the industrial revolution wasn't usually a good change for most workers. Stephen Fry is usually quite picky about keeping his facts straight; I was disappointed that he would let that go for a fee. I was also amused that it starts with the abacus, then says, "Since then, mankind has been inspired..." while showing a caveman with a fire.
