Band BIO:
Mina Otomonai, known professionally as Chanmina, is a South Korean/Japanese rapper and pop musician. She debuted in 2016 independently, before releasing her major label debut album Miseinen in 2017. In elementary school Chanmina was bullied for not being able to speak Japanese fluently. During this time in her life, she discovered the song "Day by Day" by Korean band Big Bang, and felt moved by the song, inspiring her to become a rapper. Chanmina originally planned to move to South Korea to become a K-Pop musician in her second year of high school, however her friend, female rapper Messhi, convinced her to stay in Japan. She first came to fame after participating in the 2016 Bazooka!!! Kōkōsei Rap Senshūken [ja], a high school rap competition broadcast on BS Sky Perfect!, and her independently released debut single "Miseinen", managed to top iTunes Japan's hip-hop song rankings chart.
FUN FACTS about band:
- Her mother is a professional ballerina
- Chanmina was born in South Korea,[2] to a Japanese father and Korean mother, and lived in Korea until she was three years old. She spent her childhood traveling around Korea, Japan and the United States.
- Due to her mother's influence, Chanmina learned ballet and violin from a young age.
Studio Albums:
(2017): Miseinen (未成年, "Underage")
(2020): Never Grow Up

I disagree on the idea of “real” and “natural beauty” it’s equally as harmful as the idea of women having to wear makeup and be presentable, there’s only one or the other I just don’t get why it’s even thought of in general, if a man knew how much makeup I wear he’d probably think it’s a lot but then I wear it and he thinks I’m barely wearing anything, your perception isn’t always the reality of it. The standards women are held to are always too high (and for men in certain circumstances aswell but it’s ridiculous I feel like I have to say that for my comments to be taken seriously and not be told men go through the same thing)

I feel like this is one Alan would need to watch twice to take it all in. Or more lol. But I think you guys got the general point of it being about the dangers of beauty standards in society.

Nice reaction. It’s a lot to try to read and watch. As a Japanese speaker, I can say that the subtitles could use some improvement. But sometimes you just can’t translate such a different language/culture into English. Basic background is the Japanese music industry is tightly held by an oligopoly that ousts any “trainees” that don’t fit the exact image of their label (think young girl groups being cutesy but not having real talent). This has rules the Japanese market for decades and just recently some new labels are helping actual Japanese artists get out there. Chanmina is hardly overweight for American standards but she is definitely more booty than the industry accepts.

From one metalhead to another: Please check out Chanmina's live performance of this song on First Take! It's a performance with live musicians and she actually gives a short explanation of the song's background at the beginning and while the video is very creative and great, this live performance is what actually really blew me away. To me she sounds much better and cooler there vs the studio version. It has more of an edge to it, you can see her amazing performance and the singing part at the end also sounds much better to me. Also it's just a cool piece of music, arranged like that for the live band.

@@dicodec I just stumbled across that video myself today. I only knew Chanmina, basically only this song actually, because my wife had found her some time ago and showed me this very video you reacted to. I found it cool, very creative, great message and all but overall it wasn't all that much my thing. Now that live performance... that got me! I guess you could put it this way: If it was metal, I'd say the live performance comes across much heavier to me. And yea... she's a badass!

Nice reaction... I don't know, really, 😳 sorry for the sincerity. What I read out there, if any fans want to correct me, please, is that Chanmina took months to decide to produce this MV. It's about traumatic experiences that she herself had. Chanmina is the producer of the MV, certainly she thought someone else would detract from her project. The music stop, like a movie, the flashbacks, the final part, which is another song (Dahlia), everything is at the service of a concept. I think this is a video that you should make another Reaction video, with a female guest (who has practice reading subtitles 😉). Honestly, this is a video that is difficult for men to understand what Chanmina wanted to convey to people.

No , most women wears make up to look " naturel" : make it appears as perfect glass skin, good skin color and a bit of blushy cheeks , without any freckles , pimples ... Most women would agree that social pressur about beauty exist and the more you try to reach it the more you hate yourself.. I love this song for being "true" and the amazing vocals really helps the message

We discussed this a lot more in our live stream when we reacted to it. Us as reactors have to really take everything in not just the music. As the music videos do often tie in a big way to the meaning of the song. As is the case with this one. Disturbing for sure but part of a bigger picture.

@@dicodec I haven't seen the Live stream so I'm in the dark. But I agree with you, especially in the case of this video, where Chanmina talks about something that is very important to her. If you want to watch it as simple fun, that's OK, it's really good music, nothing wrong with that. But it's half the experience, the author craves much more.

The beauty standards in asian countries are VERY high, even to this day. Women who were scared, especially on their faces, were seen as disgraced and hidden away or covered by a mask at all times. The reason asian artists are so/start so young is because the industry can't think people 16+ can make it. The fact that Chanmina is half-Korean most likely also played a part in her being mistreated. She didn't fit into their mold, so they taunted her to oblivion, trying to get her to quit.

I wish peace and good to all the viewers who watched this video! I definitely liked the music. The soloist read the rap well. I liked the song. The plot developed dynamically. The mirror in front of which the girl was sitting already made me think that the split personality is directly whistling out of her head. (a geisha? - a prostitute?). I'm not talking about morality, I'm talking about demonstrating the problem to society in this format. Beautiful picture - " Learn to die beautifully!" - that's what was coming from the screen. The change of genre after the gallows was appropriate. BUT!!! Why did it seem to me that the whole video was reduced to the destruction of consciousness? Did the authors show a way out of the problem of young women by offering them such a way out? I do not accept suicide in principle! This video touched me! I wouldn't show it to my children and grandchildren.
