Even if using a paper gasket, you still need a light coating of RTV. If not, there is a high chance of a leak developing. I know from first hand experience.
@ufixitauto52372 ай бұрын
I can definitely see it helping, but I have yet to have a leak just letting the gasket do it's job. Maybe I'm just lucky!

When you clean the diff flange, be sure to prevent any old material from getting into the case.

I will never use 80w90 or 75w90 again. Its meant for tiny fuel economy gain. It you tow, haul go at least 75w110. High quality 100% synthetic is a must...

Well done , thanks. Why don't any of the other uploaders drain the fluid before they remove the cover? I've watched 2 or 3 other videos and they don't even mention a drain plug, they just remove the cover

I'm guessing some people prefer to just pull off the diff cover because it's either faster OR most people are afraid their drain plug is seized to the diff housing I guess haha 😂 I'm glad the video helped! 😁

Bought the factory oil, but a cheap Felpro gasket. 😂. The Gm silicone gaskets GM has for the 6l80's are really nice and reusable although I would alway swap in a fresh one while Im there. The added price is cheap insurance. If I have parts I replace and the original was good, ill keep them in my plan B parts bins. Im keeping my truck till I can't glue the rust back together anymore. 😂😂

My rear diff blew week-half ago… easy to fix but Daam rebuild kit is pricey. Was the driver side bearings and the pinion bearings as well. Have to replace the ring and pinion gear as well🤦🏻♂️

I have the same truck. It's a 2000 1500 made in October 1999, so next month it'll be 25 years old. I just did this a couple hours ago and my oil was shockingly still a brown color, mostly. It wasnt completely black like this was. How much oil did you put in there? I had a quart in one of those squeezable bags, the little placard above the fill plug says to leave the level "15-40mm" below the plug. How the hell would you know if it's in that zone? lol. So I just used the quart and hoped it's high enough. a little more than a quart came out, im not sure because it was draining into something that had a little motor oil in there already.
@bosshawg1789Ай бұрын
Filling to the bottom of the fill plug is proper for some diffs but not this one. Take a wire and bend the tip down. Insert it into the fill hole and hold it level to the bottom of the hole to make a "dipstick". It will take more than two quarts but don't guess. Go to a dealer or trusted mechanic to find the capacity if you need to.

Why take the cover off . When it is not leaking . Just refill and done . Drive it for another 30, 000 miles and change again with synthetic. The paper gasket will leak a lot sooner than RVT . The RVT last almost forever on diff covers .

Hey thanks for the time n effort making the video ! Can you tell me was yours the G80 posi locker 3.73 or 4.10 ??? thats whats in my 05 gmc sierra 1500. Btw I couldn't see or feel a drain bolt under mine lol
@ufixitauto52373 жыл бұрын
It's a 3.73 :) I have the GT4 code in my list of RPOs :) I updated the title of the video so it includes it! Thanks! :) and no drain bolt? That's odd! Even though they're considered the same truck, they did change some things from 2000 to 2005! Thanks for the call out!

@@ufixitauto5237 i may have missed the drain bolt. Now that you mention it i think it remember seeing gt4 in my glove box rpo list as well. So yours is the G80 locker ? Just to be clear.

@@ufixitauto5237 ok just googled GT4 is the 3.73 ratio code lol learn something new every day 😄
@ufixitauto52373 жыл бұрын
The more you know 😉 my RPO codes do not list G80 anywhere though, so I'm probably going to say that my truck does not have a G80 😅 if you have a posi G80, then you need to add that limited slip additive
@brentacusmaximus66773 жыл бұрын
@@ufixitauto5237 actually they say not to put in additives. The ac delco 75-90 gl5 is what a G80 P locker takes and it has just the right amount in it. I'm just hoping I missed the drain bolt for less mess.

Are those 373 gears , “ stock gears “??? I have gmc sierra year 2000 v8 4.8 … would i have the same gear ratio
@ufixitauto52372 жыл бұрын
Yes they are stock gears and I have no idea haha. There should be a tag somewhere on the truck to let you know what gears you are equipped with.
@ufixitauto52372 жыл бұрын
Look at your door or glovebox for a placard called Service Parts Identification. There should be RPO codes there that tell you what your car is equipped with from factory.

Don't know why you went to the trouble of removing the cover especially if it wasn't even leaking. Looks like the gasket sealer the previous person used was the black colored Right Stuff which is as good if not better than an actual gasket in these applications. If it ain't broke don't fix it!
