ohhh, so that's what the thing is for! Thanks! 13 years later, and your video is still helping. 😁

This was great. I am a bit uneasy doing stuff like this for fear of making it worse than when I started. This is very helpful.

I was not aware I was supposed to add a rod between the two gauges, I just always put one at each end. Just found out I need to replace the motor in my grizzly G1017, which is 30 years old. Cutter spins but not the feed chain side. :( Ugh!) great video, thanks!!!

This gauge sets the knives parallel with the cuttinghead, not parallel with the planer table. Sometimes it's necessary to set the knives higher on one end with a dial indicator jig to square them with the table.

It depends on the planer. My Jet has a separate adjustment to set the cutter head parallel with the bed.

do you find that when tightening the bolts the angle of the blade to head causes the balde to drop a bit . If you do I have started using magnets to hold the blade up real;ly tight against jig and tighten all bolts centre first and outer edge last . When you tighten them up check wth a feeler guage to see if they have moved

I have the planer, but do not have the tool to determine the height. I bought a tool that can be adjusted to the correct height, but I do not know what height to set it to. Could you perhaps advise what the correct height is?

Normally, if the knife is ground to the normal cutting angle, you should see less than a millimetre of the flat side of the knife body above the cutter head surface. Never place the knife so that the ground bevel is 'drowning' under the edge of the groove where the knife is sitting.

I have the same planer, and setting tool. But Where did yu get the springs? Mine didnt come with them? Seems like a easy way to set them.

stairman2 I went to a local farm & fleet store, or Menard's has springs as well. make sure you know what size. I got springs that were just barely under 1/2" x 1" for about a buck each.
