Another slight issue I have is after Moana becomes a demigoddess at the end, they don't really have her show any sort of powers besides making the glowing path with her oar. The Avengers franchise has had a bad influence on ending credits. It can be exciting building up new ideas at the very end but it can get so annoying when it feels like every movie now wants to use the end credits as bait for a new story instead of adding closure to the story already told. Good Example: KungFu Panda 2 was good because its ending connected to the story and helped the auidence find closure in the fact Po will find his heritage. Bad Example: The Super Mario Movie doesn't work because it's disconnected from the story and only exist to tease a new story.

I did watch this recently and I noticed that literally all of the songs are the same songs from the first movie just with different lyrics and some times different characters singing them. Like the bat lady's song is literally just the giant Crab's song from the first movie. Moana has a song at the beginning of the movie that is just a repeat of her song from the first movie except originally it was a song about wanting to leave the island and go exploring and now it's a song about her NOT wanting to have to say good bye to everyone she cares about. The Rock has a song in this which is again literally just the same song from the first movie except now instead of it being a selfish song about himself and how everyone should be grateful for the things he's done, it's now a song about Moana where he's trying to cheer her up and uplift her which that one I actually like because it's the only song in this whole thing that demonstrates the growth of the character from what he was in the first movie. But yeah every song in this is literally just the same music with different lyrics. I don't think there was one new original score in here that wasn't reused from the previous movie.

I loved this movie. Not that I don't understand why other people might not but it gave me everything that I thought the first movie should have more of. Such as more songs in Polynesian languages, going more into the culture and its mythology. I always was bothered by Moana not becoming a demigod in the first one, and making the storm god the bad guy shows an understanding of the culture. To a seafaring people like the Polynesian people, storms would be the most dangerous things they can encounter. Being separated is also a real danger as islands have a tendency to stop supporting humans after a while so changing homes when that happens was necessary for the survival of people living on islands back in the day. I would have preferred that they never showed the storm god's face at all (which they did in the end credits), since the mythos here is that gods don't really have faces, such as the water. Te Fiti did have a face, but she looked like Moana so I gave that a pass. Many of the gods from different mythology don't have faces, like the greek or norse gods. They were more seen as the personification of nature. I wasn't that fond of the side characters though, such as her crew. Thought they didn't get much to do and frankly, it feels like they could easily have been pulled out of the movie and nothing would have changed.

While it’s interesting there’s an actual villain now introduced in Moana (the ones from the first movie are merely side antagonists, not full fledged villains), the absence of Lin-Manuel Miranda is greatly felt. The new songwriters can’t seem to measure up to the musical magic he left behind. But to be fair, this songwriter duo did manage to make one splendid song. And that goes to “Beyond.” That to me, is the equivalent to Lin’s “How Far I’ll Go.”

I'm surprised not many people in the comment section are talking about the post-credit scene. I mean, I get it. That type of trope is usually found in Marvel and DC movies. You don't associate Disney Animation with sequel bait. Sure, if you stay until the end of Moana 1's credits, you'll see Tamatoa comment on how someone would help him get off his back if he was named Sebastian and had a Jamaican accent, but that was just a funny gag. It was no "Fine, I'll do it myself" style stinger with a villain who resembled a West Coast rapper. When Transformer One's use of post credits sequel bait is more fitting than Moana 2's, that's a problem.

Tarzan and Jane was an animated series, The Legend of Tarzan, but in the middle of the second season the series was canceled, so they decided to put together a flashback movie from the previous episodes of the series. Not the best way to end a series. But if you want better, watch the Legend of Tarzan series instead of the Tarzan and Jane movie. Because if you don't watch the series, you'll miss things like when Tarzan discovers the city of Opar, befriends the Waziri tribe, meets Teddy Roosenvelt, looking for the fountain of youth and fights with underground dinosaurs.

Honestly probably an unpopular opinion but the more I watched it the more I liked it, my biggest gripe is the pacing and weird editing, it felt like its put together with strings and glues, but its presentable enough but you can still see the cracks and holes. I think the threat is them going extinct, cause they obviously they can’t say the possibility of inbreeding to extend the bloodline, they need to find more people unrelated to them. What I do love about this movie is the possibility especially with Moana being a demigod (confirmed by the director) there’s a potential for a story like, will she outlive her family, the sing Beyond can be somewhat foreshadowing of that, but I honestly doubt disney would go that dark. Also I like Pua and I need more disney princess animal sidekick to just look cute and not annoying

I've been on the defence for Moana 2, I think partly because every thumbnail I was seeing on yt was looking very negative. So I went into the film thinking it won't be that bad, and it wasn't. Yes the dialogue and editing was a little clunky, but I expected that. But when you look past that hurdle, it's an entertaining watch. The new songs I think are very strong. The new characters I found funny and not grating. As NC said, the ending is rather good and there's solid possibilities for a third film. And that's what I'm excited for. Hopefully, Disney plan it as a film first, and animate more in house again and don't outsource it.

At least Frozen 2 was planned as a film to be one cohesive story. A story that ended up quite fragmented with only Elsa's part being worth watching in terms of interest. This was just... desperation from Disney! Moana as a disney plus series would've worked great. I always thought the first film seemed like an epic adventure. Worlds where you explore islands make great tv series. I mean, look at One Piece. That is a great example and Moana 2 as a tv series could've done it! But they dropped the ball to rake in easy cash... and as a business strategy. I cannot blame them. They are gettinflg money. But it's at the expense of sucking creativity out of all they have.

It's crazy to me, that Serenity had the same " could have been an episode" problem., despite seemingly being developed as a movie. (Yes it was obviously a sequel to a TV series)

Why couldn't it have been Bat Woman was the villain summoning the storms after escaping her prison that Moana's ancestors had locked her in a long time ago?
@jlev1028Күн бұрын
Because that would've been smart. Dusney doesn't like consistent antagonists anymore. They all have to be wishy-washy like Magnifico.

The worst thing about this movie IMO is the characters all have this “Child’s Party Entertainer” vibe: bouncy, cheerful but not meaningful nor earnest. Like, there’s no emotional weight to them, they just exist to entertain and _that’s all._ Even comic relief characters like The Genie and Olaf were entertaining but they also had moments where they wanted something but deep down felt they couldn’t and had moments where they were somber and not off-the-walls. Here, it just feels like they’re off-the-walls all the time.

Moana: "If we don't defeat the bad guy, different cultures will be separated by oceans forever!" Me: (looks at the future of European colonialism) "That might not be such a bad thing."

From my understanding this is a series of episodes stitched together, and what we are seeing come out now as Moana 3, is actually what was going to be Moana 2....

If the songs had been better I probably would have given it a higher score but as it sits, I give it a 5 out of 10, if Moana 3 builds off this movie and gives it a good payoff, that will Elevate this one as a proper setup.

I miss Lin Manuel Miranda's score. The songs weren't nearly as catchy without his involvement, and while my cousins enjoyed it fine, they probably won't be rewatching it in a hurry.
@vetarlittorf1807Күн бұрын
Hot take: I don't like his songs and because his pop-song style doesn't feel like it'll age as well as the more emotional Broadway-style music.

I loved the first one so I was fine with this one mostly cuz I love the setting and characters so much. It was pretty decent as far as Disney sequels go, and it was nice to see the characters and be in the world again. Ill watch it every once and a while like I do the other Disney sequels.

I was not liking this movie up until the last part.....the last part had enough action and emotional feels to make it an overall decent movie. Prior to that, I was thinking this was generally lazily written sequel garbage. I am also frustrated because it means that Dwayne Johnson can still be considered a bankable movie star for at least a couple of more years. It's good for the kids though, my daughter loved it.

Conspiracy Theory: Maybe Disney realized they could profit off of people's nostalgia of the direct to video sequel format, so they purposefully scrapped the Moana tv show in favor of making the 3 finished episodes into a movie. The people who grew up watching the Disney sequels, whether good or bad, would instantly recognize it and want to relive that feeling when they were younger. But hey, that's just a theory, a FILM THEORY! And... cut!

I thought the little sister was pointless even more than the pig. The motive for the main villain separating the islands to stop the people’s stories just felt not only weak but dumb because in the first movie, Moana and her people still have their stories.

IV seen people compare this to those old direct to DVD sequels which I think is a little harsh this is still way better than most of them like hunchback 2 and .......Mulan 2!!! Oh I hope mentioning that doesnt give Doug war flashbacks to 2016 when he blew out his mic

There was just so much wasted potential in this movie. That the bat god was actually nice instead of an interesting villain, that Maui lost his tattoos just to immediately get them back, that Moana dies just to immediately be revived, etc. Just playing it safe, which is one of the biggest issues with modern Disney.

I am fundamentally opposed to all live action remakes, but the upcoming Lilo&Stitch live action movie could justify its entire existence with one trick: have Auli’i Cravalho cameo in the background with Moana’s demigod tattoo implying she’s still around 2000 years later.
