The advantage of the two-piece jaws is the ability to remove the hard jaw caps and replace them with soft jaws. The Taig lathe three jaw chuck comes with aluminum jaws, and I rapidly found just how useful being able to custom bore jaws for a workpiece was.

Sometimes you come across a 3 jaw chuck for sale and you don't think about the other set of jaws or they just don't have them. This was a cold splash of water in my face. I need to make a chart for my chucks and come up with a spot where all the extra jaws go. With serial numbers too. I'm cleaning up the garage at the moment and finding all kinds of stuff. You can't get bogged down with every little item. That's how I got where I am. I'm really impressed with your shop and your machines. You're living the dream.

Hi Lyle, Excellent video. I remember the first time I had to change the jaws I did not see any numbering, so I put some punch marks on each jaw that matched the numbers on the slots. After removing the jaws, the numbers were stamped on the bottom. I have a mini lathe, but use a 5" Bison scroll chuck. I keep a large rubber band handy so when I need to change jaws the rubber band holds them in the slots and turn the scroll backwards until I see the number 1 jaw drop and then run the scroll forward. When I see the outer edge of the jaws align with the outer edge of the chuck at the same time, I know they will all meet at the center. You and your family stay safe.

Good video. I have two 5" three jaw chucks for my Logan lathe and both have the reverse jaws. They are just the right size to fit it a red plastic Folger's coffee "can." Since I have two, I now have the luxury of being able to keep one chuck with the inside jaws and one with the outside jaws mounted up and ready to go, so I just change the whole chuck rather than switch the jaws out. It has only taken about 40 years until I recently arrived at that plateaux of affluence. I have always been careful to keep track of the jaws and the coffee can storage has made that easier. A three jaw chuck with one set of jaws is usually worth less than half as much as one with both. Thanks again for another great vid!

Have a six jaw scroll chuck with jaw caps. Flipping them over is a pain but also kind of a dance. If on gets 'in the groove' it is not too bad. Found that six jaws have so much exposed 'workings' that they need more frequent cleaning.

I was taught 50 + Years ago to just allow the first thread of the scroll to block the slot. Insert the correct jaw, apply slight downward pressure, whilst turning the scroll back slightly until you hear the jaw click into engagement. Wind in and do the same to all 3 jaws. In that way you are sure that you have not missed a thread and put them out of adjustment. Never had a failure yet. If you own a 6 jaw chuck, it is even more important that you do not miss a jaw by 1 thread, as it is a lot more work to correct. Regards from Australia.

One case where you can actually reverse the jaws on a scroll chuck are the Unimat scroll chucks up to the mid-70's. The teeth on the jaws are narrow and vaguely diamond shaped, so that the they fit the curve of the scroll in both directions. The chuck is still smooth turning and actually pretty accurate, but that's due to the small size of the chuck and a good design. A friend argued last year that reversible jaws just aren't possible on a scroll chuck. He was stunned when I demo'd a jaw reversal for him! I hate changing cap-type jaws, much easier to have two dedicated chucks!

Very intersting Lyle. You mentioned having a combination of inward and outward facing jaws on one chuck to hold odd objects (I hope I understand that correcly). It would be cool if you showed an example of that if you get the time or the chance to find such an object to use as an example. These are the interesting little details of your videos that I enjoy the most. Thanks!

If you want to hold a bigger object from the inside, you use the outward facing jaws. Like an object that is as large as the chuck itself. For example, holding a disk brake from the backside.
@PaulSteMarie
@PaulSteMarie Жыл бұрын
With a 4 jaw chuck, you can hold something like a short bar crosswise using the last step on the reversed jaws to hold the ends while the other two jaws in the normal configuration hold the sides of the bar. If you wanted to turn a boss in the center of a flange (think of a steam engine gland), that would be one way to do it. Turn the boss, drill and ream it, and then transfer it to the mill to profile the flange to whatever shape you need.

Interesting and practical--these short subjects really are gems for the beginner! It is so important to be able to picture what is going on in the mind. Uncommon to see the chucks of the the lathes as well, which helps a great deal to understand what is going on. I guess to some extent the three-jaw models are 'auto-centring' whereas the four-jaw ones give more versatility at the cost of extended set-up.

A quick tip.. I have a mid size China lathe with self centering three-jaw Chuck. In my case the Jaws are not numbered nor is the base. To identify one two and three you flip them over looking at the rear of each jaw and you will see that number one has the most thread catches and number three has the least. You can then install them by running the thread inside of the Chuck the same way you did in the video and start off with number one with the most catches then number two with the mid catches and then number three as your final and everything should line up just fine. 🍺

Very interesting, I have wondered how you get the jaws lined up to meet in the center, now I know. My small chuck on my woodworking lathe (an add on device) uses bolt on jays and is a pain to change them. But for years I did all my lathe work between a spur center and a dead center. Now I find the lathe work more rewarding.

While reversing bolt-on jaws may be more cumbersome and time consuming than swapping out a different solid set, such chucks do have an advantage. The standard hardened jaws can be replaced with "soft jaws" and machined to fit a specific part. They're made of aluminum or non-hardened steel, and you can make them yourself if you have a milling machine. It's a way to get an old worn chuck with too much runout to run true, if only for that size, or to hold very thin parts that are otherwise difficult to hold straight, especially if you're making many identical parts. Something to consider if you're shopping for a new chuck. I made a set of aluminum jaws for my chuck. I've never used them, but they're at the ready should the need arise.

Instead of spying the scroll start to insert each jaw with correct "timing", I simply start them all in randomly with some central traction (fingers or rubber band) while running the scroll backwards. Each jaw hops in turn on the reverse scroll motion. One jaw I've engraved to read "hops last"; after it hops with the reverse motion, you scroll forwards to get all three engaged with the correct timing. Works every time, first time.

Excellent Mr Pete. I thought I would reverse the jaws on my 3 jaw chuck a few months ago. They weren't labeled, and I soon found out that you can't reverse them like a 4 jaw. It took me almost 30 minutes to figure out the correct orientation. Needless to say I took a punch and put dimples in the jaws and chuck in case I forget and ever dis-assemble the chuck again.

Worn chuck jaws can be reground for accuracy but there’s only so much you can do since the scroll is also worn. It’s very important how the jaws are “loaded” under pressure to prevent movement while they’re being reground.

Can't you also rotate the set of jaws either CCW or CW as long as jaws 123 stay in sequence? My chuck is not marked and occasionally I have to sync them up. So, I never know if they were back to the original position or not.
@ellieprice363

Yes, it should not make any difference in accuracy as long as the jaws fit well in the three positions.

Watching the serial number of the chuck was new to me. No problem as the current chucks are different, 3 jaw 4", 3 jaw 5" and 4 jaw independent 4". The 3 jaw 4" has got the numbers hand milled by a shaking hand and the jaw numbers are hardly readable. Looking at the jaws back side and warming up the grey cells under the hair it's possible figure out which one that must go in first. Hopefully there's a mark on the Chuck telling where number one has its home. Nice familj picture. Don't use and ruin any of Your wifes har bushen! Joking!
