Shelf collectors are my biggest turn off, I only buy games I want to play or are interesting to me. I never understood the point of wasting money just so you can have it sit on your shelf and be a waste of space and money

I'm an admitted shelf collector for N64. For me, its because I only had 2 games for my N64 as a kid. My parents were broke but my grandparents got me the system. I remember going to Walmart and wondering what all those games might be like and never knew. Now Im older, work in software, and have some disposable income. My collection is mostly to give that younger version of myself the ability to take a game down and check it out. Will I play them all? Probably not. It scratches an itch Ive had since I was a kid though. Not saying Im right here, but we all have reasons why we do these things.
@trihardcx6743

@@HatedJared I totally get what you're saying. It's mostly about getting stuff that you either had, or wished you had as a kid. Having a complete set of all Pokémon games CIB on my shelf offers the same value to me as a painting might offer to someone else. I still play many of my games, but there's nothing wrong with collecting for the sake of collecting as long as it gives you some joy.

I figured out long ago and from the observation of others in the very early youtube days that its just better to collect smart and just get what really interests you. Selling stuff you don't need every once in awhile too is a good practice I've taken part in When I was younger it wasn't to a crazy extent but I did grab games left and right but I stopped that and sorted out lots of stuff I did and didn't want. I love my current collection and im still adding odds and ends to it all the time at the pace I want and playing stuff in it all the time

I had to stop collecting games and consoles because I already collect records and comic books, and ran out of space for everything even while being way selective about what I'd actually buy. It was kind of a bummer to make that decision, but I've never regretted it. Common titles keep getting more expensive, and I'd never been interested in having a room full of shelves of games that I rarely play. Plus a lot of games I really like are too expensive to even consider purchasing, like Snatcher, Popful Mail, or Tiwnkle Tale.

Finally, I get to see what the Luna store looks like. Maybe I've never worked in a VG store, but being a collector since 1985 and having witnessed closely both the comic book speculation of the 1990s and the persistent VG one since 2006, has made me as sour about the whole thing in a very similar way as Ian. I'm sure we both are gonna laugh so hard when those awful collectors end up with hundreds upon hundreds of useless, unsalable pieces of plastic they've never played, just like the morons who bought multiple variants of comic book covers that today are not even worth a nickel a piece.

Neat to see Luna store front. Over the past twelve years i purchased games i knew that i would enjoy for years to come, i haven't got to all of them or beating all of them that will take time. People that just buy games for the hell of it or to show on social media that is a little irritating. Now i use to buy music CD's thinking i would like them and some i didn't and am going to sell them to free up space and a little coin in my pocket to buy some music that i have sampled and really like. For the past three years off and on i considered selling most or all of my physical collection and playing games in digital and flash cart forms. In the end i decided i like having a physical collection that is why i started buying back retro video games.

I'm so glad I was able to quit collecting games, I used to buy a lot, retro, collector's edition etc. Finally able to break free. Saved so much money, LESS stress and anxiety. Having shelves that isn't stacked with games makes me feel more calm and relax. I spend my money mostly on good food, exercise equipment, clothes and dates. I'm also playing less games now too, games can't hold my attention anymore lol. Meeting new people, keeping healthy and cooking is more entertaining than gaming.

Good idea man. it becomes a waste of money buying games just to sit on shelf getting dusty. I've lost interest in collecting. I only buy here and there and only what i want to play. I do not have a a wall of crappy sport games just to have a complete collection or a million variations. I probably have less than 40 games now and that is ok with me. All of the games on my shelves are pretty much a family collection, because several of them belong to my two brothers, and a few of them were initially bought for my father, but he never really got that big into console gaming, he still plays a few things on PC, and he still likes a few certain arcade games, and would probably still play them if he had easy access to them. Also there are no sealed games, everything has been played or at least tested once, wish I could play all of the ones that have only been tested, and I'd like to play a lot of the others again, but these days, finding the time to do so just isn't easy.

The funny thing is I haven't felt any tinge of regret or anything, actually feels good to sell it off. I'm the same way as well. However, I have started paring down my collection to games I am really interested in, have sentimental value, or will realistically play in the near future (within a year or so). I figured less games on the shelf makes it easier to pick which to play next. Also, buying a bunch of games at good deals but not playing for years is more expensive than buying one game off of ebay, playing it, and then selling it when I am done for really just a loss on paypal/ebay fees. So just having a smaller, curated collection of games I care about and a smaller backlog of games I intend to play soon just feels better than a bunch of stuff I don't even have shelf space for. So, personally at least, I treat buying games I know I wont prioritize and play any time soon as the same as me buying games just for the sake of collecting. Eventually I would like about 1/2 of my physical games gone and start doing the "1 in, 1 out" rule for buying and selling games I want to play, unless its a game with replay value then I will keep it. For newer games, whenever I see someone selling them on a forums or a Steam/PSN/eShop sale, I tell myself "it will only get cheaper" so I don't blow money on it now just to have it sit for years. I am not into "the hunt" for finding games in the wild, and would rather just play them, so at this point I'd rather be one of those people that just pays ebay prices. I get the same way with PC stuff too, I spend so much time upgrading and tweaking my PC that I end up spending what little free time I have messing with the PC instead of just playing games on it.

i totally understand and agree. some people come into game collecting like they are looking to invest in good stock. they look for those rare expensive games hoping to make a profit. others are basically hoarders and not really into games like that. its good that you realized you didnt need so many games taking up space moderation is key. i personally collect for ps1, ps2, ps3, gamecube, wii. combined so far i have maybe 200 games that i actually would and will play and enjoy. others i might sell off when iam done. quality over quantity is key. not every game is worth the money and space. collecting a set from a system is probably the biggest waste of time and money. i hope however you didnt sell your samson and flintstones dinosaur peak when you dumped your nes games lol.

Interesting topic! I just started collecting for my favorite system of all time the PS2. I want to have a complete North American set but for me I want to play them as well! I don't want to just buy them for the shelf. I want to be able to give it to my future kids (if any come lol) But I don't want them to go to waste at a flea market getting rained on or destroyed because they are old. Games do circulate as any thing does but some people do take it too far. I saw this one guy who had ps2 and xbox sets SEALED and will never open them! At that point why have them if you don't intend on playing them!?

In this minimalist time we live in, I think collecting gets confused with hoarding a lot. Having a large collection doesn't make you a hoarder. A hoarder has trouble throwing something away like a dirty dish rag. If your never going to play something, sell it. It's not that hard. Every collecting sphere has annoying people, and a lot of the negativity in the game collecting hobby recently isn't going to help anything. I don't know how many people say their going to sell their collection and then go more buy more plastic junk that Gamestop sells, like POP figures.

My only real problem with video game collecting are asshole market cornerers. The ones that buy up ALLLLL the copies of certain games just to boost the "value" of it and hold it captive for an absurd ransom. It absolutely butt fucks the economy of the hobby and turns a fun casual time into an overpriced snore.

I think collecting the games you truly enjoy and play as a kid are worth keeping, but going out to buy a sports title that you may never play? Meh not my cup of tea...Keep it small and focus on titles that matter to you, for me it's heavily on Pokemon/Mario/Rare-ware/minor Zelda titles. Nothing else interests me. I love Pokemon and I don't mind spending on something that I still truly enjoy the old/new. If I see something worth $20, but say it's some random title I know nothing about, Am i going to purchase it? No, I would much rather save that money and put it towards on a rare Pokemon item, lets say a Pokemon center limited edition item that I may of wanted for years and has value to me.

I was never a collector, I just sold my childhood on eBay. I kept the games I liked, and bought the rentals that I never owned. Sometimes I replace a game if my label is damaged. Only if it's under 80, though.

Because of everdrives and R4 cards my collecting has greatly dropped, all i really need down, now all i need is a decent "R4-Like" flashcard for the 3DS and i would really drop in my "retro" collecting

@@DaGameNerd ill look into it, do you know a site where i can get safe 3DS roms?

@@Spintechfilms Unfortunately no, I've usually backed-up (copied the roms) off my actual cartridges and played them off my SD card since I have both a Gateway 3DS and Homebrew 3DS

You can also install the games directly on your 3ds without the need for flash carts. They install in a way that the 3ds reads it as if you bought it, same as the switch does as well.

Yeah I stopped N64 collecting because of my everdrive, N64 games are retailing for almost as much as they did 20 years ago it's insane. I'm still collecting Gen 6 and Gen 7 that I like since most titles have never been ported and are unlikely to ever be ported to newer consoles or PC and I want to play them. Sure you can emulate, but it's not the same. Gen 8 is starting to push me to digital only though, most games I can get on steam, I only pick up games that are platform exclusives.

It's so hard to find good older games in the wild now and I hate it. Only find shitty shovel ware from the DS Wii era.

Try a local swap meet or flea market. Don't buy from game resellers. Look for a family selling stuff. Don't be afraid to hassel and know when its appropriate. Some people have eBay prices and even go to their phones to look up prices when you ask how much. Buy a large quantity of games and sell all the ones you don't like to make up for the cost. Most of my collection is free. I use a sega genesis for a pillow at night i have so much crap.

Started selling off when I realized Everytime I wanted to play something, I just played it on an emulator. Maybe other people can enjoy it now, I've had them since I was a kid and teenager, and letting them collect dust just seems wrong.

Having kids will change your life. You sell off all your crap so you can afford to wipe crap off your baby's behind. Cribs and car seats are expensive, so are diapers. Or you could just keep all your stuff and start a new hobby collecting food stamps.
