The History of Mr Selfridges: Supporter of The Underdog | Inside Selfridges | Channel 5

Harry Gordon Selfridge launched his own retail department store in London, in 1908. He was a true backer of an underdog, which is highlighted in the way he showcased Louis Bleriot's aircraft in his store, displaying John Logie Baird's television invention and supporting Gladys Evans and the Suffragette's women's rights movement.

Harry worked at Marshall Fields in Chicago before opening his store in London, he actually opened up a store in Chicago on state and Madison but it was only opened for 1 month before he sold it to Carson pirie Scott. Marshall field was the blueprint for all department stores, Selfridges definitely got some inspiration from fields. Harry’s children were all born in Chicago as well! I’ve done all of my research on Marshall fields and I’m trying to get my hands on memorabilia since it’s now a Macys, now I’m doing research on Selfridges and I love it!

If your ever in Chicago. See the original Marshall Field department store. It's a larger Selfridges. 7 to 9 stories high. And now it has become Macy's and is better , cleaner , modern than Macy's N.Y. store

1/2 of what the "MARSHALL FIELDS" Department store. The Chicago store on State St. Is where he had worked and is 8 floors tall , twice Selfridges. See it out you tube.. It is still magnificent

.....our prime minister Tony Abbott also had three daughters ,wife and mother and had grown up with three sisters and Julia Gillard tried to tag him as a misogynist but it didn't stick .There were plenty of female journalists who knew Tony to be a very decent bloke .
