Just to clarify, the fuel cut-off tap that I added is in-between the vacuum petcock and the carbs as a precaution against future failure as it's a known fault on these bikes; the factory fuel petcock tap is so far still working as it should ;)

The Er5 is a decent bike , I’ve owned my bike 15 years from new , so far I,ve replaced 2 fuel taps , Cush drive rubbers , fork seals , they definitely don’t like e10 fuel though in honesty I’ve never put any in my bike and I also use a ethanol protectant every now and then , my bikes in use all year round though not in snow and ice , I’ve covered a little over 37000 miles on it and as a few bits on the frame need a touch of paint especially rear of bike under seat , the bikes been 99% reliable ( just fuel in engine issue) only bought it to keep a few years but 15 years later I’m still a happy owner

Sounds like you've got a good one there! They are great bikes for sure. Feels like you can chuck all sorts of challenges at them and they'll plod on. I know some folks don't think they're the most exciting ride out there, but I love them as an everyday bike, all year round just like you said. It's a pity they don't still make them! Have to keep on of the daily maintenance seems like the salt hates them but they're so easy to work on I don't mind. Hopefully parts will be around for a good long while too! Have you had any troubles with the rear brake causing that oval distortion to the rear wheel? I've been lucky so far but I've read it can be an issue with these bikes.

No problem with the rear wheel as yet 🤞and rear brake as given me no problems , I,ve just mot’d bike and getting ready for some front pads , last year had new fork seals and steering head bearings , I want to get out on it for a spin now but I’ll wait until tomorrow morning 30 mile round trip into Sheffield to work 😂

@@Paul.Gascoyneuk that's good news about the rear.. long may that continue! Nice one on the mot, I've got mine in a couple of months but it's the first I've had with this bike as I bought it last spring with a years mot so might do a service next month and pull the mot forward a bit for peace of mind ;) That's a good distance to keep her ticking over for the commute! Long may she serve you well 😎

been riding my 1997 er5 for a few years now....usual stuff..had to rebuild the fuel tap when the diaphragm failed . it's a reliable commuter. does suffer in the winter months due to the poor paintwork on the frame etc. but all in all a good little bike to get you from A to B ..

Absolutely, I found a similar thing with mine over the winter. It got to the point when I would be washing the road salt off almost every day to try and prevent trouble. Loved that bike though!

Awesome video man could you possibly explain more in depth or even better make a video about how you made the manual fuel shutoff to bypass the shitty vacuum fuel taps?
@deepspace_motorcycle Жыл бұрын
Hey thank you for watching! The tap I put on doesn't bypass the vacuum tap as such, it sits between the existing vacuum tap and the carbs, just for peace of mind for me in case the petcock vacuum tap fails. Essentially, all I did was uplug the fuel pipe going out from the carbs off the petcock and run that into this new on/off tap. Then I got some 8mm inside diameter fuel line and ran that from the new tap to the petcock. This way I leave the petcock in place and just turn off the new tap as required. Hope that makes sense! I go into it a bit more in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nn7dfKmFmNGghq8

Why is having it on res, rather then on a better option? Got my ER-5 today and was wondering. Thanks for the vids mate!
@deepspace_motorcycle7 ай бұрын
Hey, sorry for the late reply! I've since changed bikes but if i remember right I think my logic was that the pipe for 'Res' sat lower in the tank than the 'On' one, so having it set to that meant that I was clearing the lower pool of fuel continuously that can sometimes get a bit sludgy otherwise at the bottom of a tank. Have fun on the ER-5 - i really miss mine!
@AlexanderMLarsen7 ай бұрын
@@deepspace_motorcycle my thoughts exactly! Great! thanks for the info. Would rather utilize as much tank as possible, with a fuel gauge as faulty as mine

Is it homemade front wing of wheel?
@deepspace_motorcycle2 ай бұрын
No it's the original, but I had to get a bit creative after I had a bit of trouble removing it. The metal bracket underneath the arch is now held tight by the two wing nuts and it's had a coat of tough acrylic paint that makes it look a bit likes it is made of fibreglass
