Richie was simply the best, where others would go on and on, two or three words were all that needed to be said, and that was Richie, simply the best

It was worth watching a 5 day test match just to hear Ritchie Benaud’s commentary. His enthusiasm for the game And the fact he managed to remain impartial while he commentated made him a very special person. His style of Commentary was outstanding and done in a way unique to him. That is why he was truly a one off person, there will never be another Ritchie Benaud. He was also very critical of the actions and behavior of some of his fellow Australians, particularly the underarm Bowling incident in an Australia vs New Zealand test match in 1981, and would have been so disappointed in this year’s cricket cheating Scandal by the actions of the Australian captain and 2 of his team mates. The cricketing world is so much the poorer for his loss and He is and always will be greatly missed.

His family was offered a state funeral but declined it on prior instruction from Richie, just like so many other awards he declined. A child of the depression, he never lost his sense of perspective on the game. As much as he loved it, it was still just a game.

Why should a cricket commentator get a state funeral.

Richie should have been knighted, a state funeral was always going to be offered to this Australian legend. Billy Birmingham does the best Richie 2 for 22.

Yes welcome back here to the MCG for today's match between England and Australia. It's a beautiful day here. Not a cloud in the sky. :)

Richie Benaud = greatest ever cricket commentator

Presumably you never heard John Arlott. Richie was great, but Arlott did most of his work on the radio, which is a more demanding medium. Brian Johnstone also worthy of a mention.

@@MOGGS1942 Richie worked with both Arlott and Johnstone and was a good friend of both. He actually married Arlott's assistant. They were all great - and different.

Hey Krish re; your comment - "A state funeral - for (just) a cricket commentator?" Richie was a very successful member of the Aust. cricket team for 12 years, the only captain of the team to never lose a series, the first player ever to top 200 wickets / 2000 runs, the 'vpice of cricket' for 35 years, instrumental in spreading the game around the world and getting players a living wage, awarded the OBE by Her Majesty and the British Empire, and a award winning journalist (including early hard-core crime reporting. That's why he was offered a state funeral. What have you done?
@colinstewart14322 жыл бұрын

And a great one but he's best remembered by most fans under 60 as the voice of cricket. A true gentleman, a real legend and for me THE voice of my childhood summers when he captivated me with his brilliantly insightful but always gentle comments that communicated a true love for and in depth knowledge of the game. I learnt so much about cricket, the players and the wider tapestry of the game from him and cricket is not and cannot be the same without him. I don't think there'll ever be another like him, certainly not in my lifetime.

Rory badly misquoted Ritchie, who said of McGrath whtn out for two "... just 98 short of his MAIDEN test century". Big difference in subtlety ... and humour.

Wow, a lot of undeserved hate for Rory's impression. He is a good impressionist, but he wasn't being asked to do impressions. His comments are the reason for the interview. And he's not best known for impersonating Richie anyway. Impressions are very hard to do, especially trying to switch between them and making social commentary, and especially when it's not the top impression you do. Good comments, Rory. I enjoy your work.
