NTUC to form associations for platform workers to push for better pay, rights and welfare

Private-hire drivers and delivery riders will soon be able to join associations that have the power to represent them legally and act on their behalf. Singapore's labour movement says it will form new associations to champion these workers' rights and welfare, if Parliament passes the Platform Workers Bill. Nasyrah Rohim with more.

Platform workers must not be fooled to join this union. No right-minded employer would allow their employees/contractors to join a union. If the business representatives are not lobbying against this union, then NTUC must've had some quid pro quo arrangements with them, which may be detrimental to workers' interest. Next, intermediation by NTUC is costly. This has to be borne by union members. Finally, worker earns marginal product. Having employer to contribute worker's CPF means having lesser take home pay. Platforms will definitely be charging higher fees to cover cost of their share of CPF contribution. In the end, this is a lose situation for platform workers.

Urge all platform workers to help pass this message around to your fellows. Tell your MPs and labor representatives to stop this deal and not pass the bill.

There is No Employer CPF paid to the riders. Its from their own pocket once the first year support is over and then gradual

If not mistaken,the cpf is not from Grab or the likes but the riders themselves though for first year paid using tax payer or g and then gradual. So how can this be anything great when the forced savings is deducting from already low income?

This interviewed motorcyclist is definitely a malaysia born. Many of them lost their job that their PR is tied to and have been doing this gig work and continue to stay in sg . Each order they take is removing one from singaporeans. PR is supposed to be able to find an employer to continue having a valid PR status

It is not that 60,000 are unemployed but in the recent news this 60,000 refers to people that are eligible for the SkillsFuture Jobseeker Support scheme if they are involuntarily unemployed.

I would like to hear how the platform workers feel about this bill. While the intentions are good, I am pretty sure their monthly income will dip with the contributions to the cpf. Some need the money now, more than the future. Savings are important but how can there be a balance for them. Platform operators will surely increase their cost, overall, everything will increase and it is whether the consumers will take the bite after this.
