I dont think you are supposed to set a circle hook. From fishing down south in the ocean for tarpon you are supposed to just start reeling and keep the pressure on.

You are absolutely right! First time using circle hooks and didn’t really know.

Hello, In the Lac Des Chats portion of the Ottawa River, there is 80% Catfish. The Arnprior Fish Game and Conservation Club is looking to hold a derby next spring. We are currently trying to recruit anglers that can do demos on cleaning Catfish and be on a sub committee. I hope you and some fellow anglers would be interested in helping out.

Where the rideau river falls into the ottawa river is where the monster cats sit. You need a boat. Dusk and night is best. I've caught 25lbers and I've seen some bigger cats caught there. Cut bait works best.

Thanks for the intel! Maybe I’ll give this a go this fall.

was this early April? Nice fish!

This was sometime in April last year! Probably no later then the second week of April. Much different conditions this year though. Might not catch them for another week or so.

I love to fish catfish on the ottawa river, on the Gatineau side but i always get caught at the bottom.. You guys know a trick to not get caught? Are these round hooks good for that? Thanks
@ToughCountry8 ай бұрын
What kind of weight are you using? No matter what rig you use a snag will always happen when bottom fishing in a river like the Ottawa. But certain weights can help with getting less of them. Also size of bait can make a difference for hooks getting snagged.

Catfish make up 80% of the fish bio mass of the ottawa river....An Elder once told me..."When you see your very first dandelion at full blume in the spring? Catfishing at its best." The reason catfish are so abundant at that particular location? About 25 meters off shore is a 25ft hole on the right. When I fish the same location l use an entire walleye head as bait. BIG BIG BIG BAIT! Cat fish over 30inch are common there.

Wow thank you for this info!! I’ll have to try some bigger bait this year.

Nice Channel Cats Bud! Thanks for sharing! 🤙

Good action guys. There’s nice big channel cats up from just before Pembroke through Deep River and Rolphton. At Rolphton and a bit past, you’ll be getting bites from walleye and pike (Muskie there too) then suddenly they all stop. The channel cats come in as if to take over and then your hooking them! I once had a 3 or 4 lb walleye on and a big pike followed it almost to shore then nailed the walleye! It was big but no it could eat the walleye. Broke my line. No way you can play that into a net. Hooked a big sturgeon there once by accident. Broke my rod (my walleye rig) Couldn’t get it off let alone in. Didn’t stand a chance lol.

That's my turf, I've only fished the Petawawa for cats successfully, can't wait to find a spot in Deep!

Love it man, well done! finally managed to get into the channels this spring in the Ottawa. I’ve found catching my own cut bait has made all the difference from using worms. Cheers

Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it! That’s awesome to hear that you got on em and used your own bait. We will have to try catching our own!!

I live in Sandy Hill, Any recommendation where to fish around here? is the rideau river and good, or should i go to the ottawa river?
@ToughCountry3 жыл бұрын
Both the ottawa and the rideau are good rivers. Fish both until you start finding the fish and you’ll have a blast!
