Changing Aspect Ratio in Films - Marvel's FANTASTIC Use of MULTIPLE Aspect Ratios in WandaVision

We are pretty accustomed to seeing the 21:9 aspect ratio in films vs a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio for television, but I’ve never before seen a changing aspect ratio in films. However, after watching WandaVision, I got a first hand look at Marvel’s fantastic use of multiple aspect ratios in WandaVision and saw how even something as simple as an aspect ratio can be used to enhance the storytelling of your film!

Not only are there many different aspect ratios to use for film, there are also different ways of labeling them. The common ones are 16:9 (also 1.78:1), 21:9 (also 2.35:1), and 4:3 (also 1.33:1), and examples of each are shown in this WandaVision breakdown video to help you better understand times when it may be appropriate to use each of them. This video focuses on a WandaVision review to show aspect ratio explained and shows how aspect ratio and resolution are different from each other. With various aspect ratio comparisons, you can see how the aspect ratio DSLR video settings can be changed to to get a more cinematic aspect ratio using aspect ratio bars in editing such as pillarboxes or letterboxes and how they can even be changed mid-sequence like in the WandaVision aspect ratio changes. In this aspect ratio tutorial, you will learn from the WandaVision aspect ratio changes in order to know how to change the aspect ratio of your video for a cinematic look or other style. I want it to touch some insecurities and inner lies, using different aspect ratios. 16:9 for plain reality, 4:3 for missunderstanding (ok boomer), 9:16 for projections to online (what protagonist wants the world to see) and 21:9 for how he sees himself (as a movie star of his life,).

beautiful video, very smart and unique way how marvel uses the aspect ratio in wandavision. i haven't seen the series myself because i'm watching on iron fist from marvel but i will go and watch wanda vision when i have time. what I'm actually struggling with myself and I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to do this is how you make the quality looks old, for example the A team, you might know how that works? or do people use layers to make it look old or just a old camera?

I’ve done that before with making some videos look old with a 4:3 aspect ratio as well. I still made the original videos look as good as possible and used multiple effects and layers. I’ll have to make a video on it!

I suspect the film was shot in whatever aspect ratio then later on faked into whatever aspect ratios needed to simulate the different time periods......

Yea. It was shot on 16:9 and then black bars used for all the various timeframe aspects.

Am I correct in my assumption that this is only possible with fake blackbars? That means the film was probably shot in 16:9? But now the question for me is how to prevent the fake overlay from creating artifacts when rendering or is this type of film making not suitable for a 21:9 monitor at all, for example? Because otherwise there would be more black bars. or is there a trick to change the real aspect ratio within a film, but I doubt it. how else should you be able to animate the bars :D thank you very much for the Video!:)

Yea, you’d have to shoot in whatever the largest size is that takes up the most real estate (16:9 line you said) and just add overlays after the fact for the changing aspect ratios. But you don’t actually have to overlay black bars. You can trim the top or sides as necessary to make it whatever aspect ratio you want to change to.

@@CamberFilmSchool That means by trimming the format instead of putting something on top of it, I get the desired black bars and no annoying artifacts when exporting because the black bars come from Premiere. if I export in 16:9? can I also keyframe this effect? Thanks so much!

I think that would be the case. And you can definitely key frame it. You could still use some black bars as a template for how far you need to trim the actual clip. Then disable the black bars and key frame the trimmed section how you want.

You should've watched the Mandalorian chapter 9, that switch when the Krait Dragon came out its cave is awesome. Marvel just copied the idea and expanded on it.

Wandavision had a purpose for it. Movies do it for their reasons but as someone who uses a projector it pisses me off. I hate black bars and can set up my screen for whatever aspect ratio I want. I can't change it during a movie and it is a constant distraction. Many modern movies have started doing this as well as older "updated" movies.

@@CamberFilmSchool It won't compete with the clarity of a 4k TV but I can watch movies at 120" that look great. If you go with a projector I'd recommend buying used/refurbished with a return policy and buy one new enough to get an extra OEM lamp.

Hi. I am about to edit a film with 2 different aspect ratios and the director has not been able to explain how this should be transcoded. I've never edited footage with different ratios. We will have 16:9 and 2:35. What should the sequence setting be when editing these 2 ratios? Thanks!

I would go with 16:9 for the base aspect ratio and add letterboxes over the parts where its 2:35. But that would also depend on what the majority of the film will be. But I prefer letterboxes coming in than pillarboxes.

Technically 21:9 isn't an accurate number, Marvel movies are presented in 2.40:1, while 21:9 is 2.33:1

I’m this case the overall video is edited on 16:9. And the parts with 4:3 just have pillar boxes added over the sides and the 21:9 parts have letterboxes on the top & bottom. And using key frames to make them slowly slide up/down/left/right.

@@CamberFilmSchool Homecoming was actually in 2018 (before WandaVision) and practically the series has 2 timelines like Memento, but rather than using colour vs B&W, they use different aspect ratios to delineate one timeline from the other. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
