Channel really did have some of the best idents, right from the start.

As I understand it, they never used the 1989 Generic ident created for them. Channel still tries to maintain some kind of identity, even to this day. When I occasionally watch it, they will occasionally bring up Oscar Puffin, and still for whatever reason call their programme 'ITV News Channel TV' and make references to 'Channel TV'. I think it's because a large part of the staff who worked there when it was an independent region are still there and hanging on to their identity.

Agreed I'm from Jersey and whilst I rarely watch it I know many people still call it Channel TV. They still broadcast in SD though wonder if they are the only region still without a HD broadcast?

@@wokingjames Checked on Wikipedia and it says that ITV Channel TV still only broadcasts in 576i which is SD. It really deserves HD because everywhere does.

@@raymonderrity1419 I don't watch ITV much anymore and if I do it's on demand therfore is HD anyway

@@wokingjames Freeview still has SD channels alongside HD channels. I really think this should change to be HD channels with UHD channels with the SD channels shut off because basically everyone has a 4K TV now.

ITV was available to a limited number of homes in Jersey before Channel Television launched on September 1st 1962. Cable television had arrived in Jersey in 1953 to transmit the coronation. By the mid 1950s, a large chunk of Jersey was cabled for TV by Rediffusion. So in 1958, when Southern Television launched in the south of England, Rediffusion in Jersey relayed Southern TV to their cable subscribers, who watched ITV for the first time from 1958. When Channel Television launched in 1962, the cable provider provided both regions in their cable pack.

Just to add, the 80s/90s ident is pretty good, but looks like one of those corporate sequences you used to see at the start of videos.

Cool video Adam Channel TV launched one year after Border Television same date, same month in 1962 also the last itv region to broadcast in colour. Also the only itv region to avoid the 1979 itv strike.

The early 80's idents have part of Keith Mansfield's, 'Superstar fanfare (a)', from KPM 1260 - Lifeforce, accompanying them.

For a company with revenues in the low millions of pounds they probably had to do what they could afford. When the bigger ITV company (now known as ITV, plc) bought Channel in 2012 both economies of scale and more money to put into the service became available.
