It's amazing how many similarities there are changing the tire on steam locomotives with the heated ring and then sliding it in place and having it set. Plus if this tire had been built in the US the carbon black for it would have arrived by rail. Virtual rail cameras occasionally catch nine large tires for Earth moving equipment moving on a bulkhead flat car. Spooky one is seeing an old front end loader being dismantled and the grapple hook punctures it causing a loud explosion and an occasional flame but at least a puff of smoke from 30+ year old air. Look closely from 4:25 to 4:35 and you really think a Lego robot is holding the tire!

Max psi is usually not, if ever, stamped on the sidewall of an Earthmover/Off-Road-Tire. General industry standard max is 120 psi for most sizes. However, certain factors actually determine precise psi's per position (Front vs Rear). These factors are size of bucket, size/weight of machine, weight of material handled, distance traveled, and speed. Most loaders are around 50-80 psi for front and 40-60 psi for rears but there can be large fluctuations in extreme operations.

Thanks Ralfie for sharing. It really puzzled me, I thought all tires had the air pressure written on them. Those 988.s are what the quarries around here use to load triaxles. Yep 3 buckets and 1 truck is loaded right around 22 or so tons. Some of those loaders they added some extensions on the bucket sides to get a bit more than the 7 yards. Always is a pleasure to have you pay us a visit my friend.

@@ccrx6700 I loaded 3 buckets of 1 1/2” concrete rock or 2 1/2 buckets of washed sand to get full loads on the trucks. I worked at a mine near the Brazos River in Texas, so our materials were river sand and rock. There are also a few quarries in the area that crush gray rock into sand and sized stone for concrete on the interstates. The sand always had a little water in it even after draining overnight, so it was quite a bit heavier than the rock.

On that tire, coming up with a pressure of 4.25 bar. That's 261.97 p.s.i. so a tire shop person would probably say to inflate to 260. And with a replacement and a call-out, we wonder why it can cost up to $2,100+ to change one tire...

Thanks for the video Dave! I used to fill the big tires like that at Lubotsky Tire in Milwaukee back in the 70's. Some of them were gigantic, and had to be moved around with the overhead crane. We filled some of the big ones with a green jelly that hardened into a soft rubber inside the tire. There was a place where you laid the big tires on their sides to fill, and rolled an explosion cage over the top in case it exploded. The smaller ones like the one in this video were filled on their side in an explosion cage. Sometimes the ring would blow off if it wasn't seated right, and it can do some huge damage if anyone is in the way of it!

Your welcome Mojo, glad you enjoyed. Never heard of that jelly you are talking about, interesting. Good question northernliving. I like the lag screws, they have superior holding power over the spikes. However all our tie plates have square holes punched in them for spikes, we don't have any plates that have the round holes needed for the lag screws. I would love to have a change over to lagged plates specially around our frogs, but that will probably never happen in my life time here on the RR, alas.....
