why though? that i7 is worse than the 4th gen i5 from my old "gaming" pc and i already had garbage performance on that.

Let's just say that both 1st,2nd,3rd gen Intel uses the same socket(1156). The only thing that separates the 1st gen and 2nd gen Intel from compatibility is their chipset. 1st gen uses H55,H57 chipset while both 2nd and 3rd gen uses H6x or even H7x. The chipset number goes higher as generation goes higher too 1st gen - 50 chipset (1156) 2nd gen - 60 chipset (1156) 3rd gen - 70 chipset (1156) 4th gen - 80 chipset (1150) 5th gen - 90 chipset (1150) 6th gen - 100 chipset (1151) 7th gen - 200 chipset (1151) 8th gen - 300 chipset (1151) And so on Note that starting 2nd gen. It'll be compatible with it's next generation too but not any further, because Intel ways lol. 2nd - 3rd gen 4th - 5th gen 6th - 7th gen 8th - 9th gen They follow the Intel's tock tick process 2nd gen - Tock - new architecture 3rd gen - Tick - new features/refresh/lower nodes/new technology
