How can Paxman be angry that the Labout manifesto represents the whole party's beliefs and not just Corbyn's? Surely that's the sign of a good leader - he does have his own ideas but he's willing to listen to the masses, go with what the majority want and do what's best for the country, not just his own agenda.

Rachel Oates I think Paxman was suggesting he was doing a poor job of persuading the party to accept his 'outlandish' ideas, to make him look incompetent.
@x8_ace_x
@x8_ace_x 7 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I thought, Rachel. I thought a manifesto was something discussed and then drawn up by a party as a whole. Not something the leader jotted down one night whilst pissed and then just released it. Mind you, that wouldn't surprise me with May's rush job of a manifesto, the way she's desperately trying to back out of a lot of the policies.

WAR Noodles, agreed,harsh questions do need to be asked, I don't like paxman's interrogation style though , but I do think he did give corbyn a slightly harder time, he literally didn't give him a chance to answer one question fully though. If nothing else jeremy corbyn gives honest answers and not political rhetoric, the same can't be said for (dis)may.

He was certainly not interrupting May as much as Corbyn. I even heard an approving "hmm" at 25:15. I think he tried to appear critical with May so as to seem unbiased but didn't manage to keep up the appearance.

In Spain we have a TV interviewer that copied Paxman's style right from the start of her career. The best critique to it was given by the Mayor of Madrid: "It's great that you're so eager to ask me so many things, but I think the people would enjoy more this interview If you also allowed me to answer them."

@Fnord Fnordington We're not complaining that Paxman is showing "bias". His interrogation of both Corbyn and May is equally boorish and obtuse. In the United States in 2016 the situation was reversed. Here we had a candidate, Donald Trump, rather than than a journalist, who was (and is) as (at least as, that is) boorish and obtuse as Paxman (as well as, of course, completely unqualified for the job of president by any reasonable standard such as, for example, education and experience).

You are absolutely correct. However, the point is to have both candidates explain their arguments and chain of thoughts. With his constant interruptions, no message is getting across to the public at all, rendering the whole interview useless. It's not an ego battle to see if they can withstand pressure from a TV host. They both certainly can or else they have no place running for Prime Minister.

(and its of course not about a number, its about many things that can result in different numbers depending on who calculates them) "so you cant even get your own views in the manifest ?" Nope, thats democracy. And it positively impresses me that the man is actually honest about the differences between his personal views and the parties agenda while generally politicians will just fake that their view is the party view and make lies and excuses to make it all consistent like idiot reporters like this man want it to be. American here, so a bit of an outside perspective. Ask yourself what is relevant to your lives as citizens, and evaluate whether A. Corbyn has those interests at heart and B. Paxman's questions have relevance to those issues. In America the biggest problem is rhetoric. You can actually convince people to go against their own interests if they're afraid of an outside threat. Ask yourself, is Paxman concerned with the British, or is he concerned with something else. I think you know that answer.

Actually it was his reply to Paxman's repeated demands to know why something Corbyn believed wasn't in the manifesto. And it's a reasonable reply to that. Paxman asked variations on that question four times and it was utterly silly. "But I see you like tea! Why doesn't your manifesto say everyone should drink tea? Ha?" That's pretty much what Paxman's questions boiled down to. I don't know what Paxman thought he was achieving. I guess in his own mind he was trying to present Corbyn as concealing his true agenda or something. But Corbyn was right - the manifesto is what the party as a whole signed off on, not just him. No idea how you took away that this was his reply to a question about benefits!

I thought so too... May was actually not a whole lot better aside from the Brexit part. And I actually noticed him *almost* admitting that he's changed his stance on things, like immigration and stuff, but he won't just come out and say it. But I think if he had started showing this change weeks ago, even hardline Brexiters might have been somewhat convinced. I thought that, while it's probably not the best strategy, it was somewhat a good idea of his to not address Hamas as enemies if one is attempting to converse with them, kind of like what Trump was doing with North Korea. Still... He's all over the place. As absolutely fucking horrible as May's stupid little extras are, (like banning porn and bringing back foxhunting of all things!), I've heard people talking about how the only thing she is really good at is power politics which is why the EU are scared shitless of talking to her. And honestly, I think she of anyone could make Brexit a success, regardless of what happens after. And maybe do something about the ridiculous amounts of unfiltered immigration. If she gets in the Brexit negotiations, it could be fantastic. And then we can vote her out next election for someone to bring back the porn xD

Jeremy Corbyn and others need to be given medals for what they did. • In 1995 Jeremy Corbyn met with Sinn Fein to help in a peace. 22 years later the right wing press have a problem with this. Toni Peckadowski so what is it exactly that does not yield economic growth according to you? the UK is a big and important market, you think business will just leave? that's just a ridiculous scare tactics. moreover, thanks to progressive policies the consumer base will massively improve so great for business. this has been done before you know! trickle down has never worked, middle class economics, like the new deal, was a big success! but the rich and the corporate class would rather go down on the titanic, as long as they have first class seats

Not really, generally when there is too much welfare it reduces incentives to work, fragments families and reduces overall happiness. A pared back welfare model with some but minimal state involvement actually gets better results. Just look at high welfare recipient groups around the world to see the negative results (low income groups in US & UK, African american groups, native american groups etc)

I have never really listened to Corbyn speaking before, but based on this Paxman interview he clearly is not the looney that the right-wing Press try and make out. @HabzTheMovieGuy

My advise is to listen to Corbyn a bit more on his facebook or on youtube and make up your mind. You'll find he actually makes sense all of the time. It boggles the mind as to how the media get away with such character assassination. You'll be hard pressed to find someone who stands by their convictions yet is able to have adult dialogue with others who oppose him. The truth is, social injustice is the biggest problem the UK faces... which in turn fuels a lot of hate. Reduce the gap from rich and poor, open up education for all and stop funding states like Saudi Arabia that breed terrorists and giving more tax relief to the richest. Corbyn is the only one truly tackling that head on.

Agree with all of it except May saying anything to get elected. She said pretty much nothing but wrapped it up in management speak. Sad to look back and see how biased the interview is against Corbyn. The fact the manifesto wasn't a checklist of Corbyn's beliefs is a good thing. And yet, the newspapers still called him an autocrat who wouldn't listen to others on policy.

Jeremy Paxman has lost any charm he once had and is just plain rude. He is always interrupting and appears not even to try to understand the answers given to him. He sticks to a premeditated script and the interview becomes more tedious as a result. He's no longer the great interviewer he once was IMO, gone pretty steeply downhill since leaving newsnight.

Justin Cashel He never said that he was for or against it. The right answer would be "I'm personally against it but I trust in the opinions of my other party members". Everything he said was contradictory, you can't renew trident AND push for disarmament. He's trying to have his cake and eat it. Either his party and the people want it or they don't.
