Some platforms like power 9 have longer cache lines and combine the ECC bits for the whole cacheline to allow more powerful ECC... but this also means that there is extra bits that could be used for tags.. so the tags could be made essentially free. Also with capabilities the MMU/TLB could potentially be eliminated-- which would potentially turn CHERI into a performance *increase*.
