It gets its name from an old cat food advert, as in "8 out of 10 owners said their cats preferred it" So they just messed around with that.

@@kisbie I know, I have been a fan of the original show since day one. I'm sure there are a few international viewers who aren't aware, which is why I commented. However, it's not the old slogan, it's a messed with version of the slogan, as I described. Cats can't say they prefer anything, just for clarification😄

@@pseudonayme7717 Seems it’s kind of a ‘play it again Sam’ Mandela effect thing where people remember the slogan being ‘8/10 cats’ rather than ‘8/10 owners’. A mistake I have just made myself! (And I can only blame myself as I have heard this before.) The misconception definitely predates the show though. The use of that title reflects that it was already a recognised phrase.

Cats are the ultimate mascot, in the old days (from antiquity all the way up until the 1950's) every ship, or submarine, had a cat on board because food shipments would often have rats hiding in them and the cat was there as pest control. Also cats are such stoic creatures that they can sleep anywhere that is warm, even if it's noisy, on a submarine they would sleep in the engine room on top of the diesel engine. Extremely loud but also very warm. Health and Safety and better food screening made having a cat onboard obsolete but if I was a ship's captain I'd have a cat, they are great company.
