Excellent demonstration on changing the CVT! I also have a 2014 S model and changed the trans fluid a few years ago. I actually purchased one of the Malufosa dip sticks and found a serious problem with them - it read low fluid and when I checked the over flow it was right on point. I wrote up a review and asked Malufosa to contact me about it because I love the fact that they made the dipstick. Anyway, thanks again for posting this. I learned that I’ve been going WAY to long between changes and need to get out in the garage soon.

Great video. Thanks! There are 2 CVT oil filters on the 2013 altima: One inside the oil pan, another paper filter on the exterior for the oil cooler. Both should be changed at about 90-100 thousand miles. And clean the interior of the oil pan at that time also. There is a good video out there for doing a complete 8 quart flush also. It's just a little more work.

You are so correct! It's absolutely imperative that the upper cartridge filter be changed. The trans actually starts to shift funny as it gets clogged with particulates. Not only that, but as the filter gets restricted, it dramatically affects cooling. I installed a trans temp gauge on mine, and before changing that filter it would regularly go to 220. Since I changed it, seldom goes over 205 (f) I would recommend changing it every 30K along with dropping the pan (to clean the magnet and change the screen).

The trans pans are easy to remove and replace. If the crush washer is not leaking, then you don't need to replace it. Depends on how well you want to do it. Just took mine into the shop after watching a few videos and deciding I'd rather have a shop do it properly and try to get almost all of the old fluid out. The entire transmission holds about 7.25Q, so the lower you are below that number, the more old transmission oil you are keeping in the system. If you want to do this properly you need to be heating it up to 110, draining the main drain plug, draining the secondary drain plug, if you really want to get involved you can blow air into the lines to fully clean out the system and if you want to take it a step further clean out the inside a bit with nissan transmission cleaner, replacing the secondary and main drain plug. Refilling either by keeping track of how much you've removed and adding that much back in, or using a purchased dipstick. Then run the car for a bit, while shifting between the different gears, and allowing it once again to heat up to 110, then while it is still running remove the main drain valve(NOT THE SECONDARY) and then replacing it once it gets to a drizzle. The less you remove, the more old fluid you are still leaving in there, which kind of defeats the purpose, especially with how shitty these CVT's can be if you don't take care of them. I know your comment is old but I want others that also are doing research on the job to hopefully read this and learn a bit. There are filters as well that can be replaced, but often times this is not necessary as it's a mesh filter. EDIT: Also you should use Nissan NS3 with these, I would never recommend using an off brand on these. There are multiple videos that say the same thing as well as the techs I talked to. Go to a Nissan Dealer direct to buy it if you are looking for a deal on it as it is expensive and they often carry a lot of it.

Information from Nissan Service Manual. After draining the transmission fluid, - (Or any time) -The correct and final level is determined by the temperature of the fluid.. That is determined by removing the overflow plug while the engine is idling - the selector lever has been shifted thru all positions for 5 seconds each, and returned to park - while the the fluid level is between 95F and 113F degrees. At that time "When the flow of the CVT fluid slows to a drip, tighten the overflow plug to the specified torque. (89 INCH lbs). The fluid level is NOW verified as being correct and you can THEN, for the FIRST time check readings on a dipstick. The original existing aftermarket dipstick readings may not align with the final and correct level - IF not, you can make file marks on the stick, or make note of what the reading level is. ALSO, hours later when the engine and transmission are totally COLD and the car is parked level, make a mark on the stick for future guidance - but even that would change depending on the existing weather temp. Only the mentioned idling temp level does not change. IMO - Because the level is affected by the fluid temp so much, some may would misunderstand readings using a stick NOT designed and tested for that exact engine and overfill the CVT - which would cause damage from foaming over time.

First of all I want to thank you for taking the time to make this video. There's not enough videos on Nissan's. Probably one of the reasons is that Nissan will not warranty their transmissions unless you have them do all the warranty work not just the transmission but the oil changes everything the dealer offers a lifetime drivetrain warranty if you let them do all the work. Which basically you might as well just buy a maintenance contract if you let them do all the work you will spend enough money to buy a good maintenance contract. Moving right along. It's good to know that you can do this for cheaper than the dealer. But what about warranty do you have any plan for that. It was operating normally before I serviced the fluid and I really didn’t notice any difference afterward. I would definitely recommend doing it. You are buying yourself protection down the road. It snaps in place, take a screw driver and push it down into the clip to release the cap and pull off.

You decided not to flush because others were damaging their transmissions when flushing. What is happening with their flush procedure that's causing damage to the transmission? If you let the CVT pump out 1 quart at a time, and replace each quart, I'm wondering where the damage is coming from?
@andrewbuchanan82794 жыл бұрын
You aren’t damaging the transmission. Your old fluid is full of grit from the wear of the clutch material. That grit helps your worn down clutch plates grab. If suddenly that grit is replaced by nice smooth clean fluid, then your worn out clutch plates don’t have enough friction any more.
@vincentperiolat46104 жыл бұрын
@@andrewbuchanan8279 that is exactly what I've heard, from several knowledgeable mechanics. generally true for all transmissions, not just cvt's.
@jt82803 жыл бұрын
@@vincentperiolat4610 Is that why newer cvts are a seal unit hence auto manufactures do not want you to replace the fluid?

6 qts is what my 2012 maxima took, but i blew out 2 more qts through the external filter lines with my air compressor. the oil that came out when pushing air was really really dirty .ran car for 30 minute till at 165 degrees and was right level. btw decided on valvoline cvt. 77k on my car probably the first change. but i bought used.

Disagree: cold has all fluid that will be at bottom drainable, just allow time.

You definitely shouldn’t go 90k miles per cvt fluid change. Also, I’m pretty sure the Valvoline CVT Fluid is not NS-3 rated.
@NoName-gv6nm Жыл бұрын
You can easily do it actually. Blackstone lab results show even 100k mile cvt fluid is perfectly good and hardly broken down at all.

Hi. My efficiency never exceeds 22.1mpg. I live in the city but I saw yours at 31.6mpg. What am I missing? 2013 Altima SV.

Gerald E slow it in the pedal. Let go of the pedal sooner when coming to stop light and it’s on red.(no need to approach a red light fast). Avgd 28.5 purely city. Also check tire life and tire pressure.
@pete89spotsin4 жыл бұрын
I live in New England. Out here there are long stretches of road that are consistent and speed and there is no stopping and going. Typical city driving gets typically low mpg, Due to the frequent stopping and going. Every time you have to come to a stop and re-accelerate, it takes double the power and fuel to regain speed and momentum. This drastically lowers your numbers in mileage. The longer you're able to stay at one speed the longest, the better your fuel mileage will be. Also gentle acceleration is always a plus. Let your continuously variable transmission do the job. I often press the pedal just enough to get the car rolling, after that your transmission will keep accelerating in speed without you pressing any harder. This is why I continuously variable transmissions (CVT) are ideal when it comes to achieving fuel mileage in a vehicle.
@occckid1234 жыл бұрын
Straight city mileage is terrible on almost every car. I avg usually over 34mpg. on every tank but its a mix of everything including idling and goimg into nyc but. Dont use ac or automatic climate settings that uses the ac compressor and dont exceed 1500rpm. Steady cruise on city highways and font drive during rush hour are all tips lol.

Ok , no copper ring, level, and valvoline is good as Nissan fluid. Ok cool !
@rrmorris67 Жыл бұрын
You can avoid messing around the the leveler drain bolt and doing a temperature reading and all that. Assuming that you have no leaks, simply measure what came out and put that exact amount back in. Simple as that. Castrol also makes a CVT fluid that fits the bill.
@bobbyd6680 Жыл бұрын
That's one way, not the best. It doesn't account for any leaks, and assuming it had the correct amount added during the last change, if one had ever been done.
