Iam a Rugby Union and League person but I do remember that night very well it was the day before my 18th Birthday, when Ed told the News you could just feel everything went silent the Emotion just Followed, then Watching the late night news that night when they paid tribute to EJ Whitten and the songs like Hero and wind beneath my wings played I shed tears and Iam not ashamed to say that to me the same will happen When Wally Lewis dies.

Hero by Mariah Carey was the song used in the lap of honour at the MCG Ted Whitten last public appearance before his death and it was quiet in Studio 9 when the news broke.

I and football really misses Ted. He was the greatest character in footy and loved Victoria more than anything in the world. Commanded the respect and attention of any room he ever walked into.

I remember seeing it as it aired (albeit half an hour later, being in Adelaide and all), and even as the show finished, you could've heard a pin drop in the studio at the time. Ted Whitten earned the nickname "Mr. Football" for being a legend on and off the field, and his banter with John "Sam" Newman was always funny. 👍

Ted Whitten and Sam Newman worked great together in the early days of the Sunday Footy Show it was a shock to everyone in the studio audience they went quiet.

@@LachlanPattersonAFL Yes, the suddenness of Ted's cancer diagnosis, combined with his deterioration and demise left us all in shock. 😮 Another thing I miss is his chemistry with the late great Lou Richards during the handball competition. Whenever Lou said "And five more makes him twentaay!", for instance, you could be sure that Ted would echo it, leading to a "Shut up Ted!" in response. Therefore, it was quite touching of Sam Kekovich to continue that tradition when he joined The Sunday Footy Show. 👍

@EamonThePhilogynistWalford it did continue on the Sunday Footy Show for the Handball until 1998 when Sam Kekovich left at the end of the 1998 season.
