I'm doing a brake job on my gl1500 today. Rear replaced so far. Front left looks good. Stopped to look up the other sides removal by viewing your video after shining up left side and continuing on to right. Sorta feeling my way through like yourself. The difference is I go ahead and remove the pins plus go ahead and remove the banjo bolt so that I can push my pucks back easily without damaging anything. Reassemble with new pads after removal cleanup and inspection of caliper. Top off brake fluid in the caliper with my lil red squirt can then throw banjo bolt back in and bleed. Hope this helps you and anyone else in the future. Thanks for the heads up on which side is linked to rear. Shiny side up boys!!

The beauty of those "caps" that cover the shoe pins is they're another safety measure to keep the pins from working their way out due to vibration. Thanks for the video as I've been looking at the service manual and pretty much understood the process but seeing it in live-action still helped immensely. Thank you!

Thank you Gordon, just watched this and then swapped out the left set. My existing pads had tons of meat but they were that sintered bronze metallic stuff and would barely stop the bike. The bike came with an organic pad set so thought I'd switch them out. It was helpful indeed to watch the process first so I knew what to expect. It made the job a doddle.

The left caliper and rear brakes are hooked together, when bleeding always do front left first or you will never get rear to work! Voice of experience!!!

Very helpful. First time he done this excellent job on explaining detail close ups for small clips and other items. One of the BEST DIY videos I've seen. The person leaving this response is not the pretty photo shown, It's her husband, owner of a 92 1500 SE Wing.

Just subscribed. Thanks for the informative video. I just picked up a 1989 GL1500 with 8000 original miles. Getting it road ready now.

Welcome aboard! Most of my videos on the GL1500 are 1st time jobs and probably not the best way to do some of those jobs, I had a GL 1200 before I was doing videos and I did a number of repairs more than once or twice because I had it a long time.

Have to make a correction here. You have the pads reversed here. On a 1500, the front left caliper is controlled by the foot brake, along with the rear wheel. The hand brake controls the front right caliper. I understand your mix-up, as the 1200 is the opposite. The techniques are good and informative, though.

The caliper pivots slightly upon braking (firmly) and the lower end of the mounting bracket pushes on the black plunger which operates a bypass valve in the fork leg to block oil flow and firm up front suspension. Anti dive system. TIP: Best to loosen pad pins while caliper still mounted. Easier to remove after when you have the caliper off and in hand.

The bearing & the pivot collar are part of the anti dive setup. Your educated guess was correct. You are a certified motorcycle mechanic now and can change your buddies scooter oil for 199$ which is a win win for both of you:)

Thanks Will, That guy with the scooter stopped buy yesterday and I asked him if he had them change the oil and he said yes, I told him next time he can get the oil and filter and bring it here, he said they changed the automatic transmission oil too and it has 2 places to drain if from or something like that, it doesn't have many miles on it, nobody changes trans oil in a car and they go 200,000 miles on the factory oil, so I don't know why they need to change trans oil on that scooter.

If it's under warranty it's probably mandatory for the miles that are on it. His service intervals should be in his book.

Ahhhhhh. I'm sure you know by now why that caliper wasn't flexing. Hand lever operates the right caliper and rear pedal operates left caliper
