If the engine is lacking power I have had some issue with some of my heavier karts where the engine didnt have enough power to get the belt to the final drive position with the stiffer spring. So it would be stuff about halfway upper or down the pulleys and not be able to get it any farther.

So my torque converter is new and its hooked to a 301. I noticed once I got everything aligned properly that it seems to hold at max rpm at around 15 mph for a few seconds before finally dropping rpm and begin to finish top end. Should I go up or down on the holes to get it to hit top end sooner?
@jwsbackyard64133 жыл бұрын
You would want to go backwards in holes. So go to hole one rather than 3. That will reduce the tension on the spring and it should start changing the gear ratio sooner.

Will chain belts work on these torque converters aka CVTs?
@jwsbackyard64133 жыл бұрын
I mean if you could find a chain belt that was the correct length and shape it may work. I would wonder how quickly it would wear out the converter surfaces though.

That's pretty cool. I can honestly say until I saw this video I have never seen a Go-Kart do wheelies before lol. Anyway I just finished installing a new Torque Converter on my 196cc Mini Bike and it has the Red Spring on it now set into the #2 hole. If I went the opposite of what you did and put the spring in the least amount of torque hole would I definitely get a higher top speed out of it ? The way it sits right now in the middle hole I am able to get 40 - 41 MPH. How much faster would I get up to if I switched holes ?
@jwsbackyard64132 жыл бұрын
Changing the spring setting won’t change top speed because the finally gear ratio will always be the same. You would need to either use a smaller sprocket on the axle or larger sprocket on the driven side of the torque converter to get more top speed.
@JNC19732 жыл бұрын
@@jwsbackyard6413 Ok yeah I already switched out the 10 Tooth Sprocket for an 11 Tooth on the Driven. So if I moved the spring to the most torque possible hole and got that really good torque at take off my Top Speed would stay the same as it is now and I'd have better take off ? That's great !! Think i'll do that then.
@jwsbackyard64132 жыл бұрын
@@JNC1973 Yeah you get a little extra torque but the final gearing will be the same. Changing the spring setting just changes the rpm at which the pulleys start changing their ratios so you are in the lower gear ratio for longer.

@jwsbackyard64133 жыл бұрын
Just flip it around pointing forward and find the bolt holes that line up with it in that position. You'll have to grind some of the fins off of the mounting plate so the chain won't rub.

Do you notice any difference in top speed when you change the holes? I've been trying to find an answer but nobody I asked seems to know. If you change the hole to 3 and still get the same (if not more) top end I don't see the point in using any other setting.
@jwsbackyard64134 жыл бұрын
The spring setting only changes the rpm at which the pulley engages and starts to change the gearing ratios. The final ratio will be the same so the top speed won't change.

@@jwsbackyard6413 say my mini bike has too much low end torque and just does wheelies with the slightest tug of the throttle, will putting it to "1" help with that
@jwsbackyard64133 жыл бұрын
It may help with that. It may still have to much torque to stay down though. If you can’t get it to stay down by going to the 1st hole swapping to a smaller wheel sprocket or a larger jackshaft sprocket on the converter may help reduce the torque and will give you a little more top speed.

@jwsbackyard64133 жыл бұрын
The spring setting probably wouldn’t be the cause of that. Make sure the belt isn’t dry rotted. Also the belt is directional and has a flat side and an angled side. The flat side should be closest to the engine and the angled side should be facing out. If it’s not a belt issue the cart may be a little to heavy for the converter.

This kart had quite a bit of torque already and doesn’t get good traction in the grass as it Was built to be a drift kart so I haven’t really had enough traction to really tell and I’d expect it would add some torque but not enough for me to feel since it was already over powered.

That setting is needed for low power engines, like a 6hp. Increasing rpms of the motor before changing transmission ratio will also increase power output from the motor. Weight wouldn’t cause it not to expand at all. I’d take the driver off and make sure something isn’t wedged or blocking the inside bell from moving. The brass bushing is known to get wedged and not allow the driver to expand or retract.

No it more than likely wouldn't help with that. It's been a while so I can't remember exactly what fixed it but I had a different torque converter that used to do that. I can't remember if it was just the belt needing replacing, of the belt was on backwards (there is a flat side and an angled side to the belt and the orientation matters), or if the belt was just to small but those are all things I would look at.

@larrytemen478910 ай бұрын
You marked the holes backwards. The tighter the spring the the more it will open and drop the belt farther down. It’s actually for more speed. Not TQ. red in the tightest hole will give you the highest speed with that spring. The difference is more noticeable when you start adding power or don’t have as much power. Red is for your 4k or so rpm 6.5 hp motors. When you start getting into the 8 hp you’d used the green. Too much spring on a motor that can’t handle it will actually cause your performance to drop and bog the motor basically.
@jwsbackyard641310 ай бұрын
I actually thought I had labeled them wrong a while back and looked back into it. Every source I have looked at have it labeled the same as I do and based off of the results I have had I’m pretty certain they are labeled correctly. Also per comets manual they specifically say that increased spring tension changes the rpm range at which the converter changes into high gear. This would keep the converter in a gear ratio that produces more torque for longer and wouldn’t effect the finally gear ratio or speed. I’ve seen the video I think you are referring to and the difference in speed between the settings is related to the engine not being strong enough or able to turn enough rpm to overcome the spring and reach the final gear ratio. I’ve had this happen on some of my heavier karts where I had to lighten the spring tension to help the underpowered engine reach the finally ratio of the converter. Top speed isn’t the intended purpose of the spring positions though.

@psychologicalsigma99173 жыл бұрын
I thought green spring was the fastest?
@jwsbackyard64133 жыл бұрын
The green spring is the factory spring that comes on a genuine comet torque converter. It is supposed to be the same spring as the red spring which is the factory spring on the knock off converters. The yellow spring is much stiffer and delays the driven pulley from opening up for a few extra hundred rpms which makes better torque and better acceleration.
