Changing Our Skoolie Propane System

We're changing our original propane system for two good reasons. For one thing, our first propane tank had to be mounted nearly three feet deep, making it difficult to reach for refilling. Secondly, with a permanently mounted tank, our ONLY option for filling would be to drive into a propane filling station. With our new dual-tank set-up, not only are the tanks easy to access, but we could easily remove one or both tanks to be filled/replaced without even moving the bus! This will be a great added convenience since we'll be boondocking for two weeks (or more) at a time, in possibly remote locations.
After selling the original 12 gal propane tank (unused), Mike fabricated the "cage" for our tanks out of scrap metal from previous projects. Then we cannibalized our own BBQ grill as well as our "Campulance" stove for these two tanks!

About Us:
Hi! We are Mike & Kerry, the proud owners of a 1996 Bluebird rear engine (pusher), 40' school bus! We named her Bussy McBusface in honor of the RRS Boaty McBoatface travesty.
We're building a Tiny-Home-in-a-Bus for full-time living in the most adventure-friendly way possible! In other words, Bussy will not be parked in our driveway, waiting for weekend or holiday getaways... when we finish the build, we'll be packing everything we're keeping into the bus and driving away from this old house forever!
We plan to be boondocking the majority of the time, so you'll see that reflected in our choices throughout the build (100 gallon water tank, composting toilet, solar power system, etc). We'd love to have you stick around and follow us on our journey, throughout the Skoolie Build, and to Infinite Adventures Beyond!
Mike & Kerry

Interesting move, over here, most go from bottles to a refillable system as you can fill them at any gas station that sells autogas (LPG) and you don't need to empty the bottles before refilling fully. As always, great quality of work.
@BussyMcBusface
@BussyMcBusface 5 жыл бұрын
2 reasons we did this. 1) there just wasn't a place to put the 12 gallon tank with easy access. 2) If we run out of gas parked in some remote location, it is easier to take our small vehicle and fill the gas than it is to drive the bus in only to return to the same spot.
@TheGalifrey
@TheGalifrey 5 жыл бұрын
@@BussyMcBusface Fair enough, over here we just have remote fillers and a separate pig tail/regulator to take a bottle in an emergency BUT we generally don't take another vehicle with us due to the towing regulations for a trailer over 1500 lbs. Our coaches also have massive storage capacity compared to a school bus so a lot more accessibility. www.busandcoachbuyer.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Given-the-low-unladen-weight-there-should-be-little-concern-about-utilising-the-capacity-of-the-central-luggage-hold.jpg Anyway, keep up the good work, love your videos.

Happy belated birthday. Good setup. 2 suggestions I have. See if you can find a padlock with a long enough shank to go around the tubing and an arm of the tightening handle. It will keep it from vibrating loose as well as keep it from walking off while you aren't around. Get some sheet metal tall enough to go up to the floor joist and weld it in in front and rear of your tank frame. Will help keep gravel, mud, and other road debris or your tanks and hoses.

Another great video! Smart move on the propane. I agree with a previous post that you consider rotating the tanks so the valve is not facing out and for the same concern. My personal experience with the self changing regulator was all good, never had a problem. As a side note I am still laughing at some of Kerry's comments and what I think were turkey gobbling in the back ground!

You need something hold or pin the handle for tighten down on the tanks. A carter pin or some sort of strap to stop it from vibrating lose as you drive down the road, ( wouldn't want a tank to drop out if the clamp gets lose)

Another great issue but I would like to offer a couple suggestions on your LP installation if you please. 1. I would face your tanks so your fittings do not face the inside of the bus skin; the most minor sideswipe could knock off your hose completely or at least enough to allow a stream of LP to escape, expand and find a source of ignition and feed a raging fire you couldn't quench or stop the flow. I suggest they face anywhere but out. 2. even with the snazzy top rim capture Mike made, it would be even better if you installed a captive thumb screw in the bottle base holder that will hold the tank squeezed against the other three sides and stop the inevitable clangs and rattles when you are driving. Finally.........I might replace the threaded rod you used to a coarse threaded one unless one enjoys fiddling with that capture device in the inevitable`114-degree heat and full sun. Mostly petty stuff except for point #`1, but recognizing the near brain surgeon intensity and precision of Mike and your willingness to support (put up with) his quest for perfection. I decided to intrude. This was another great job to watch; you guys define 'sympatico'.
