Oh man did I love standard then. Resto thragtusk was so filthy. Getting to play control decks with sphinx's rev, supreme verdict, snapcaster, lingering souls, think twice etc. Well on the way to a modern esper control list with that haha.

Just stumbled across this video... it feels so weird seeing inkmoth nexus on one and knowing the opponent is playing wolf-run ramp.
@downsjmmyjones1017 жыл бұрын
So weird seeing Wolf Run Ramp against UW Delver and then seeing Junk Rites vs UW Delver the next game. They existed in the same Standard for a short period of time but their popularity was on the opposite ends of their legality.
@downsjmmyjones1017 жыл бұрын
I must have thought they were but yeah I noticed today that their flashback Standards encompass a little extra.
@JustKeir7 жыл бұрын
This gave me flashbacks to how abysmal Angel plus Thragtusk was to play against.
@mattm77987 жыл бұрын
I didnt play then and i know what you mean. tusk into resto is like seriously, why do both these cards A. Exist at the same time and B. only cost 1 colored mana each.
@TheLettuceGuy7 жыл бұрын
I played “junk reanimator” and in the end of the deck’s lifetime I actually preferred slime over tusk in that spot. Had a couple of perfect games where my opponents died with no permanents in play. I miss that standard format! :(
@downsjmmyjones1017 жыл бұрын
May we never see something like that ever again. Seeing players gain 20+ life off of Thragtusk ETBs was very common. Games were a fucking SLOG. Skullcrack was good but not enough. There were too many ways to get more ETBs with Unburial Rites, Resto, and just other easily castable Thragtusks. I was THIS close to putting in maindeck Torpor Orbs because everyone and their brother was abusing Restoration Angel+Thragtusk as well as Snapcaster Mage.
@BlightningBrightling7 жыл бұрын
I tried so hard for a WBR reanimator/midrangey thing to work and beat it, but man that tusk was just too stupid good with resto. No matter how many times i blinked obzedat, and my own angel of serenity, friggin tusk/slime every time. seriously, I went to a GP where the main question was "how are you going to beat junk reanimator?" half the pros said "by playing it myself."
@MrSwkelly897 жыл бұрын
standard was so must more powerful back then
@mattm77987 жыл бұрын
kind of yes. The spells were but on a whole, the creatures are better with each new standard by a little bit. Though the titan cycle is as powerful as any creature for their mana cost released in the last 5 years.

As evidenced by Randy Buehler's Gauntlet of Greatness where Delver made it to the Quarterfinals.

I accidentally hit the wrong button when I slammed Slagstorm, I originally thought my line was to hit you for 3, then next turn Pod out a Slime to kill your haunt. Two things went wrong. I hit the wrong mode, and I drew the Slime lol
@antonlukkarinen26487 жыл бұрын
At 41:10 why did you flashback though scour? Would it not be better to hold Dissipate in case they drew resto angel and try to grow the token after blocks? Since you can play scour at end phase
@paulm21637 жыл бұрын
I got this deck and easily 3-0'ed. I think it was 5-1 and the 1 was opponent on the play as Bant auras dropping Geist of St. Traft into non-sense on him turn 4 for essentially the kill. Other than that, this deck never really felt like it was contested.

Throughout your career how many times have you said "Island--->Ponder, go."? And across how many formats including different standards? I've been listening to you say that since i got heavy into magic during innistrad block and somehow it doesn't really get old. Obviously my question is rhetorical as the answer is an incalculable number rivaled only by the number of faces Rikishi has sat on. Just, ya know... food for thought.

Aaah INN-RTR Standard. The Age of perfect manabases with all 10 shocklands, all 10 check lands, and some halfway decent utility lands. Also the Age of Bullshit with Invisible Stalker(considered to be a design mistake since it's so cheap and hard to interact with at an uncommon rarity), Thragtusk(Value: the Creature aka the best way to spend 5 mana since Baneslayer Angel), Snapcaster Mage(considered to be the continuation of the legacy of broken invitational cards), Thrun(please tell me how you remove this guy in a world without old legendary rule?), etc.

Alex Keller - I know... hated that fkn deck
@thegreatmajora137 жыл бұрын
They picked a really bad version of it though. I was actually really excited to play with junk rites again and then I saw the list, and kind of just scratched my head. 0 copies of lingering souls in the 75. No hoof for the fun over the top wins. No gavony, in a deck with 9 mana dorks. It wasn't even fun to play, and I loved rites back when it was in standard. Not to mention that it was really hard to close the game out. They kinda thumbed their noses at both the people that liked and hated rites, as the people who liked rites had to play a REALLY bad version of the deck, and the people who hated rites, still have to play against resto/thragtusk and resto/acidic.
@kazibaker67477 жыл бұрын
I think they may have changed it for balance reasons. Looking at most of the decks, their options were probably stock every deck with multiple surgicals in the board, or weaken the front half it by getting rid of souls. I'm not saying the deck was too powerful, but against these decks which didn't really have rites decks that also won on the fair end, it probably just needed to be taken down a notch due to its great position.
@thegreatmajora137 жыл бұрын
I think they were overly cautious. They put in full power jund with scooze, junk rites natural predator, the lack of souls meant you almost always auto lose to tempered steel, and no hoof or gavony meant you had a worse end game then G/R ramp. I went from being excited to play my favorite standard deck, to being disappointed in pulling one of the least impressive decks in the pool. I can understand depowering it a little, but give us something to play with.
@kazibaker67477 жыл бұрын
I think the deck was still fine against the titan deck cause it was just more consistent game one every time. And affinity was kind of feeling 50/50 to me cause the sideboard was decent and sometimes you just blinked thragdaddy one or two times after slamming it turn three. But Jund is actually just awful for junk. Nearly impossible to win.
